The Case of China’s Forestry Carbon Sink Mechanism

Abstract Compared to more developed countries, the use of land resources is less efficient in China. China’s vast forest land area gives it a rich and underutilized carbon sink. This is an important way for China to achieve the goals of “carbon peaking” and “carbon neutrality”, which is of great significance to China’s sustainable development. In the past 20 years, China has designed a series of policies to serve the development of forestry carbon sinks, namely the forestry carbon sink mechanism (FCSM). However, the questions of which policy is the most important, and what is the socio-economic value it generates, have not been fully investigated. Accordingly, this paper studied 30 provincial-level regions in China from 2005 to 2020 using the difference-in-differences (DID) model. The conclusions show that: (1) the FCSM does increase the socio-economic value of land resources, thus improving the sustainability of land resources; (2) the FCSM helps to increase forest coverage, forest stock volume and the forest coverage rate, which increases the social value of land resources from the greening path; (3) the FCSM helps to increase the gross forestry product, which increases the economic value of land resources through the path of increasing production value.

Abstract ObjectiveSelf-management is crucial in managing recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). This study explored the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of patients with RPL toward RPL.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted among patients with RPL between January 2023 and June 2023 at the Second Hospital of Lanzhou University. Participants’ demographic characteristics and KAP were determined using a self-designed questionnaire (Cronbach’s α = 0.818). Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to observe the correlations among KAP and different factors.ResultsThis study analyzed 497 valid questionnaires. The mean knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were 11.59 ± 4.30 (possible range: 0–20, 57.95%), 44.17 ± 3.18 (possible range: 13–65, 67.95%), and 32.39 ± 5.22 (possible range: 8–40, 80.98%), indicating poor knowledge, moderate attitude, and proactive practice. Age was non-linearly associated with the KAP dimensions, with a positive impact of age on KAP among those aged <32 years old. Knowledge was directly influenced by education (β = 1.49, p < 0.001) and income (β = 1.08, p < 0.001). The attitude was directly influenced by knowledge (β = 0.25, p < 0.001) and indirectly influenced by education (β = 0.37, p = 0.001) and income (β = 0.27, p < 0.001). Practice was directly influenced by knowledge (β = 0.26, p < 0.001), attitude (β = 0.28, p < 0.001), and income (β = 0.68, p = 0.012), and indirectly influenced by knowledge (β = 0.07, p = 0.001), education (β = 0.59, p = 0.001), and income (β = 0.42, p < 0.001).ConclusionWomen with RPL in Lanzhou show poor knowledge, moderate attitude, and proactive practice toward RPL. This study identified specific KAP items that would require improvements. The study also identified categories of patients who would need more attention.

Abstract The manufacturing process is the last opportunity to build an ideal design reliability index into a product. With the advancement of intelligent manufacturing technology, the concept of quality evolves from conformance to fitness for use, which emphasizes that reliability should be built into product with quality control. To effectively implement reliability assurance in the manufacturing process, it is necessary to accurately identify the vital few characteristics that are critical to reliability. Thus, a heuristic key reliability characteristic (KRC) analysis in manufacturing model fusing big quality data is proposed. First, on the basis of the fusion big quality data in manufacturing-by-manufacturing system Reliability-operational process Quality- output product Reliability (RQR) chain, a data driven KRC analysis model is proposed, and a reliability proactive control framework in manufacturing driven by KRC is expounded. Second, considering mass quality and reliability data, an effective KRC identification method based on data mining using multi-objectives genetic algorithm (MOGA) is established. Third, considering manufacturing data and product failure risk, an extended risk priority number (RPN) for KRC ranking is proposed. Finally, an example of an insulating base of subway locomotive is provided to verify the proposed approach.

Abstract Minimally invasive techniques have been widely applied in general thoracic surgery. Compared with video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), due to its theoretic superiority, robotic surgery is challenging the traditional position of VATS. With its unique advantages, including 3D vision and a high-freedom endowrist, it leads to easier lymph node dissection, more convenient blood vessel dissection, a shorter learning curve and competence for the completion of complex surgery. However, as a new surgical technology, the safety and efficacy of robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS) still need to be further verified. Thus, in this article, we review and summarize the application of RATS versus VATS in general thoracic surgery.

Abstract The Sloping Land Conversion Program (SLCP) is a significant measure to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations in 2015. SLCP plays an important role in poverty alleviation and income increase for farmers in poor areas. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether the income of farmers has increased after participating in SLCP, and whether SLCP has released the agricultural labor force to obtain non-agricultural income by participating in non-agricultural work. Based on the field investigation in Luocheng County and Longsheng County of Guangxi, Libo County, and Dushan county of Guizhou, this paper uses the method of propensity score matching (PSM) to explore the impact of SLCP on the income of farmers in rocky desertification areas. According to our research, it is found that: (1) SLCP has a positive effect of 5.2% on the average annual net income of farmers, a positive effect of 43.2% on agricultural income, and a negative effect of 9.8% on non-agricultural income, but all of the effects are insignificant. Selective deviation will overestimate the impact of SLCP on farmers’ total income and agricultural income and underestimate the impact on non-agricultural income. SLCP failed to promote the transformation of farmers into secondary and tertiary industries. The mechanism of SLCP to increase farmers’ income is complex. (2) Farmers’ participation in SLCP is influenced by work experience and education level in human capital, participation in skills training in social capital, and owning durable consumer goods in physical capital. Although SLCP will promote economic development under the condition of improving the ecological environment in the future, it is not advisable to exchange farmers’ livelihood for ecological construction at present. The implementation of SLCP should consider not only the overall ecological benefits, but also the short-term social and economic benefits.
