Abstract It is 39 years since Archiv für Molluskenkunde last appeared without listing Ronald Janssen as an editor and 16 years since Eike Neubert became involved as copy editor. The changes to the journal in that time have been immense, including the A4 format, the take-over of English, and colour printing to a standard that we have heard is the envy of our rivals. An impact factor above 1 is also a remarkable achievement for a journal dominated by taxonomic studies. Well done, and very many thanks to you both! Over this period, our publisher, the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung, has also evolved considerably and is now not just one museum but several. Thus, as Ronald Janssen approached retirement, three malacologists from the Senckenberg museums in Dresden and Görlitz were already in place to be trained up and now to take over. We share this job equally, so none of us is chief editor. We hope to be joined by whoever is appointed as the new curator in Frankfurt. The change of regime prompted us to codify the formatting rules of the journal with a more detailed set of Instructions for Authors, which in turn led us to consider and implement changes to the style. In part we have tried to match more closely the style of other Senckenberg journals, although we have retained the double-line header above the titles to echo a feature present since 1948. The new style is also somewhat more compact, allowing us to print more papers per issue. That may become important because this is the biggest single issue ever, with 9 articles and 183 pages of text. The size is perhaps partly a reflection of the impact factor of the journal attracting more high-quality submissions, but also having 3 editors may have facilitated a faster processing of manuscripts. We cannot imagine how Ronald managed alone because we are exhausted! We would like also to take the opportunity to introduce and thank our new copy editor and technical editor, Robert Forsyth. He brings to these roles not only his knowledge of English as a native speaker and his professional training and experience in publishing but also a malacological knowledge that is at least the match of any of ours. We have so often relied on his advice, judgement and initiative that he fully deserves equal billing with the rest of the editorial team. We hope that you find much of interest in this issue. If you do, it is mostly down to the authors of course, not us, but the best sign of your appreciation would be please to keep up the flow of submissions!

Abstract: ... laparoscopy were modest. While medical institutions were not happy to support a wider use of RAS, a question ...

Abstract Robotic assisted surgery (RAS) was perceived as the rising star of the minimally invasive surgery (MIS) since its early stages but, its penetration into the general use of surgery was very slow at the beginning. Over the first two decades of its existence, RAS struggled to be accepted as a valid alternative for standard MIS. Despite the promoted benefits offered by the computerassisted telemanipulation, the main limitations were related to the financial burden of the technology, while the real advantages over "classic" laparoscopy were modest. While medical institutions were not happy to support a wider use of RAS, a question related to the surgical expertise and indirectly to the better patients outcomes was raised. Is RAS improving the skills of an average surgeon to be as good as the MIS experts and reaching a higher level for her/his surgical outcomes? As the answer is very complex, and it is related to so many factors, the debate was always marked by many controverses and no conclusions. Often, during those times, an enthusiastic surgeon attracted by robotic technology, happened to be invited to get trained more for laparoscopic skills, rather than encouraged to spending resources for inconsistent benefits for the patients. Moreover, one could often hear during the surgical conferences arrogant quotes such as â??a fool with a tool is still a foolâ? (Grady Booch).

Abstract: ... neuroendocrine tumors profit from special medical and surgical treatment. Screening is not conducted frequently ...

Abstract Pancreatic cancer is the fourth biggest cause of cancer-related fatalities in the World and generally affects people in their sixth to eighth decades. Cigarette smoking, obesity, high alcohol intake and chronic pancreatitis are underlying risk factors. The majority of pancreatic carcinomas are ductal adenocarcinomas, frequently developed on the head of the pancreas. Due to the delayed emergence of clinical symptoms, the pathology is often detected in a late stage (e.g. epigastric pain, painless jaundice and weight loss). When the primary tumor is diagnosed, it has often already advanced to other organs, primarily the liver. Surgical excision is only achievable in around 20 percent of patients, therefore palliative care is generally the sole option. The most prevalent surgical procedure performed is pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure). Survival rates at five years vary from 3 to 40% depending on the size, spread and resectability of the tumor. Imaging may sometimes detect tiny, possibly resectable pancreatic lesions. These lesions may be benign, premalignant or malignant. Pancreatic cystic lesions and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors profit from special medical and surgical treatment. Screening is not conducted frequently, although it is advised for selected, high-risk patients.

Abstract In this year, the Chimica Techno Acta journal (CTA) celebrates its 10th anniversary. A tenth of a century is a long time, during which about 350 papers have been published. In the beginning, the journal has been edited in two formats (electronic and print) and in two languages (Russian and English), but then considerable efforts have been made to ensure the rapid consideration of manuscripts while maintaining high peer-review standards at the same time. CTA has become an exclusively English-language and online journal. As a result, authors currently receive a first decision on their manuscripts within 17 days of submission, while the total time from submission to publication of a final version does not exceed 50 days. Along with providing good conditions for our authors, the journal seeks all possible ways to improve the quality of its content by considering well-designed manuscripts for their publication. Therefore, the rejection rate is increased from 10–20% in 2014–2015 to almost 50% in 2022. Another point consists in the support of the published items by visual facilities that have online journals. To avoid boredom, we changed the layout from grayscale to color and then to different colors for each year. The current (10th) volume is published in an orange-based design, symbolizing sunrise, warm sand, and juicy peach. We believe that visual content has a strong focus on the readers' attention. Even though the color perception may not impress someone, we will definitely change the coloristics in next year. The CTA Editorial Board is constantly updated with new scientists to ensure a more accurate review of incoming manuscripts. Within the current editorial, we are pleased to welcome a new editor, Dr. Pavel Padnya from Kazan Federal University (Russia). A short interview with him can be found below.

    2023  Volume 256

Abstract: ... However, the step toward Open Data and Open Research has not been fully embraced yet. ...

Abstract The third and last issue of the year offers a diversity of communication topics. The General Section includes a study of parasocial relations with media characters and an analysis of COVID-19 rhetoric in Iran. The Thematic Section presents a rich discussion of issues and processes involved in the persistence of “old media.” Diverse topics are also presented in the Community Section including a summary of the SACM award winning dissertation and an introduction to DOCA. Finally, the contributions to the Book Review Section discuss books on Internet memes and the influencer industry. Before our more detailed overview, we are pleased to present an important next step for SComS. SComS is evolving toward Open Data and Open Research. Since 2017, SComS has been published as a platinum open access journal. One notable feature is the journals’ multilingual nature. For authors, the online first publication of articles is particularly advantageous, enabling the timely publication of accepted contributions. With these features, SComS has positioned itself as a dynamic and innovative journal in the European journal landscape. However, the step toward Open Data and Open Research has not been fully embraced yet.

Abstract This issue marks the beginning of a new phase in the journal’s existence. During preparation of the current issue, we received a call inviting us to submit the information of the journal for consideration to be included in the SCOPUS database. The happy news of the journal’s inclusion in this prestigious database followed soon after. For this success we have to thank the previous creators of the journal: the editor Jānis Taurēns, the editorial board members Ēriks Jēkabsons and Andris Levāns, as well as the journal secretary Vanda Visocka and the University of Latvia Press. The inclusion in the SCOPUS database clearly is a recognition of the journal’s quality and simultaneously an approbation. Above all, I am most pleased that the inclusion of another journal in SCOPUS yields a further opportunity to Latvian historians and representatives of the sciences related to historical research to publish their research in an international environment and to become ever more integrated into the international scientific community. This will also mean a gradual shift of the journal’s content towards English language. Furthermore, it is the first issue of the journal since the change of editor. Taking over the editorship and preparing this issue was accompanied by various reflections on the importance of not only finding new facts and sources, but also of publishing our research and making it accessible to other researchers and interested parties. Naturally, in order to ensure this, it is necessary to have a sufficient number and variety of focused historical periodicals in Latvia, in which to publish the research and writings. I hope to continue the work launched by my predecessors, and uphold “The University of Latvia Journal. History” as one of such publishing opportunities. Starting this year, we will also return to publishing two separate issues annually. This year, the editorial board of the journal has been joined by a Polish representative – Tomasz Pudłocki, Associate Professor at the Institute of History, ...

    Breeding for intercropping

    2023  Volume 14

Abstract: ... those triggered by climate change. Despite their manifold benefits, the practice of intercropping has not risen ...

Abstract Intercropping, also known as mixed cropping, consists on simultaneously growing more than one species on a field. It has a great potential for enhancing water- and nutrient-use efficiency and improving plant productivity, yield stability and resilience to biotic and abiotic stress, including those triggered by climate change. Despite their manifold benefits, the practice of intercropping has not risen above its niche status in many regions of the world. The selection of varieties specifically adapted to intercropping remains a major practical challenge to its widespread deployment. This Research Topic hosted at Frontiers in Plant Sciences entitled “Breeding for intercropping” gathers a series of articles covering new insights in the areas of quantitative genetics, ecology, ecophysiology and agronomy integrating theoretical, experimental as well as participatory approaches.
