Abstract China is a unified multi-ethnic country. Although research on teacher stress is plentiful in this context, the specific case of Minzu ("ethnic") teachers is under-researched. Using Minzu schools located in a diverse county of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (North China), as a case study, the authors examine factors behind Minzu teacher stress. Using mixed methods, three main results were identified by analyzing interviews and questionnaires with both the software NVivo and dialogical discourse analysis: societal, school and Self factors. In general, the teachers confirmed that their job was extremely stressful. While some of these aspects derived directly from the specific context of Minzu education (e.g., rural and pastoralist families send their children to towns leading to teachers taking over parents' responsibilities), some elements were also found in other contexts of Chinese education and/or internationally. The article ends with some recommendations specifically about Minzu aspects in the treatment of teacher stress, which will also be of interest for international audiences.

Abstract This paper examines the construction of identities of three intercultural couples who share English as a lingua franca (but also other languages) in their day-to-day communication in Hong Kong, one of China’s Special Administrative Regions. I argue that this type of language contact, to date insufficiently studied, can generate new ways of looking at intimate intercultural relationships. The study is based on an anti-essentialist but constructionist understanding of identity, that allows bringing out a number of misunderstandings and identity games present in the couples’ discourses.

Abstract This paper is based on a postmodern approach to identity, i.e. identity is seen as unfixed, transient and contextually created. Through the narratives of French Erasmus exchange students on their daily lives in Finland, I demonstrate how they express, enact and co-construct multiple and unstable identifications with the various groups they interact with (us-/we-/they-hoods). Due to their specific status in the host country (they are ‘passing’ foreigners), Erasmus exchange students experience what can be described as “être-ensemble”. But what are the impacts of such a context on the ways the students talk about themselves and others (Finns, people from their own country and other Erasmus students)? The Erasmus programme is often portrayed by students themselves but also policy makers and researchers as a time of strong communal and intercultural experiences. Is this a postmodern myth? Based on interviews with Erasmus students from the Turku campus (south-western Finland), the analysis of pronoun uses and represented discourses in French will help to provide some answers to the complex question of identification.

Abstract About 200 students from 35 different countries stepped onboard MV Oceanic II as part of The Scholar Ship voyage in 2007. Organised by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCC) and a consortium of 10 international universities, this « Semester at Sea » offered students the possibility of touring around the world during 16 weeks, and to follow an array of courses, and to do “academic field work”. The central aim of the cruise (which took place also in 2008 but was discontinued afterwards because of a lack of funding), was to help the students to develop their intercultural competence. In this paper I examine the vision of the “intercultural” resulting from this experience using different documents (narratives, blogs, official documents, etc.). Can this type of cruise lead to intercultural encounters?

Abstract Abstract Like many concepts and notions used in various subfields of education, the idea of democracy is both floating and polysemic. It can also be a conveniently loose term that can be used by some to position themselves above others and to ‘teach them’ lessons about how to ‘do’ democracy, often creating unjustified hierarchies and moralistic judgements. Based on Mikhail Bakhtin’s concepts of 'authoritative discourse and internally persuasive discourse', this article examines how the contested idea of democracy is constructed and negotiated at a key International Conference on democratic education. Excerpts from talks given at the conference serve as case studies in this paper, without the intention to generalise about discourses of democracy in education. The results hint at uncritical attempts, often based on pathos, to totalise and generalise ‘democracy/the democratic’ especially within discourses on ‘democratic schools’. Such discourses can contribute to cultural othering and stereotyping, as well as, simplistic assumptions about how ‘democracy’ functions and comes-into-being. They can also help the utterer hide their sentiments. Thus, the aim of this paper is to deconstruct an essentialised and somewhat empty vision of democracy discourse in education. The fact that the idea of ‘freedom’ is often used as a synonym for ‘democracy’ during the conference is also discussed.

Abstract This exploratory article represents an attempt to examine and problematize the links between the COVID-19 crisis and interculturality for education. Aiming at teacher educators, we review problems with the notion of interculturality in light of the crisis. We argue that these problems were not created by the crisis, but that the crisis unveiled them. In the first part of the article we suggest that these issues should be approached by looking into interculturality (and companion terms such as “democracy” and “equality”) as an ideology that deserves deconstructing, unthinking, reconstructing and rethinking. We also describe the problems triggered by this ideology: the need to shift from “dead imagination” (culture, difference, etc.) to unearthing the “groundwater” of the economy and globalization in the way interculturality functions. We then propose a set of three principles that could be used by teacher educators to train future teachers to deal with interculturality afresh: “ Beyond comparison”, “The mirror: turning inward”, and “ Questioning the unquestionables”.

Abstract Academic Mobility and Migration have now become a reality for most people involved in higher education. The imaginary figure of the medieval "wandering scholar" (Pietsch) has never been as true as today. We also know for sure that they are actively contributing to the postmodern transformation of the 'social as society' into the 'social as mobility' (Urry). Written by leading and emerging scholars, this volume explores the current and potential impact of this type of Academic Mobility and Mi
