    Abstract This book provides 18 lively commentaries on Lacan’s Seminar VIII, Transference (1960-61) that explore its theoretical and philosophical consequences in the clinic, the classroom, and society. Including contributions from clinicians as well as scholars working in philosophy, literature, and culture studies, the commentaries presented here represent a wide-range of disciplinary perspectives on the concept of transference. Some chapters closely follow the structure of the seminar’s sessions, while others take up thematic concerns or related sessions such as the commentary on sessions 19 to 22 which deal with Lacan’s discussion of Claudel’s Coûfontaine trilogy. This book is not a compendium to Lacan’s seminar. Instead it attempts to capture through shorter contributions a spectrum of voices debating, deliberating, and learning with Lacan’s concept. In doing so it can be seen to engage with transference conceptually in a manner that matches the spirit of Lacan’s seminar itself. The book will provide an invaluable new resource for Lacan scholars working across the fields of psychoanalytic theory, clinical psychology, philosophy and cultural studies. Gautam Basu Thakur is associate professor of English at Boise State, USA and author of Postcolonial Theory and Avatar (2015) andPostcolonial Lack (2020) and co-editor of Lacan and the Nonhuman (2018). Jonathan Dickstein is an Independent Scholar of Lacanian psychoanalysis, computer science, and mathematics. He is the co-editor of Lacan and the Nonhuman (2018).

    Abstract Women have played important roles in the provision, management, and pursuit of knowledge about water resources from antiquity to the present. Taking a broad perspective, this commentary begins with evidence of women’s water knowledge in ancient societies, including a vignette of the famous Hellenistic scholar Hypatia of Alexandria who is widely known among modern feminist scholars. It then surveys the work of women pioneers and popularizers with an emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. These pioneers were historical exceptions who confronted institutional and societal exclusion of women from scientific disciplines and organizations. Before concluding this historical perspective, we reflect upon the importance of women’s traditional and Indigenous water knowledge, which have enormous cultural depth and geographic breadth. These historical, pioneering, and traditional bodies of water expertise pave the way and provide the context for our survey of women’s contributions to disciplines of hydrology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. To assess what has, and has not yet, been achieved, the final section presents a review of major water journals to assess their coverage of “women” and “hydrology,” and women’s representation in journal editorship. The results show that while research on these topics is limited in hydrology journals as compared to multidisciplinary water resources journals, women are emerging in the 21st century with a greater proportion of leadership roles in hydrologic societies, journals, and laboratories. As women’s contemporary roles in hydrologic research grow, new questions are being asked about gender dynamics in access to, and support within, the discipline.

    Abstract Purpose: To document baseline cervical sagittal characteristics in Lenke 1 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients and assess the alteration in these parameters with surgery.
    Methods: Pre-operative and 2-year postoperative radiographs of 82 Lenke 1 AIS patients recruited from five hospitals were analysed. Selected radiographic parameters capturing regional and global sagittal alignment were measured. Comparison was made between groups based on baseline thoracic kyphosis (TK: TK < 20°, TK ≥ 20°). Pre-operative and postoperative values were compared-the change in each radiographic parameter was correlated with the degree of sagittal and coronal correction.
    Results: At baseline, TK was 29.8° ± 16°, cervical lordosis (CL) was - 1° ± 14°, lumbar lordosis (LL) was - 57.1° ± 21°, C2-C7 sagittal vertical axis (SVA) was 16 ± 14 mm and C7-S1 SVA was - 15 ± 28 mm; 44% of patients had cervical kyphosis. Patients with thoracic hypokyphosis had a significantly lower LL and more kyphotic cervical spine compared to those with thoracic normohyperkyphosis. The effect of surgery on TK depended on pre-operative thoracic sagittal alignment-TK increased in patients with thoracic hypokyphosis, but decreased in patients with thoracic normohyperkyphosis. Neither CL nor C2-C7 SVA changed significantly with surgery; 46% of patients still had cervical kyphosis postoperatively.
    Conclusion: There is a high incidence of cervical kyphosis at baseline in AIS patients-more so in those with pre-operative thoracic hypokyphosis. Unlike TK, CL is not significantly altered with surgery-improvement in CL correlates weakly with sagittal correction of the structural curve.

    Abstract Photo-oxidase nanozymes are emerging enzyme-mimicking materials that produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon light illumination and subsequently catalyze the oxidation of the substrate. Carbon dots are promising photo-oxidase nanozymes due to their biocompatibility and straightforward synthesis. Carbon dot-based photo-oxidase nanozymes become active for ROS generation under UV or blue light illumination. In this work, sulfur and nitrogen doped carbon dots (S,N-CDs) were synthesized by solvent-free, microwave assisted technique. We demonstrated that sulfur, nitrogen doping of carbon dots (band gap of 2.11 eV) has enabled photo-oxidation of 3,3,5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with extended visible light (up to 525 nm) excitation at pH 4.     Abstract: A measurement of dielectron production in proton-proton (pp) collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV ...

    Abstract A measurement of dielectron production in proton-proton (pp) collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC, is presented in this Letter. The data set was recorded with a reduced magnetic solenoid field. This enables the investigation of a kinematic domain at low dielectron (ee) invariant mass m_{ee} and pair transverse momentum p_{T,ee} that was previously inaccessible at the LHC. The cross section for dielectron production is studied as a function of m_{ee}, p_{T,ee}, and event multiplicity dN_{ch}/dη. The expected dielectron rate from hadron decays, called hadronic cocktail, utilizes a parametrization of the measured η/π^{0} ratio in pp and proton-nucleus collisions, assuming that this ratio shows no strong dependence on collision energy at low transverse momentum. Comparison of the measured dielectron yield to the hadronic cocktail at 0.15<m_{ee}<0.6  GeV/c^{2} and for p_{T,ee}<0.4  GeV/c indicates an enhancement of soft dielectrons, reminiscent of the "anomalous" soft-photon and soft-dilepton excess in hadron-hadron collisions reported by several experiments under different experimental conditions. The enhancement factor over the hadronic cocktail amounts to 1.61±0.13(stat)±0.17(syst,data)±0.34(syst,cocktail) in the ALICE acceptance. Acceptance-corrected excess spectra in m_{ee} and p_{T,ee} are extracted and compared with calculations of dielectron production from hadronic bremsstrahlung and thermal radiation within a hadronic many-body approach.<br />

    Abstract The abundance and diversity of pollinator populations are in global decline. Managed pollinator species, like honey bees, and wild species are key ecosystem service providers in both natural and managed agroecosystems. However, relatively few studies have exhaustively characterized pollinator populations in diverse agroecosystems over multiple years, while also thoroughly documenting plant-pollinator interactions. Yet, such studies are needed to fulfill the national pollinator protection plans that have been released by the United States and other nations. Our research is among the first studies to respond to these directives by systematically documenting bee and plant biodiversity, bee-plant interactions, and bee-mediated pollen movement in farming systems of the Pacific Northwest, USA. Our data provides insight into the processes mediating pollinator and plant community assembly, persistence, and resilience across landscapes with variable crop and landscape diversity and agroecosystem management practices. These data will also contribute to the development of a United States pollinator database, supporting the United States' plan to promote pollinators. With few publicly available data sets that systematically take account of agroecosystem practices, plant populations, and pollinators, our research will provide future users the means to conduct synesthetic studies of pollinators and ecosystem function in a period of rapid and global pollinator declines. There are no copyright or proprietary restrictions for research or teaching purposes. Usage of the data set must be cited.

    Abstract Understanding the role of parton mass and Casimir color factors in the quantum chromodynamics parton shower represents an important step in characterizing the emission properties of heavy quarks. Recent experimental advances in jet substructure techniques have provided the opportunity to isolate and characterize gluon emissions from heavy quarks. In this Letter, the first direct experimental constraint on the charm-quark splitting function is presented, obtained via the measurement of the groomed shared momentum fraction of the first splitting in charm jets, tagged by a reconstructed D^{0} meson. The measurement is made in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, in the low jet transverse-momentum interval of 15≤p_{T}^{jet ch}<30  GeV/c where the emission properties are sensitive to parton mass effects. In addition, the opening angle of the first perturbative emission of the charm quark, as well as the number of perturbative emissions it undergoes, is reported. Comparisons to measurements of an inclusive-jet sample show a steeper splitting function for charm quarks compared with gluons and light quarks. Charm quarks also undergo fewer perturbative emissions in the parton shower, with a reduced probability of large-angle emissions.
