Abstract The promotion of the English language continues to be instrumental in helping China to engage with the world, but it has caused identity anxiety and cultural uncertainty among language learners. In this paper, we analyze data from a favorite-character-presentation task and an oral survey conducted with 82 preschool children in Shanghai. We found that Chinese remains the most important language for the participants in expressing their transcultural identity aspirations, but the influences of English can be observed in their language practice when presenting their favorite characters. These findings suggest that the participants’ identity aspirations can be understood in the context of their translanguaging practices, which unfold in their use of linguistic and pictorial resources. The paper concludes with a discussion of how language educators and policymakers should consider children’s exposure to informal language learning beyond the classroom in teaching.

Abstract This Letter presents a study of laser-induced nanoparticle release from a soft substrate in air under different conditions. A continuous wave (CW) laser heats a nanoparticle and causes a rapid thermal expansion of the substrate, which gives an upward momentum that releases the nanoparticle from the substrate. The release probability of different nanoparticles from different substrates under different laser intensities is studied. The effects of surface properties of substrates and surface charges of the nanoparticles on the release are also investigated. The mechanism of nanoparticle release demonstrated in this work is different from that of laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT). Owing to the simplicity of this technology and the wide availability of commercial nanoparticles, this nanoparticle release technology may find applications in nanoparticle characterization and nanomanufacturing.

Abstract This scoping literature review aims to explore how language teachers incorporate technology into their teaching and learning experiences. It does this by reviewing studies related to language teachers’ technology use and applications of technology in technology-enhanced language education that were published between 2012 and 2022. By using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines to analyze 51 empirical studies, this review categorizes and identifies 4 clusters of topics that these studies focused on: teachers’ perceptions, technological application practice and experience, technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK), and teachers’ designing/developing scale for the promotion of language learning in pedagogical design in technology-enhanced language education research. The review concludes that researchers have mainly investigated language teachers’ perceptions and experience of technology-enhanced language education, not their pedagogical design processes. The results suggest that more studies are needed to explore the role of language teachers as pedagogical designers in technology-enhanced language education in order to integrate technology into language education and facilitate sustainable language teaching and learning.

Abstract Aims: This study aimed to construct a miRNA-mRNA network to elucidate the molecular mechanism of exosome function in metastatic HCC. Methods: We explored the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and then analyzed the RNAs of 50 samples to obtain differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) and mRNAs (DEGs) involved in the progression of metastatic HCC. Next, a miRNA-mRNA network related to exosomes in metastatic HCC was constructed on the basis of the identified DEMs and DEGs. Finally, the function of the miRNA-mRNA network was explored by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis. Immunohistochemistry was performed to validate expression of NUCKS1 in HCC specimens. Based on the immunohistochemistry, the score of the NUCKS1 expression was calculated, and the patients were divided into high- and low-expression patients, and the differences in survival between the two groups were compared. Results: Through our analysis, 149 DEMs and 60 DEGs were identified. In addition, a miRNA-mRNA network, including 23 miRNAs and 14 mRNAs, was constructed. Low expression of NUCKS1 was validated in the majority of HCCs compared with their matched adjacent cirrhosis specimens (P < 0.001), which was consistent with our result of differential expression analyses. HCC patients with low expression of NUCKS1 had shorter overall survival than those with high NUCKS1 expression (P = 0.0441). Conclusions: The novel miRNA-mRNA network will provide new insights into the underlying molecular mechanisms of exosomes in metastatic HCC. NUCKS1 might serve a potential therapeutic target to restrain the development of HCC.

Abstract As the role of English as a global language grows, many governments in the Asian region have been promoting the use of English as medium of instruction (EMI) in universities and schools. In recent years, the use of EMI has been promoted in the form of Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in many pre-primary, primary and secondary school systems in Asia. Because this focus on the school sector is relatively new, there seems to be relatively limited empirical research on the implementation of EMI and CLIL in primary and secondary schools in Asia. Using scoping review methodology, this paper aims to 'map the terrain' by providing an overview of the contexts and focus areas of empirical research conducted in the last seven years (2015-2022). The findings highlight gaps in the existing body of literature, including a lack of research in primary school and early childhood contexts, limited research in some countries in the Asian region, and a relatively narrow range of research focus areas, stakeholder perspectives and methodological approaches. These findings highlight areas that future researchers may consider as they investigate EMI and CLIL in school contexts in Asia.

Abstract Objective: To understand the distribution of the content range of essential ingredients in commercial follow-up formula for older infants in China, analyze the differences between the content of essential ingredients in commercial older infant formula milk powder in China and the requirements of the new national standard(GB 10766-2021).
Methods: The label information of 478 commercial follow-up formula for older infant registered and approved from January 2017 to June 2022 were collected and entered. The distribution of essential ingredients was statistically analyzed, which was compared with the requirements of the new national food safety standard.
Results: The new national standard has 31 essential components. Compared with the old national standard(GB 10767-2010), five indicators of carbohydrate, α-linolenic acid, choline, selenium and manganese were added. The new national standard has 28 essential component requirements revised, including 13 adjusted the lower limit, 7 adjusted the upper limit, and 16 essential components added the upper limit. Among the approved 478 older infant formula milk powders, the distribution of 11 essential ingredients were all in line with the new national standard, and 14 essential ingredients were less than the lower limit of the new national standard. The essential ingredients whose minimum value was less than the lower limit of the new national standard and the proportion exceeds 50% were vitamin D, iodine and choline. with the proportions(number of cases) of 98.33%(470 cases), 74.06%(354 cases) and 72.37%(275 cases), respectively. The maximum value of essential ingredients exceeded the maximum requirements stipulated in the new national standard, and the protein in 13.18%(63 cases) of the older infant formula milk powder was higher than the maximum requirements of the new national standard.
Conclusion: The content of essential components in most commercial products in China meets the new national standard requirements. Some essential ingredients need to be adjusted.
