Abstract This study investigated the potential effects of climatic oscillations on CPUE of Eleutheronema rhadinum (East Asian fourfinger threadfin), a commercially valuable fish species in East Asia. Fishery data from Chang-Yuen Ridge between 2015 and 2022 was analyzed in conjunction with four climatic oscillation indices that were lagged by up to 5 years. The results revealed a fluctuating CPUE associated with the 1-year-lagged Ocean Niño Index (ONI lag 1) and 1-year-lagged Southern Oscillation Index (SOI lag 1) suggesting a potential effect between climatic oscillation indices and East Asian fourfinger threadfin CPUE. These findings can provide insights into the association between East Asian fourfinger threadfin abundance and climatic oscillations in Chang-Yuen Ridge, Taiwan; the insights are valuable for fishery management amidst changing climate conditions.

Abstract Background: Osteoporosis is a chronic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and increased risk of fracture. In Taiwan, Guilu Erxian Jiao (GEJ) is the commonly used formula of Chinese herbal medicines for patients with osteoporosis. However, the effect of GEJ on subsequent fractures in the long term is unclear. This is the first long-term case-control study of the effects of GEJ on the rates of fracture in patients with osteoporosis.
Methods: We collected data from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2019 from the Chang Gung Research Database. We interpreted from the reports of DXA to confirm whether the patients met the criteria for osteoporosis (T score ≤ -2.5). Eighty-five patients were enrolled in the GEJ group. After two propensity score matchings, 425 patients were identified as the non-GEJ group. We assessed four outcomes to confirm the effects of GEJ in patients with osteoporosis, including the change in the T-score, new occurrences of fractures, cumulative rate of fracture, and how many doses of GEJ need to be administered to effectively reduce fractures RESULTS: There was no significant difference in either the improvement in the T score or the 5-year overall fracture (p = 0.335) between these two groups. At the fracture-prone sites, the fracture in lumbar vertebrae was less in the GEJ group (p = 0.034). A total of 600 GEJ pills are required to effectively reduce the incidence of fractures (p value= 0.0039).
Conclusions: Patients who take at least 600 GEJ pills would have a decreased fracture risk at fracture-prone sites.

Abstract: ... from the Taiwan Chang Gung Research Database (CGRD) to compare outcomes in ACS patients with DM, CKD, and ...

Abstract BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus (DM), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and advanced age are associated with poor outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This real-world study utilized data from the Taiwan Chang Gung Research Database (CGRD) to compare outcomes in ACS patients with DM, CKD, and the elderly. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study enrolled 28,613 ACS patients diagnosed based on CGRD medical records between January 2005 and December 2019. Baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes were compared among groups based on patient characteristics. RESULTS Within the ACS cohort, 42.1% had DM, 48.2% had CKD, and 33.6% were elderly. Among them, 10.7% (3,070) were elderly patients with both DM and CKD. Elderly patients with DM and CKD had significantly higher risks of gastrointestinal bleeding (hazard ratio=11.32), cardiovascular events (HR=7.29), and all-cause mortality (HR=8.59). Patients with three or at least two of these risk factors had a 2.20-2.99-fold increased risk of recurrent ACS during the three-year follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS Patients with the combination of DM, CKD, and advanced age (elderly) experienced an 11.32-fold increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, 7.29-fold increased risk of cardiovascular events, and 8.59-fold increased risk of all-cause mortality compared to those without these risk factors. Furthermore, patients with two or more of these risk factors had a 2- to 3-fold increased risk of recurrent ACS. These findings emphasize the importance of managing multiple risk factors in ACS patients to improve outcomes.

Abstract Background: The Chang Gung Research Database (CGRD) is a de-identified database derived from original medical records of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (CGMH), which comprises seven medical institutes located from the northeast to southern regions of Taiwan. The volume of medical services performed in CGMH is large, and clinical and scientific studies based on the CGRD are reported to be of high quality. However, the CGRD as a useful database for research has not been analyzed before. The objective of the study was to analyze the CGRD with regard to its characteristics and coverage of Taiwan's population. Methods: We performed a nationwide cohort study using population-based data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). All patients who had any medical record of outpatient visits or admission between January 1, 1997, and December 31, 2010, were included, and the sex ratio, age distribution, socioeconomic status, urbanicity, severity of illness, prevalence of specific disease, and coverage of the CGRD were analyzed. Results: The sex ratio, age distribution, socioeconomic status, and urbanicity of the population of the CGRD are different from those of Taiwan NHIRD and medical centers in Taiwan (all the pairwise p < 0.05). The severity of comorbidities, and prevalence of specific diseases of the population of the CGRD are significantly higher than those of Taiwan NHIRD and medical centers in Taiwan for both outpatient and inpatient samples (all the pairwise p < 0.05). The overall coverage of the CGRD was 21.2% for outpatients and 12.4% for inpatients. The disease-specific coverage of the CGRD was 27–34% for outpatients and 14–21% for inpatients. Conclusions: The CGRD is a multi-institutional, original medical record-based research database with high overall and disease-specific coverage of Taiwan. The population of the CGRD has significantly higher severity of comorbidities, and prevalence of specific diseases than those of Taiwan NHIRD and medical centers in Taiwan.

Abstract Traditionally, soft tissue records are obtained by dental impression using impression materials; however, accurately recording the soft tissue immediately after tooth extraction is difficult. We measured the tissue changes after tooth extraction and compared two impression modalities (digital versus conventional) by measuring the changes at the soft tissue level. In this case, 15 patients with 17 single extraction sites were enrolled. Conventional impression (CI) using vinyl polysiloxane material and digital impression (DI) using an intraoral scanner were prepared immediately after extraction (T0) and at 2 months post-extraction (T1). Standard tessellation language files were generated for superimposition of the tissue surface. The tissue changes and discrepancies were measured on the superimposed surfaces. The differences in the changes and the discrepancy between the tissue surface impression at each time point were compared. At all measuring levels, the total tissue change was significantly different between groups DI and CI ( p < 0.05). DI exhibited a more pronounced tissue surface at both time points, and the total discrepancy was statistically significantly greater at T0 than at T1 ( p < 0.05). The values from DI and CI demonstrated small but significantly different for the same study material. The interpretation of such differences may depend on the clinical situation or scientific value.

Abstract Background and objective: When multiple complex air pollutants are combined in real-world settings, the reliability of estimating the effect of a single pollutant is questionable. This study aimed to investigate the combined effects of changes in air pollutants on small airway dysfunction (SAD).
Methods: We analysed Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) V-VIII database from 2010 to 2018 to elucidate the associations between annual changes in air pollutants over a previous 5-year period and small airway function. We estimated the annual concentrations of five air pollutants: NO
Results: A total of 29,115 individuals were included. We found significant associations between SAD and the quartiles of annual changes in NO
Conclusion: The combined effect of annual changes in multiple air pollutant concentrations were associated with an increased risk of SAD.
