Abstract Zagaria, Andó and Zennaro (2020) provide a useful analysis of the current state of affairs in the discipline of psychology. They conclude that psychology is in a messy and unproductive pre-pragmatic state and suggest that evolutionary psychology can provide a needed metatheoretical perspective to enable psychology to move forward as a science. In my commentary I move to another direction and suggest that psychology does not need more solid foundations, but rather foundations characterized by reflective stance towards its phenomena, theories, methods and data production processes. I suggest that this kind of stance would be in accordance with the process ontological perspective that allows focusing on meaningful human experience as central object of study for psychology, together with an idiographic approach to research. I thus suggest that psychology will endure only by turning its reflective gaze towards oneself, by thinking about its past, imagining its future and constructing novelty from the creative assemblage of the two.

Abstract Zagaria, Andò and Zennaro have provided a useful analysis of the theoretical precariousness of psychology by looking at a number of its core concepts. They propose that evolutionary psychology could be a unifying approach for the otherwise fragmented discipline. In this response, I argue that although evolutionary psychology provides many interesting perspectives on the mental life of human beings, it is much too soon to jump to a unifying conclusion for psychology on its basis. Before beginning the work of explaining the functioning of the mind in evolutionary terms, we need illuminating descriptions of mental life as such. Phenomenological description should precede evolutionary explanation, and the former will reveal that mental life is intentional and normative - something that evolutionary and other explanatory perspectives have difficulties accommodating. When the subject matter is human mental life, it might be better to live with conceptual confusion than obtaining consensus on a misguided foundation. I agree with the authors that psychology stands on feet of clay, but instead of lamenting the "unsteady building" of the discipline, I suggest we embrace a more nomadic life for psychology - moving about on our feet - given the fact that humans perpetually and historically seem to reflect on their own lives, which is a process that should be kept open rather than terminated.

Abstract In this paper, we invite psychologists to reflect on and recognize how knowledge is produced in the field of social psychology. Engaging with the work of decolonial, liberation and critical psychology scholars, we provide a six-point lens on precarity that facilitates a deeper understanding of knowledge production in hegemonic social psychology and academia at large. We conceptualize knowledge (re)production in psychology as five interdependent 'cogs' within the neoliberal machinery of academia, which cannot be viewed in isolation; (1) its epistemological foundations rooted in coloniality, (2) the methods and standards it uses to understand human thoughts, feelings and behaviours, (3) the documentation of its knowledge, (4) the dissemination of its knowledge and (5) the universalization of psychological theories. With this paper we also claim our space in academia as early career researchers of colour who inhabit the margins of hegemonic social psychology. We join scholars around the world in calling for a much-needed disciplinary shift that centres solutions to the many forms of violence that are inflicted upon marginalized members of the global majority. To conclude, we offer four political-personal intentions for the reorientation for the discipline of hegemonic social psychology with the aim to disrupt the politics of knowledge production and eradicate precarity.

Abstract The essay attempts to contextualize the German-Scandinavian tradition of Critical Psychology (GSCP) that bases on Cultural-Historical Activity Theory in today's critical psychologies. It is argued that adding to a psychology and ideology critique the positive dimension of ”foundational” theory is important to counteract the currently prevailing “negative” ideology of liberalism. It is also claimed that an ”instrumental” version of critical psychology, which takes up elements from psychology for tactical purposes will remain dependent on the given discipline of psychology and unable to reflect on its own subject position. GSCP is then rendered as developing the Marxist ontology of social practice (rather than its utopianism) toward a concept of a subjectivity constituted in social practice but with the criteria of action potency and productive needs on the part of the individual. It is suggested that this approach solves important problems in contemporary critical psychology. Finally, it is described how GSCP, too, might grow from the encounter, by developing a theory of collective subjectivity to include – us.

Abstract In recent history, planned violent attacks have persisted in the United States and abroad. Ranging from targeted attacks on private individuals, public figures, schools, universities, corporations, and public venues, among others, these attacks have continued to illustrate the need for improved threat assessment and management efforts at local and national levels. This text reflects the rise of scholarship and growth within the field of threat assessment and management. It spans across disciplines and explores the foundations of threat assessment, the fields of practice in which it is utilized, and provides detail on practical applications from the most notable threat assessors and programs in North America, Europe, and Australia.

Abstract There is an urgent need today to deepen and enrich the pastoral dimension of Sunday worship. This book attempts to meet that need. The practical guidance that is offered has its foundation in rigorous and comprehensive theological reflection. This reflection draws not only on the riches of the Christian heritage, but also on some wonderfully illuminating psychological research. The conversation between the two disciplines yields some very interesting and important new ideas on worship as pastoral care.  Each chapter consists of a theoretical base and a number of practical suggestions and

  8. Article: Exploring the Dialectical Space: A Brief History of The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child.

    Abrams, Samuel

The Psychoanalytic study of the child

    2015  Volume 68, Page(s) 3–9

Abstract Abrams, currently the longest serving editor of The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, offers his views of emerging models and themes in the understanding of children, which has characterized The PSOC since its inception in 1945. In his view, the first of its published papers, Hartmann and Kris's "The Genetic Approach in Psychoanalysis," set the stage for examining innovative ways to view the growth of the mind in general and the psychological development of children in particular. In his judgment, many of its published papers have highlighted expectable dispositional discontinuities as well as recognizable continuities interacting with a varying and sometimes unexpected set of environment circumstances. That interaction occurs within a dialectical space that contributes its own unique influences. This investigative trend, scattered throughout its nearly seventy-year history, may reflect the recognition for the need for a different foundational theory for our discipline or perhaps a new paradigm altogether.
