Abstract The binary distinction De Neys questions has been put forward many times since the beginnings of psychology, in slightly different forms and under different names. It has proved enormously useful and has received detailed empirical support and careful modeling. At heart the distinction is that between knowledge in long-term memory and control processes in short-term memory.

Abstract Mammals maintain their internal body temperature within a physiologically optimal range. This involves the regulation of core body temperature in response to changing environmental temperatures and a natural circadian oscillation of internal temperatures. The preoptic area (POA) of the hypothalamus coordinates body temperature by responding to both external temperature cues and internal brain temperature. Here we describe an autonomous circadian clock system in the murine ventromedial POA (VMPO) in close proximity to cells which express the atypical violet-light sensitive opsin, Opn5. We analyzed the light-sensitivity and thermal-sensitivity of the VMPO circadian clocks

Abstract There is limited information on changes of pasture mineral concentrations over the long-term in response to liming. A long-term field experiment was conducted to assess the influence of lime application on (a) changes in pasture mineral composition over time; and (b) key pasture mineral concentrations and ratios important to animal health. Perennial and annual pastures with or without lime application were sampled annually over 12 years and analysed for macro- and micro-minerals. Mineral ratios and indices were calculated to assess the potential impact on animal health. Liming increased the concentrations of calcium, sodium and silicon, but decreased the concentrations of micro-nutrients including copper, zinc and manganese. The same trend was found in both annual and perennial pastures although there were some fluctuations between years. Liming increased the calcium:phosphorus ratio and the dietary cation-anion difference but reduced the tetany index on both annual and perennial pastures. These findings suggest a potential benefit to improve animal health outcomes for some disorders on the limed pastures. However, the reduced concentrations of some trace elements following liming potentially decreases antioxidant capacity and requires further research.

Abstract Objective: To ascertain the completeness of reporting of uveal melanoma cases in North Carolina to the state's cancer registry.
Methods: This was a retrospective chart review performed at a single institution analyzing the completeness of information reported to the North Carolina Cancer Registry between 2010 and 2015. A list of all patients with uveal melanoma diagnosed, treated and/or followed at UNC-Chapel Hill between 2010-2015 was compared to the list of patients with uveal melanoma reported to the North Carolina Central Cancer registry during the same time frame.
Results: Based on ICD 9 and 10 codes, there were 66 patients with ciliary body or choroidal melanomas diagnosed, followed and/or treated at UNC between 2010 and 2015. Of those, 41 (62%) were on the list of cases reported through the UNC Cancer Registry to the NCCCR. A chart review of the excluded cases was performed and the following barriers to reporting of uveal melanoma were identified: lack of diagnostic imaging results, lack of histopathologic confirmation, inconsistent language used to communicate diagnosis, and lack of implementation of the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries' National Interstate Data Exchange Agreement.
Conclusion: The diagnosis and treatment of uveal melanoma is unique when compared to other types of cancers. Diagnosis is based on clinical features and characteristic findings on ophthalmic imaging and ultrasound. There is often no pathology report or radiologic imaging which makes it difficult for hospital registrars to recognize and confirm cases of uveal melanoma. This creates significant barriers to reporting cases to state and national cancer registries. The incomplete data makes it difficult to detect changes in the incidence of uveal melanoma in North Carolina. The development of a national uveal melanoma registry should be seriously considered.

Abstract Objectives: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of a rapid host-protein test for differentiating bacterial from viral infections in patients who presented to the emergency department (ED) or urgent care center (UCC).
Methods: This was a prospective multicenter, blinded study. MeMed BV (MMBV), a test based on tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), interferon gamma-inducible protein-10 (IP-10), and C-reactive protein (CRP), was measured using a rapid measurement platform. Patients were enrolled from 9 EDs and 3 UCCs in the United States and Israel. Patients >3 months of age presenting with fever and clinical suspicion of acute infection were considered eligible. MMBV results were not provided to the treating clinician. MMBV results (bacterial/viral/equivocal) were compared against a reference standard method for classification of infection etiology determined by expert panel adjudication. Experts were blinded to MMBV results. They were provided with comprehensive patient data, including laboratory, microbiological, radiological and follow-up.
Results: Of 563 adults and children enrolled, 476 comprised the study population (314 adults, 162 children). The predominant clinical syndrome was respiratory tract infection (60.5% upper, 11.3% lower). MMBV demonstrated sensitivity of 90.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 80.3-99.7), specificity of 92.8% (90.0%-95.5%), and negative predictive value of 98.8% (96.8%-99.6%) for bacterial infections. Only 7.2% of cases yielded equivocal MMBV scores. Area under the curve for MMBV was 0.95 (0.90-0.99).
Conclusions: MMBV had a high sensitivity and specificity relative to reference standard for differentiating bacterial from viral infections. Future implementation of MMBV for patients with suspected acute infections could potentially aid with appropriate antibiotic decision-making.
