5th Week of Easter. ; Daily Reflections (Meditations) on the Scriptures from the Roman Catholic Lectionary.

Abstract: ... the impacts of COVID-19. I hear voices wrought with fear as my patients battle illness or care ... of peace as we renew trust in the words of Jesus and his mother during this turbulent time.|Is ... it a coincidence that Jesus teaches this lesson on Mother's Day during a global pandemic? I think not. ...

Abstract |As I reflect on the readings of today I find myself very moved by a couple of things. |For some, today is Mother's Day. In the Catholic faith tradition, we honor the mother of Jesus Christ, Mary. I see her as a fierce protector of her son, Jesus. As a Catholic I believe that Mary is my spiritual mother, and protector. I frequently find myself praying to her for guidance as I travel my own journey as a mother. The excursion known as motherhood can be exciting, scary, bumpy, joyful and full of awe, sometimes all in the same day! I'm blessed to have a mother who modeled the importance of faith through her life. I'm grateful everyday to be celebrating another Mother's Day with her.|The second item that touched me was the following:|Jesus said to his disciples:|"Do not let your hearts be troubled."|I fondly remember hearing the pastor at Holy Cross in Omaha preaching on this verse. He seemed to start by reciting this verse with a booming voice and through his homily transitioned to a very kind, gentle caring tone in which he really encouraged the congregation to truly leave their troubles and trust in God.|As a nurse, I find the navigation of this global pandemic to be full of challenges. I've had the opportunity to accompany many as they manage the impacts of COVID-19. I hear voices wrought with fear as my patients battle illness or care for family members who are sick. I hear criticism of many decision makers and I hear critics who maintain that this is all a hoax. People are unkind to each other over decisions that are made without remembering that this is a novel situation. Nobody has encountered a global pandemic in over 100 years!|If I think about this very long, I can go down some really dark holes.|I've had to be very intentional about remaining positive, graceful, and hopeful. The one thing that I've leaned on the most is my faith. I'm continually practicing gratitude and at night I tell myself to "Give it to God and go to sleep." I pray the rosary frequently because it really helps me manage the anxiety that can come with the unknown. I find comfort in knowing that Mary asks that we pray the rosary for peace. I need some peace as I witness the current chaos around me.|So, I urge us all to take some time and remember Jesus' words: "Do not let your hearts be troubled." Really think about these words. Trust in God's love for me. Try to "give it to God and go to sleep."|Like me, it seems that Jesus learned a lesson or two from his mother. He affords protection and calm to his followers. His mother, Mary, offers protection and peace. My hope is that we can all experience times of peace as we renew trust in the words of Jesus and his mother during this turbulent time.|Is it a coincidence that Jesus teaches this lesson on Mother's Day during a global pandemic? I think not.

Title translation Kulturübergreifende Validität der Death Reflection Scale während der COVID-19-Pandemie
Abstract Background: The global COVID-19 pandemic confronts people with their fragility, vulnerability, and mortality. To date, scales to measure death awareness mainly focus on the anxiety-provoking aspect of mortality cues. This study aims to cross-culturally adapt and validate the Death Reflection Scale (DRS), a scale for measuring positive, growth-oriented cognitions of life reflection and prosocial behavior following confrontation with the finiteness of life. Materials and Methods: The Death Reflection Scale was translated and adapted in a multi-step process to the German language. In this anonymous, cross-sectional, online survey at a large university in Germany, students, healthcare professionals (HCP) and other staff completed the DRS alongside comparison measures. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess configural, metric, and scalar measurement equivalence across four age and occupational groups. Convergent/divergent validity testing was done via Spearman correlations. Results: 1,703 participants provided data for a response rate of similar to 5%. 24% of respondents were HCP, 22% students. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a higher-order structure of the DRS with a strong general factor and the originally proposed five subscales (CFI 0.945, SRMR 0.045, RMSEA 0.055). Multi-group CFA showed partial metric equivalence across age groups and partial scalar invariance across occupational groups. Non-invariant scales were the Motivation to live, Putting life into perspective, and Legacy subscales. In the convergent validity testing, two hypotheses were fully confirmed, two partially and four were not confirmed. Experiencing a propensity for increased contemplation and life reflection during the pandemic together with spirituality showed correlations of moderate to large size to the DRS and its subscales (Spearman's rho ranging from 0.31 to 0.52). Conclusion: Further conceptual work for death awareness to explore the construct's stability in different population groups needs to be undertaken. However, the DRS can be mostly used to assess positive and growth-oriented aspects of death awareness and death reflection which may be an important avenue when developing counseling and support interventions for groups experiencing a high burden during the pandemic.

Abstract |Today is the Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels. I'm going to be honest with you. When I was a child, I believed in angels and had a deep friendship with my Imagined guardian angel. Growing into adolescence and young adulthood however, my angel became a distant childhood memory. |I didn't think about angels or consider them as a spiritual resource until several years ago when I attended the funeral of a very close friend. I was filled with grief and deep sadness throughout her funeral liturgy and yet when the Song of Farewell began, before they would take her body from the church, I was overcome by the words: May the Angels lead you into paradise. The beautiful song invited angels to accompany my friend into paradise and into the presence of God. I pictured her surrounded lovingly by angels and although I was grappling with my feelings of loss and loneliness, I was at the same time, deeply comforted. I had a genuine, spiritual, and mystical sense that she was not alone. |The pandemic has brought on an alarming increase in loneliness throughout the world. Yes, people are finding new ways to connect in this era of social distancing, but loneliness continues to increase. Loneliness impacts the physical, spiritual, and emotional health of a human person. Jamie Ducharme writes: Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, public-health experts were concerned about an epidemic of loneliness in the U.S. The coronavirus has exacerbated that problem… 1. Could our feelings of loneliness be where our guardian angels can assist us and advocate for us? |The faithful from most of the world's major religions believe in angels as messengers from God. Catholicism goes one step further saying that we are each assigned an angel to be our guardian. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains to us: From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading…to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels…united in God. 2.|In today's gospel, Jesus explains that angels always look upon the face of God. Since our guardian angels have that deep connection to God and because the word "angel" means "messenger" in Greek, we are invited as people of faith to turn to our angelic messengers who not only care for us but who also deliver our messages/prayers to our God. Their reassuring presence can offer great comfort and solace, similar to what I experienced during my friend's funeral.|In conclusion, as we reflect on today's readings, I invite you to turn with me to today's responsorial psalm which offers a moving image of God knitting us together in our mother's womb. Let's imagine, as God knit each of us together, our guardian angel was also there to guard and love us from the onset of our creation. While we journey through the pandemic and on this very special Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels, our faith tradition reminds us that we are never alone.

Abstract Mankind has struggled with many diseases throughout history and this struggle still continues today It can be seen that epidemics generally have more negative effects on social life in social, political, cultural and educational areas, especially the economy State administrators have also taken various measures to prevent such epidemic diseases according to the conditions of the period Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), which first appeared in Wuhan city of People's Republic of China in December 2019 and began to threaten the whole world from here, is spreading very quickly As a result of this situation, World Health Organization (WHO) declared this disease as pandemic (global epidemic) on March 11, 2020 Nations are collaborating against this disease which is seen in almost all countries of the world and they are taking some precautions It is stated by the authorities that the measures taken alone by countries cannot be enough to prevent such global epidemics and that nations should act as a global whole In addition, it is clear that societies' activating their internal dynamics social, political, religious, cultural, etc - can be effective at the point of preventing/taking under control this global epidemic Variables that may occur regionally, locally or globally have a significant role in the spread or prevention of diseases Minstrels, who have undertaken the duty to express the pain, problems, happiness, love, fears and enthusiasm of the people in every period and who have thus become their spokesperson in a sense, were not indifferent to this novel virus and they expressed the existing situation and the conditions brought about by this condition in their poems This study discusses how minstrels addressed and expressed their views about how the society perceived the situation with the emergence of the virus in the poems in their social media accounts and various platforms In this way, the study aims to understand in which direction minstrels manipulate the society and what kind of social responsibility they undertake on the issue It can be stated that during the global epidemic, minstrels created poems on many issues such as curfew, coronavirus opportunists, opposing spiritual values, the effects of the virus on economic and social life, holy places being empty, social media posts, abiding by the rules of cleaning, taking a break from education, praising healthcare workers, call to stay at home, reproach to the source of the virus, persecution to East Turkistan, and reaction to world leaders and thus interpreted the feelings of the people In addition, it was found that all the stakeholders fulfilled their duty in the continuation of tradition in the face of this global epidemic Bringing many elements of the tradition minstrel act, minstrel call-and-response, telling stories and fairy tales, etc - to the viewers/listeners especially by making use of social media can be evaluated as the most important indicator that the tradition is continued in the liveliest way Despite the views of minstrels on making use of folk medicine in the face of epidemic diseases in previous centuries, it is quite remarkable that today's minstrels stand in favour of modern medicine and this should be considered as a change of mentality

Abstract The article is an attempt to provide a kaleidoscopic interpretation of how social science scholarship views the socio-cultural terrain of Zimbabwe during and after the global health crisis, and the societal and business haemorrhage induced by the coronavirus (COVID-19). Built through a multi-perspective and triangulation involving a modified Delphic approach that engages archival methods involving document and literature review, content analysis and expert interpretation; the article unveils the various effects of COVID-19 on Zimbabwe. It is concluded that COVID-19 by its nature is disruptive to everyday life, restrictive to human-social relations and is an instigator to tradition, spirituality and intellectuality in the country. The challenge of the virus brings to society a deliberate consciousness that global processes and events are converging (borders are porous) while local embeddedness is being entrenched through practices like lockdowns and confinement.

Abstract The Covid-19 pandemic has led to radical interventions in healthcare and social life, the efficiency and appropriateness of which are now increasingly at the centre of controversy. In this volume, renowned scientists, academics and experts from a wide range of disciplines reflect and comment on how to deal with the pandemic. Among other things, the following topics are discussed: the statements of national ethics committees, the issue of triage, the acceptability of interventions in fundamental freedoms, the social isolation of those affected, the handling of religious and spiritual needs as well as deeper social changes during the crisis. Overall, this publication makes an important contribution to the resolution of the coronavirus crisis.
