    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: The Yi people in the Xiaoliangshan region in southwest China have a unique practice of combining ritual treatment and traditional medicine to care for patients. Despite increasing urbanization in the area, they have managed to preserve their distinctive lifestyle and extensive knowledge of traditional medicinal plants, setting them apart from other regions. However, there is a lack of systematic documentation on the knowledge of traditional medicinal plants used by the Yi people in Xiaoliangshan.
    Aim of the study: This research aims to achieve the following objectives: 1. Document the diversity of medicinal plants used by the Yi people and explore their therapeutic usages. 2. Evaluate and analyze the main types of diseases with a high incidence in the local area and identify the types of medicinal plants used to treat these diseases. 3. Explore the underlying geographical and human factors influencing both disease prevalence and medicinal plant usage.
    Methods: Ethnobotanical research methods were used to record and analyze the medicinal plants used by the Yi in Xiaoliangshan. Experts identified all plant specimens collected during ethnobotanical field surveys. The types of diseases treated by medicinal plants were classified according to the International Classification of Primary Care -
    Results: A total of 125 medicinal plants were recorded after interviewing 193 participants. Of the medicinal plants identified, those with over 100 use reports were Paris polyphylla (202 use reports), Taxillus sutchuenensis (183), Artemisia indica (149), and Papaver somniferum (113). A total of 14 disease categories were recorded, with those related to the following categories having higher Informant Consensus factor values (ICF ≥0.85): Pregnancy, Childbearing, Family Planning, General and Unspecified, Urological, Respiratory, Musculoskeletal, and Skin. The highest quantity of medicinal plants is utilized to improve specific diseases and health problems, namely those related to Digestion, Skin, and Musculoskeletal. Fewer plant species were utilized for diseases or health issues associated with Eyes, Psychological, or Pregnancy, Childbearing, and Family Planning. The use reports from the informants also revealed how some medicinal plants are used to treat a variety of diseases or health issues. For instance, Malva pusilla is used for inducing abortion, treating postpartum hemorrhage, and joint sprains; Artemisia indica is used for treating malaria; Argentina lineata is used to remedy tuberculosis and malaria. Taxillus sutchuenensis is used for dealing with cold, pneumonia, and other ailments.
    Conclusions: The Yi people in Xiaoliangshan have a rich knowledge of traditional medicinal plants. Decoction and wine brewing are the most common processing methods used for these plants, which are utilized to treat a wide range of diseases. The characteristics of the medicinal use of the Yi people reflects the alpine mountainous environment in which they live, and their medical practices are closely related to traditional healing culture. This study enhances our understanding of the Yi traditional medicine via documentation and offers a valuable reference for future research and the development of new drugs.

    Abstract Background: The Yi people are a sociolinguistic group living in Mile City, which is their typical settlement in southeastern Yunnan, China. Over the long history of using medicinal plants, the Yi people have accumulated and developed a wealth of traditional medicinal knowledge, which has played a vital role in their health care. However, only a few studies have been performed to systematically document the medicinal plants commonly used by the Yi people. This study provides fundamental data for the development and application of ethnomedicine as well as supports the conservation of the traditional medical knowledge of the Yi people.
    Methods: This study was conducted from May 2020 to August 2022 and involved five townships in Mile. Information regarding medicinal plants was obtained through semistructured interviews, key informant interviews, and participatory observation. The collected voucher specimens were identified using the botanical taxonomy method and deposited in the herbarium. Ethnobotanical data were analyzed using informant consensus factor, relative frequency of citation, and fidelity level.
    Results: In total, 114 informants distributed in five townships of Mile were interviewed. The Yi people used 267 medicinal plant species belonging to 232 genera and 104 families to treat various diseases. Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, and Fabaceae were the most commonly used plant families by the Yi people. In addition, herbs were most commonly used by the Yi people. Whole plants and roots were the preferred medicinal parts. Decoctions were the most common method of herbal medicine preparation. There are 49 different recorded diseases treated by Yi medicinal plants, and among them, respiratory diseases, rheumatism, traumatic injury, fractures, and digestive system diseases have the largest number of species used. A quantitative analysis demonstrated that plants such as Zingiber officinale, Lycopodium japonicum, Aconitum carmichaelii, Panax notoginseng, Cyathula officinalis, and Leonurus japonicus played crucial roles in disease prevention and treatment.
    Conclusion: Traditional knowledge of medicinal plants is closely associated with the social culture of the local Yi people. The medicinal plants used for health care in the study area were diverse. Local healers were skilled at using medicinal plants to treat various diseases. Their treatment methods were convenient and unique, exhibiting distinctive regional characteristics. However, the inheritance of their traditional medicinal knowledge and protection of wild medicinal plant resources are facing serious challenges, including the decreasing number of local healers, aging of healers, lack of successors, and excessive harvesting of medicinal plant resources. This ethnobotanical survey provides a useful reference for the sustainable utilization and protection of medicinal plant resources in Mile and the inheritance of traditional medicinal knowledge of the Yi people.

    Abstract Yi Mai Jian herbal formula (YMJ) is formulated with Eucommiae Folium, Astragali Radix, Ligustri Lucidi Fructus, and Elaeagnus Fructus to improve bone function in traditional Chinese medicine. The anti-osteoporotic effects of YMJ in bone metabolism were evaluated in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. The skeletal structure of the femur and vertebrae was analyzed after treating OVX rats with YMJ for 114 days. The results showed that YMJ significantly increased the bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular number (Tb. N) of the femur and 5th lumbar vertebrae and reduced trabecular separation (Tb. Sp). Moreover, trabecular bone volume/total tissue volume (BV/TV), bone stiffness, and maximum femur load were significantly increased. The serum concentrations of NTX1 and PYD were significantly decreased. According to these results, YMJ could ameliorate osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats. Eucommiae Folium and Elaeagnus Fructus inhibited osteoclast differentiation, Ligustri Lucidi Fructus inhibited calcium reabsorption, Astragali Radix stimulated osteoblast proliferation, and Astragali Radix and Eucommiae Folium stimulated mineralization. Therefore, the combination of the four herbs into one formula, YMJ, could alleviate bone remodeling caused by low estrogen levels. We suggest that YMJ could be a healthy food candidate for preventing post-menopausal osteoporosis.

    Abstract Background: Yi-Qi-Huo-Xue Decoction (YQHXD), a traditional Chinese medicine formula, has demonstrated efficacy in the clinical treatment of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) for over a decade. Nevertheless, the precise pharmacotherapeutic compounds of YQHXD capable of penetrating into cerebral tissue and the pharmacological underpinnings of YQHXD remain ambiguous.
    Methods: The active components of YQHXD in rat brains was analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The potential targets, pathways and biological progresses of YQHXD ameliorating ICH induced injury was predicted by network pharmacology. Moreover, collagenase-induced ICH rat model, primary cortex neurons exposed to hemin and molecular docking were applied to validate the molecular mechanisms of YQHXD.
    Results: Eleven active components of YQHXD were identified within the brains. Employing the Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases, our investigation concentrated on the roles of autophagy and the BDNF/TrkB signaling pathway in the pharmacological context. The pharmacological results revealed that YQHXD alleviated neurological dysfunction, brain water content, brain swelling, and pathological injury caused by ICH. Meanwhile, YQHXD inhibited autophagy influx and autophagosome in vivo, and regulated cortex neuronal autophagy and TrkB/BDNF pathway both in vivo and in vitro. Subsequently, N-acetyl serotonin (NAS), a selective TrkB agonist, was employed to corroborate the significance of the BDNF/TrkB pathway in this process. The combination of NAS and YQHXD did not further enhance the protective efficacy of YQHXD in ICH rats. Additionally, outcomes of molecular docking analysis revealed that nine compounds of YQHXD exhibited potential regulatory effects on TrkB.
    Conclusions: Ipsilateral neuronal autophagy and BDNF/TrkB pathway were activated 72 h after ICH. YQHXD effectively resisted injury induced by ICH, which was related with suppression of ipsilateral neuronal autophagy via BDNF/TrkB pathway. This study provides novel insights into the therapeutic mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine in the context of ICH treatment.

    Abstract Background: Folk plant nomenclature is a part of knowledge of indigenous people often used to distinguish plant species. This study aimed to document the folk botanical nomenclature of the Yi people in Xiaoliangshan, Yunnan Province, which has not been systematically investigated to date. The results of this study will assist in conserving biodiversity and the language of the Yi people and will promote the transmission of ethnobotanical knowledge.
    Methods: An ethnobotanical survey of plants used by the Yi people in Xiaoliangshan, Yunnan Province, was conducted from September 2019 to August 2021. Semi-structured interviews and key informant interviews were conducted to collect and document ethnobotanical information, which was then used to analyse the folk botanical nomenclature of the Yi people. In addition, the folk names of plants used by the Xiaoliangshan Yi community were compared with those of the Yi people living in the Daliangshan, where the environment is considerably different.
    Results: In this study, 266 informants were interviewed, and the names of 228 indigenous plants were extracted from 3088 use reports. The nomenclature used by the local Yi people is based on plant characteristics, plant habitat, plant use, and the local culture. By comparing the folk plant names of the Yi people in Xiaoliangshan with those of the Yi people in Daliangshan, we found that the plant names of the two places have some similarities and also with their own unique characters. The important folk plant names of the Yi people in Xiaoliangshan usually have a monosyllable non-binomial structure or have and "divine attributes" in their names.
    Conclusions: The Yi people in Xiaoliangshan have a rich and diverse knowledge of plant naming determined by cultural, and environmental factors. The botanical nomenclature of the Yi people has distinct rules and characteristics, and the plant naming directly includes important plants that they believe to be used and protected, which is of great significance to the protection of biodiversity.

    Abstract Yi-Yi Mixture, an efficient Chinese medicine preparation composed of four herbal medicines, has been used in clinical practice in China for the treatment of acute pancreatitis over twenty years. However, its functional materials against acute pancreatitis remains unclear, which is a huge obstacle for quality control. In this study, a metabolome-oriented network pharmacology strategy was proposed to clarify its potential substances and further screen out quality markers. Firstly, an Ultra-High performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry method was utilized to profile the chemical constituents in Yi-Yi Mixture. Secondly, metabolic exposure of chemical constituents as well as their global metabolites produced in biological systems were profiled and defined as metabolome of Yi-Yi Mixture. Then, the metabolome targets were predicted based on network analysis. As a result, a total of 66 chemical components were characterized, including 6 stilbenes, 21 anthraquinones, 7 phenols, 13 neolignans, 3 naphthalenes and 16 other types. Moreover, metabolic profiles of YYM (32 prototypes and 37 metabolites) were analyzed in rat bio-samples. Among them, resveratrol, emodin, chrysophanol, rhein and their derivatives were detected in multiple tissues/organs, revealing their potential as key pharmacodynamic substances. These were further confirmed by metabolome-oriented network analysis and molecular docking techniques. This is the first comprehensive investigation on chemical and metabolic profiles of Yi-Yi Mixture, and the results provided scientific foundation for further research on quality control and clinical-safe medication administration.

    Abstract Background: Yi-Qi-Jian-Pi Formula (YQJPF) is a herbal medicine that is used to treat patients with liver failure. However, scientific evidence supporting the treatment of hepatic fibrosis with YQJPF has not been forthcoming. The present study aimed to determine the mechanisms underlying the anti-fibrotic effects of YQJPF in mouse models of hepatic fibrosis.
    Methods: Mice were randomly assigned to control, hepatic fibrosis model, silymarin (positive treated), and low-, medium- and high-dose YQJPF (7.5, 15, and 30 g/kg, respectively) groups. Liver function, inflammatory cytokines, and oxygen stress were analyzed using ELISA kits. Sections were histopathologically stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Masson trichrome, and Sirius red. Macrophage polarization was measured by flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. Potential targets of YQJPF against hepatic fibrosis were analyzed by network pharmacology of Chinese herbal compound and the effects of YQJPF on the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β)/Suppressor of Mothers against Decapentaplegic family member 3 (Smad3) signaling pathway were assessed using qRT-PCR and immunohistochemical staining. Finally, metagenomics and LC-MS/MS were used to detect the intestinal flora and metabolites of the mice, and an in-depth correlation analysis was performed by spearman correlation analysis. The data were compared by one-way ANOVA and least significant differences (LSDs) or ANOVA-Dunnett's T3 method used when no homogeneity was detected.
    Results: We induced hepatic fibrosis using CCl
    Conclusions: YQJPF can reverse liver fibrosis by inhibiting inflammation, suppressing oxidative stress, regulating the immunological response initiated by macrophages, inhibiting TGF-β/Smad3 signaling and regulating intestinal flora homeostasis. Therefore, YQJPF may be included in clinical regimens to treat hepatic fibrosis.

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Herbal formulas from Traditional Chinese Medicine are common and well-established practice for treating acute pancreatitis (AP) patients. However, little is known about their bioactive ingredients and mechanisms, such as their targets and pathways to inhibit inflammation.
    Aim of the study: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Qing Xia Jie Yi Formula (QXJYF) granules on AP and discuss the molecular mechanisms involved.
    Materials and methods: Major compounds in QXJYF granules were identified using UPLC-quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Orbitrap MS). The effect of QXJYF granules on experimental AP models both in vitro and in vivo, and detailed mechanisms were clarified. Two AP models were induced in mice by intraperitoneally injections of caerulein or L-arginine, and QXJYF granules were used to treat AP mice in vivo. Histological evaluation of pancreas and lung, serum amylase and lipase levels, serum inflammatory cytokines, inflammatory cell infiltration and macrophage phenotype were assessed. Bone marrow derived macrophages (BMDMs) were cultured and treated with QXJYF granules in vitro. BMDM phenotype and glycolysis levels were measured. Lastly, clinical effect of QXJYF granules on AP patients was verified. Predicted severe AP (pSAP) patients eligible for inclusion were assessed for enrollment.
    Results: Nine major compounds were identified in QXJYF granules. Data showed that QXJYF granules significantly alleviated AP severity both in caerulein and L-arginine-induced AP models in vivo, pancreatic injury and inflammatory cell infiltration, systematic inflammation, lung injury and inflammatory cell infiltration were all improved after QXJYF treatment. QXJYF granules significantly reduced M1 macrophages during AP both in vivo and in vitro; besides, the mRNA expression levels of M1 genes such as inos, Tnfα, Il1β and Il6 were significantly lower after QXJYF treatment in M1 macrophages. Mechanistically, we found that HK2, PFKFB3, PKM, LDHα levels were increased in M1 macrophages, but significantly decreased after QXJYF treatment. Clinical data indicated that QXJYF granules could significantly reduce CRP levels and shorten the duration of organ failure, thereby reducing the incidence of SAP and preventing pSAP patients from progressing to SAP.
    Conclusion: QXJYF granules alleviated AP through the inhibition of M1 macrophage polarization by suppressing glycolysis.

    Abstract Buddhism and Taoism are among two of the major religions in China. Their "Tian-ren-he-yi" belief system promotes a conception of harmony between man and nature, which is an important guide for the construction of ecological civilization in China. Using data from Chinese listed manufacturing companies, this paper explores the impact and mechanism of Chinese local religious beliefs on corporate environmental governance. The results indicate that this belief system can improve corporate environmental performance. Furthermore, mechanism tests show that the "Tian-ren-he-yi" belief system promotes corporate environmental practices by reducing the pressure on management to achieve economic performance goals and increasing investment in environmental protection. Finally, the impact of the belief system on corporate environmental performance is more efficacious when the enterprises are under weak external supervision. Our results imply that the traditional religious culture is an important factor that influences corporate environmental performance in Chinese business practices.
