Abstract Conjugated polymers (CPs) have been developed quickly as an emerging functional material with applications in optical and electronic devices, owing to their highly electron-delocalized backbones and versatile side groups for facile processibility, high mechanical strength, and environmental stability. CPs exhibit multistimuli responsive behavior and fluorescence quenching properties by incorporating azobenzene functionality into their molecular structures. Over the past few decades, significant progress has been made in developing functional azobenzene-based conjugated polymers (azo-CPs), utilizing diverse molecular design strategies and synthetic pathways. This article comprehensively reviews the rapidly evolving research field of azo-CPs, focusing on the structural characteristics and synthesis methods of general azo-CPs, as well as the applications of charged azo-CPs, specifically azobenzene-based conjugated polyelectrolytes (azo-CPEs). Based on their molecular structures, azo-CPs can be broadly categorized into three primary types: linear CPs with azobenzene incorporated into the side chain, linear CPs with azobenzene integrated into the main chain, and branched CPs containing azobenzene moieties. These systems are promising for biomedical applications in biosensing, bioimaging, targeted protein degradation, and cellular apoptosis.

Abstract The control of Huanglongbing (HLB), one of the most destructive pests of citrus, relies heavily on the reduction of Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri Kuwayama. An in-depth understanding of ACP feeding behaviours among citrus plants is urgent for comprehensive management of orchards. An investigation was conducted in 37 citrus orchards in HLB epidemic areas, sampling shoots in the area with aggregation feeding of ACP (ACPf) and shoots in a neighbouring area without ACP feeding (CK), to study the interaction between leaf chemical composition and ACP psyllid feeding behaviours. Results of FTIR showed a strong absorption peak intensity, mainly representing functional groups originating from cell wall components in the leaf with ACP feeding. As compared with the control, cell wall components, such as alkali-soluble pectin, water-soluble pectin, total soluble pectin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, of the cell wall of ACPf increased by 134.0%, 14.0%, 18.0%, 12.5%, and 20.35%, respectively. These results suggest that cell wall mechanical properties significantly decreased in the term of decreases in pectin performance and cellulose mechanical properties. In addition, there was a remarkably lower boron (B) content in leaves and cell wall components with ACP feeding. Further analysis indicated that leaf B content significantly affected leaf cell wall components. Taken together, we provide evidence to demonstrate that the regional distribution of nutrient imbalance in orchards could affect psyllid feeding behaviour by weakening the cell wall structure, resulting in epidemic variation in ACP. This could help us to understand the management of psyllid infections in orchards with unbalanced nutrition.

Abstract There is currently no standard, evidence-based approach for sizing the Thoraflex Hybrid prosthesis in frozen elephant trunk surgery. We present regional data on 906 Thoraflex grafts implanted in the United Kingdom between December 2012 and August 2021 to emphasize the heterogeneity in sizing practices and evaluate the impact this may have on clinical outcomes. Highlighting this heterogeneity will help develop an evidence-based approach to prosthesis sizing, thereby aiding decision-making for arch repair.

Abstract We design algorithms for Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) which consists in decomposing a matrix into the sum of a low rank matrix and a sparse matrix. We propose a deep unrolled algorithm based on an accelerated alternating projection algorithm which aims to solve RPCA in its nonconvex form. The proposed procedure combines benefits of deep neural networks and the interpretability of the original algorithm and it automatically learns hyperparameters. We demonstrate the unrolled algorithm's effectiveness on synthetic datasets and also on a face modeling problem, where it leads to both better numerical and visual performances.

Abstract Machine/deep learning has been widely used for big data analysis in the field of healthcare, but it is still a question to ensure both computation efficiency and data security/confidentiality for the protection of private information. Referring to the data-sharing function of the federated learning (FedL) model, we propose an optimized data-sharing FedL (DSFedL) framework via a data-sharing hub by evaluating an accuracy-privacy loss function. When applied to the derived non-identically and independently distributed (nonIID) datasets simulated from three open-source cardiothoracic databases (i.e., ICBHI, Coswara COVID-19, MIT-BIH Arrhythmia), our optimized DSFedL works efficiently and the results show an optimal outcome of both the accuracy/efficiency and data security/confidentiality management.Clinical Relevance-This provides a proof of concept for using DSFedL in clinical applications, particularly in those settings that require data confidentiality control.

Abstract Background: Type A aortic dissection (TAAD) is a life-threatening clinical emergency requiring timely surgical intervention. If untreated, 50% of TAAD die within the first 24 h, with mortality increasing by 1%-2% every passing hour within the first 48 h of presentation. Surgical repair of TAAD is a major procedure associated with relatively high mortality and morbidity postoperatively. Several inflammatory biomarker have been linked to aortic dissection (AD) as diagnostic and/or prognostic tools, one example is the monocyte count to high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR).
Aims: This commentary aims to discuss the recent study by Savas et al. which investigated the use of MHR as a predictive biomarker for in-hospital mortality following surgery for TAAD.
Methods: We carried out a literature search on multiple electronic databases including PUBMED and Scopus to collate research evidence to assess the value of MHR as a prognostic biomarker in AD.
Results: Savas et al. proved that MHR is an effective predictive biomarker for in-hospital mortality following surgical repair of TAAD by demonstrating that MHR was independently associated with in-hospital mortality in this subset of patients.
Conclusion: Despite the advancement in surgical and perfusion techniques, surgical management of TAAD remains associated with relatively high risk of mortality and morbidity. Using prognostic biomarkers such as MHR can provide a means of reducing in-hospital mortality by identifying those at risk. Yet, further research into this area is encouraged.
