Abstract Why is it that we so readily accept the boundary lines drawn around nations or around regions like 'Asia' as though they were natural and self-evident, when in fact they are so mutable and often so very arbitrary? What happens to people not only when the borders they seek to cross become heavily guarded, but also when new borders are drawn straight through the middle of their lives? The essays in this book address these questions by starting from small places on the borderlands of East Asia and looking outwards from the small towards the large, asking what these 'minor pasts' tell us about the grand narratives of history. In the process, it takes the reader on a journey from Renaissance European visions of 'Tartary', through nineteenth-century racial theorising, imperial cartography and indigenous experiences of modernity, to contemporary debates about Big History in an age of environmental crisis

Abstract The developmental mechanisms of limb buds have been studied in developmental biology as an excellent model of pattern formation. Chick embryos have contributed to the discovery of new principles in developmental biology, as it is easy to observe live embryos and manipulate embryonic tissues. Herein, I outline recent findings and future issues over the next decade regarding three themes, based on my research: limb positioning, proximal-distal limb elongation and digit identity determination. First, how hindlimb position is determined at the molecular level is described, with a focus on the transforming growth factor-β signaling molecule GDF11. Second, I explain how the cell population in the limb bud deforms with developmental progress, shaping the limb bud with elongation along the proximal-distal axis. Finally, I describe the developmental mechanisms that determine digit identity through the interdigits.

Abstract Confirmation bias can impede accurate diagnosis. Since the approval of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), physicians are on high alert for newly developed immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Therefore, when patients present irAE-like symptoms, there is a risk of confirmation bias leading to overlooked diagnoses. This paper discusses a case of a patient with non-small cell lung cancer treated with nivolumab and topical dexamethasone ointment for an extended period due to oral mucocutaneous irAE. The patient developed adrenal insufficiency, initially considered to be a likely case of pituitary irAE. However, further investigation and the patient's clinical course revealed an unexpected diagnosis more in line with topical steroid withdrawal syndrome.

  10. Article ; Online: Precise Position Estimation Using Smartphone Raw GNSS Data Based on Two-Step Optimization.

Abstract This paper presents a high-precision positioning method using raw global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations from smartphones in the Google smartphone decimeter challenge (GSDC). Compared to commercial GNSS receivers, smartphone GNSS observations are noisy owing to antenna limitations, making it difficult to apply conventional high-precision positioning methods. In addition, it is important to exclude outliers in GSDC because GSDC includes data in environments where GNSS is shielded, such as tunnels and elevated structures. Therefore, this study proposes a smartphone positioning method based on a two-step optimization method, using factor graph optimization (FGO). Here, the velocity and position optimization process are separated and the velocity is first estimated from Doppler observations. Then, the outliers of the velocity estimated by FGO are excluded, while the missing velocity is interpolated. In the next position-optimization step, the velocity estimated in the previous step is adopted as a loose state-to-state constraint and the position is estimated using the time-differenced carrier phase (TDCP), which is more accurate than Doppler, but less available. The final horizontal positioning accuracy was 1.229 m, which was the first place, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method.
