    Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the therapeutic effect of Qi Fu Yin (QFY) on Alzheimer's disease (AD) both computationally and experimentally. Network pharmacology analysis and molecular docking were conducted to identify potential targets and signaling pathways involved in QFY treating AD. Streptozotocin-induced AD rat model was used to verify important targets and predicted pathways. The components of QFY were identified using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The results indicate that the potential targets of QFY are highly enriched for anti-inflammatory pathways. Molecular docking analysis revealed stable structures formed between QFY's active compounds, including stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, and isorhamnetin, and the identified targets.

    Abstract Purpose: To investigate the effectiveness of modified Bu-Shen-Yi-Qi decoction (MBSYQ) in the treatment of osteoporosis associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and its underlying mechanisms of action.
    Methods: Disease targets, active ingredients and targets were predicted by TTD, CTD, DisGeNET, HERB (BenCaoZuJian as its Chinese name), and multiple-TCM databases; In addition, the screened targets were performed via the online platforms DAVID 6.8 and Metascape for GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis; The relationship between the MBSYQ and core targets were verified by molecular docking technique. Then we established a COPD-associated osteoporosis rat model by passive 24-week cigarette exposure. We assessed the efficacy of MBSYQ by lung histopathology assessment and distal femur/the first lumbar vertebra (L1) microstructural assay. In addition, we performed tibial RNA sequencing, which was validated by RT-PCR and Western blot.
    Results: Screening revealed that the 350 active compounds of MBSYQ anchored 228 therapeutic targets for COPD-related osteoporosis; KEGG pathway enrichment analysis showed that the key targets mainly regulated MAPK and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways. In vivo studies showed that MBSYQ treatment alleviated pathological alterations in lung tissue, and reversed the bone loss and microstructure damage in the femur/L1 of model rats. The RNA seq indicated that MBSYQ could upregulate genes associated with anti-oxidative stress and aerobic respiration. The GSEA analysis displayed that MAPK and PI3K/AKT pathways were inhibited by CS exposure and activated by MBSYQ.
    Conclusion: MBSYQ is effective in the prevention and treatment of COPD-related osteoporosis, partially achieved by improving oxygen metabolism and activating MAPK and PI3K/AKT pathways.

    Abstract Introduction: The evolution of nutritional strategies to improve the gut health and microbiota profiles of early-weaned piglets is essential to reduce diarrhoea caused by weaning stress. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of dietary supplementation of Qi-Weng-Huangbo powder, a traditional herbal medicine consisting of a mixture of
    Methods: 162 piglets were randomly assigned to the CON group (no PCE added), the PCEL group (300 mg/kg PCE) and the PCEH group (500 mg/kg PCE) at the end of the third week post farrowing. There were 9 replicates of each group with 6 pigs per replicate. The experiment lasted for 28 days and sampling was performed on the final day.
    Results: The results showed that the PCE diet increased the average daily gain (ADG) and final body weight (BW) compared to the CON group. Both supplemented doses of PCE reduced the faecal scores of piglets, and the diarrhoea rate in the PCEL group was significantly lower than that in the CON group. The application of PCE diets promoted the development of the spleen in piglets and up-regulated serum immunoglobulin concentrations to enhance immune function, which was also reflected in the down-regulated gene expression of the colonic TLR/MyD88/NF-κB pathway. Supplementation with PCE improved intestinal morphology, and all doses of PCE significantly increased villus height (VH) in the ileum, whereas colonic crypt depth (CD) was significantly lower in the PCEH group than in the CON group. The PCEH diet significantly increased the levels of valeric and isovaleric acid in the colon content.     Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Huang-Qi-Jian-Zhong-Tang (HQJZT) is a canonical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula that has been widely used in both the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, including gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, and chronic atrophic gastritis, in China.
    Aim of the study: In the present study, we investigated the gastroprotective potential of HQJZT in a rat model of indomethacin (IND)-induced gastric ulcer and explained the biochemical, cellular, and molecular mechanisms involved.
    Materials and methods: Observations were conducted at the macroscopic level to ascertain the ulcer index (UI) and the curative index (CI). Histopathological examinations were conducted, and a microscopic score (MS) was computed. The gastric juice volume, total acidity, pH value, and pepsin activity were quantified. Antioxidant and oxidative parameters were assessed, namely GSH, CAT, SOD, and MDA content. The RFLSI Pro instrument was employed to measure the blood flow within the gastric mucosa continuously. The mRNA levels of the inflammatory cytokines were assessed using droplet digital PCR (ddPCR). Molecular docking was employed to examine the interaction between representative active components of HQJZT and the binding sites associated with the NF-κB and STAT signaling pathways. The protein expression and localization of p-JAK, p-STAT, p-IκBβ, and p-NF-κB were evaluated through immunofluorescence analysis.
    Results: The administration of HQJZT treatment demonstrated a significant reduction in gastric lesions induced by IND, leading to a notable decrease in the UI. Additionally, HQJZT treatment significantly decreased gastric juice volume, acidity, and pepsin activity, accompanied by increased pH value. IND-treated stomachs exhibited severe hemorrhagic necrosis, submucosal edema, and epithelial cell destruction. However, the administration of HQJZT effectively counteracted these pathological changes. Furthermore, HQJZT administration significantly increased blood flow to the gastric mucosa. HQJZT enhanced antioxidant defenses and modulated oxidative stress by increasing SOD, CAT, and GSH activities while reducing MDA levels. Moreover, HQJZT reversed IND-induced increases in mRNA expression levels of inflammatory cytokines. Molecular docking analysis revealed that the representative active components of HQJZT could bind to the NF-κB and STAT signaling pathways. In addition, immunofluorescence microscopy revealed that HQJZT markedly attenuated the phosphorylation of IκΒβ, NF-κB, JAK, and STAT.
    Conclusions: The therapeutic and protective effect of HQJZT on gastric ulcers is attributed to its ability to suppress gastric acid secretion, enhance antioxidative defenses and blood flow, mitigate proinflammatory cytokines, and inhibit the activation of NF-κB and STAT signaling pathways.

    Abstract Introduction: NLRP3 inflammasome responses and gut microbiota have been shown an important role in lung cancer, however, the relationship between gut microbiota and NLRP3 inflammasome responses in lung cancer with Qi-yin deficiency remains elusive.
    Methods: To investigate the effect of the traditional Chinese medicine BuFeiXiaoJiYin (BFXJY) on NLRP3 inflammasome responses and dysbiosis in lung cancer with Qi-yin deficiency, the female BALB/cA-nu mice were treated with LPS and ATP to induce inflammation, and were intragastrically treated with warm Chinese medicine and smoked with shavings to induce Qi-yin deficiency, as well as were injected with 1 × 10
    Results: In this study, we found that BFXJY could inhibit the tumor growth in lung cancer with Qi-yin deficiency by reducing the production of IL-1β and IL-18 and inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation, which might be associated with the inhibition of PKC signaling. Furthermore, BFXJY could promote microbial diversity and balance the microbial composition changes induced by inflammation and Qi-yin deficiency in lung cancer.
    Conclusion: BuFeiXiaoJiYin ameliorates the NLRP3 inflammation response and gut microbiota in mice with lung cancer companied with Qi-yin deficiency. Our study provides a theoretical basis for the clinical development of therapeutic drugs targeting to treat lung cancer.

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Qi deficiency liver cancer (QDLC) is an important part of liver cancer research in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In the course of its treatment, Panax ginseng is often selected as the main Chinese herbal medicine, and its function has special significance in the tumor treatment of Qi deficiency constitution. However, its mechanism is not clear.
    Aim of the study: The research tried to evaluate the mechanism of Panax ginseng in the treatment of QDLC through fecal metabonomics and gut microbiota on the basis of previous pharmacodynamic evaluation.
    Materials and methods: Firstly, biomarkers and related metabolic pathways were screened and identified by metabonomics and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. Then, 16S rRNA sequencing technique was used to investigate the composition, β diversity and key differences of gut microbiota. Finally, the relationship among phenotypes, gut microbiota and fecal metabolites was comprehensively analyzed by spearman correlation coefficient.
    Results: 31 pharmacodynamic potential biomarkers and 20 synergistic potential biomarkers of effective parts of Panax ginseng on QDLC were screened and identified by fecal metabonomics. And then, 6 major metabolic pathways were searched, including bile acid biosynthesis, unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis, tryptophan metabolism, arachidonic acid metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, vitamin B6 metabolism. In the study of gut microbiota, at the genus level, 25 species of bacteria with significant differences of effective parts on QDLC and 23 species of bacteria with significant differences of synergistic action of ginsenosides and polysaccharides were screened. In addition, Spearman correlation analysis showed that there was a complex potential relationship among phenotype, gut microbiota and fecal metabolites during the development of QDLC and Panax ginseng intervention, which was mainly reflected in the close potential relationship between bacteria and fecal metabolites such as bile acids, unsaturated fatty acids and indole compounds.
    Conclusion: Through the changes of fecal endogenous metabolites and intestinal bacteria, the mechanism of Panax ginseng on QDLC were preliminarily clarified.

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Shen-Qi-Jiang-Tang granule (SQJTG), a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescription, has been widely used in clinical for diabetes, especially type Ⅱ diabetes. Previous anti-diabetic studies stumbled across that SQJTG has a potential kidney protective effect on diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, the protective mechanism of SQJTG on DN still needs to be explored.
    Aim of the study: The purpose of the present study was to explore the therapeutic effect of SQJTG on DN through both bioinformatics analysis and in vivo experiments.
    Methods and materials: The TCMIP database was used for screening potential compounds and targets of SQJTG, and the GeneCards, OMIM, DrugBank, and TTD databases were used for collecting DN-related genes. Then protein-protein interaction analysis for the common targets of SQJTG and DN was performed by the STRING database. Meanwhile, KEGG and GO were carried out using the Metascape and DAVID databases. In vivo experiments, to testify the potential kidney protective effects of SQJTG, STZ-induced DN mice with different dosages of SQJTG treatment were collected and the renal tissues were detected by H&E, PAS, Masson and TUNEL staining. Immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting were used to assess the proteins' expressions. Flow cytometry and ELISA assay were used to detect the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
    Results: Among the 338 compounds ascertained by SQJTG, there were 789 related targets as well. Moreover, 1,221 DN-related targets were predicted and 20 core targets were screened by the PPI analyses. According to GO and KEGG pathway analysis, SQJTG may affect DN via the TNF pathway. For the in vivo experiments, renal histomorphological examinations demonstrated that SQJTG treatment significantly ameliorated STZ-induced kidney damage and had a dosage dependence. Meanwhile, mice with DN were found to have dramatic increases in IL-1, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-12, but markedly decreased after administration of SQJTG. In addition, the protein levels of TNF signaling molecules, like p-P65, p-JNK, and p-p38, showed significantly elevated in kidney tissues of DN mice and attenuated after SQJTG treatment.
    Conclusions: SQJTG exerts a kidney protective effect in DN mice via modulating TNF signaling pathways, and it has promising applications for the treatment of DN.

    Abstract Qi deficiency liver cancer (QDLC) is an important part of liver cancer research in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In the course of its treatment, Panax ginseng is often selected as the main Chinese herbal medicine, and its function has special significance in the tumor treatment of Qi deficiency constitution. However, its mechanism is not clear. The research tried to evaluate the mechanism of Panax ginseng in the treatment of QDLC through fecal metabonomics and gut microbiota on the basis of previous pharmacodynamic evaluation. Firstly, biomarkers and related metabolic pathways were screened and identified by metabonomics and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. Then, 16S rRNA sequencing technique was used to investigate the composition, β diversity and key differences of gut microbiota. Finally, the relationship among phenotypes, gut microbiota and fecal metabolites was comprehensively analyzed by spearman correlation coefficient. 31 pharmacodynamic potential biomarkers and 20 synergistic potential biomarkers of effective parts of Panax ginseng on QDLC were screened and identified by fecal metabonomics. And then, 6 major metabolic pathways were searched, including bile acid biosynthesis, unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis, tryptophan metabolism, arachidonic acid metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, vitamin B6 metabolism. In the study of gut microbiota, at the genus level, 25 species of bacteria with significant differences of effective parts on QDLC and 23 species of bacteria with significant differences of synergistic action of ginsenosides and polysaccharides were screened. In addition, Spearman correlation analysis showed that there was a complex potential relationship among phenotype, gut microbiota and fecal metabolites during the development of QDLC and Panax ginseng intervention, which was mainly reflected in the close potential relationship between bacteria and fecal metabolites such as bile acids, unsaturated fatty acids and indole compounds. Conclusion: Through the changes of fecal endogenous metabolites and intestinal bacteria, the mechanism of Panax ginseng on QDLC were preliminarily clarified.

    Abstract Background: Functional constipation (FC) is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by slow bowel movement and defecation difficulties, significantly impacting patients' quality of life and exerting heavy financial burden to whole society. However, more than 50% FC patients are not completely satisfied with current therapies and alternative therapies are urgently required. Increasing evidences have demonstrated that traditional Chinese medicine has a good therapeutic effect on FC, which is well known for its multitarget and multimode effects on diverse diseases as well as less side effects. Furthermore, studies proved that Qi Di Laxative Decoction was an effective treatment for FC. Its safety and effectiveness should be verified by further studies.
    Methods: We will search the following electronic databases for randomized controlled trials to evaluate the clinical efficacy of Qi Di Laxative Decoction in treating FC: Wanfang and Pubmed Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Excerpta Medica database. Each database will be searched from inception to November 2020. The entire process will include study selection, data extraction, risk of bias assessment, and meta-analyses.
    Results: This proposed study will evaluate the clinical efficacy of Qi Di Laxative Decoction for patients with FC. The outcomes will include changes in FC relief and adverse effect.
    Conclusion: This proposed systematic review will evaluate the existing evidence on the clinical efficacy of Qi Di Laxative Decoction in treating FC.
    Dissemination and ethics: The results of this review will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publication. Because all of the data used in this systematic review and meta-analysis has been published, this review does not require ethical approval. Furthermore, all data will be analyzed anonymously during the review process.
