Abstract Aim: To develop a better understanding of the perceptions of first point of contact roles within primary care by pre-registration students of the Allied Health Professions (AHPs).
Background: General practice in the UK is under growing pressure from declining general practitioner (GP) numbers and increased service demand. The National Health Service (NHS) is attempting to mitigate this demand by making more effective use of its highly experienced workforce through the creation of first contact practitioners (FCPs). Working in primary care, FCPs are highly experienced AHPs with three or more years of relevant clinical experience.
Methods: An abductive qualitative research approach underpinned by a descriptive phenomenological methodology was adopted. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the focus group transcripts.
Findings: Twenty two final-year pre-registration AHP students participated in three focus groups. Two themes with sub-themes were identified: (1) Understanding of the role-pathway to the role; role clarity; and sources of knowledge. (2) Impact on service-positives and challenges.
Conclusions: This study synthesised new findings from the previously unexplored FCP stakeholder of pre-registration AHP students. Participants generally understood the FCP's purpose of unburdening GPs and perceived the FCP model to contribute to the solution of rising clinical and financial pressures within the NHS, and primary care specifically. However, there was confusion regarding the scope of practice of an FCP. It is vital that the future workforce understand this role through effective education.

Abstract The idea of origin in terms of space and culture as a special indicator of quality is one of the most influential strands in contemporary food. It impacts on politics, economics and everyday life - and it connects these fields with complex relations of power and culture. With geographical indications, the EU offers an instrument which allows for the declaration of specialties, qualified by their tradition, as typical for a defined area. The declaration serves to protect these products as intellectual and collective property and presents them as culinary heritage, thereby enabling sale at an added value. Accordingly, the EU instrument of geographical indications evokes the interests of a variety of disciplines, such as (agricultural) economics, (social) geography, sociology, anthropology and law. Nonetheless, dialogue and cooperation among the disciplines are quite rare. "Taste | Power | Tradition" gives an insight into this multidisciplinary debate and brings together empirical data and theoretical reflections from different perspectives

Abstract This book presents inter-disciplinary perspectives on the maritime journeys of the Macassan trepangers who sailed in fleets of wooden sailing vessels known as praus from the port city of Makassar in southern Sulawesi to the northern Australian coastline. These voyages date back to at least the 1700s and there is new evidence to suggest that the Macassan praus were visiting northern Australia even earlier. This book examines the Macassan journeys to and from Australia, their encounters with Indigenous communities in the north, as well as the ongoing social and cultural impact of these connections, both in Indonesia and Australia

Abstract The field of soft matter teems with molecules and aggregates of molecules that have internal size-modulating degrees of freedom. Proteins, peptides, microgels, polymers, micelles, and even some colloids can exist in multiple-often just two dominating-states with different effective sizes, where size can refer to the volume or to the cross-sectional area for particles residing on surfaces. The size-dependence of their accessible states renders the behavior of these particles pressure-sensitive. The Bragg-Williams model is among the most simple mean-field methods to translate the presence of inter-particle interactions into an approximate phase diagram. Here, we extend the Bragg-Williams model to account for the presence of particles that are immersed in a solvent and exist in two distinct states, one occupying a smaller and the other one a larger size. The basis of the extension is a lattice-sublattice approximation that we use to host the two size-differing states. Our model includes particle-solvent interactions that act as an effective surface tension between particles and solvent and are ignorant of the state in which the particles reside. We analyze how the energetic preference of the particles for one or the other state affects the phase diagrams. The possibility of a single phase-two phases-single phase sequence of phase transitions as a function of increasing temperature is demonstrated.
