Abstract The main goal of this essay is to outline the historiographical profile of Maria Montessori (1870 -1952), which has been subject to substantial investigation in recent years (Babini & Lama, 2000; De Giorgi, 2013; Foschi, 2012; Giovetti, 2009; Marazzi, 2000). These latest analyses have highlighted a previously unacknowledged complexity. The historiographical literature on Maria Montessori, her pedagogical method, and her experiences in different parts of the world is composed of numerous contributions characterized by different focuses and purposes. Abstract Gills of Maria-da-toca Hypleurochilus fissicornis collected at Ponta do Sambaqui-Florianópolis island-Brazil, were analyzed to describe the histopathology caused by metacercaria of Bucephalus margaritae. Gills were submitted to the routine histological techniques for embedding in paraffin and permanent mounting in Balsam and stereoscopic analysis. Metacercariae showed a branchial infection site pattern for encystations. The branchial infection site pattern is half-basalward in the primary branchial filament with amplitude of the infection of 1-3 metacercaria. Cysts occurred within branchial abductor muscle and cartilaginous and osseous tissues of the gills. Each metacercariae had a contentional hyaline parasitic capsule and melanin-like pigmentation. The half-apicalward region of the primary branchial filaments showed several dysplasia degrees, cartilage and osseous degeneration (pyknosis), thrombosis and immune exudated cells (mainly lymphocytes). Cytopathologies as thickening of the epithelium lining of the secondary branchial filaments were a response of the branchial infection site pattern of the metacercaria. Interlamellar obliteration and fusion of the lamellae due to the hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the epithelial lining as well as chloride cells occurred. Pyknosis of pillar cells and epithelial lining cells from the secondary branchial filaments were also present. Bucephalosis in H. fissicornis gills is no-hemorrhagic and no-fatal branchitis, but could compromises the gill functions and could permits the secondary opportunistic infections.

Abstract Introduction: Progress in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology and analyses is improving our comprehension of multiple sclerosis (MS) pathophysiology. These advancements, which enable the evaluation of atrophy, microstructural tissue abnormalities, and functional plasticity, are broadening our insights into the effectiveness and working mechanisms of motor and cognitive rehabilitative treatments.
Areas covered: This narrative review with selected studies discusses findings derived from the application of advanced MRI techniques to evaluate structural and functional neuroplasticity modifications underlying the effects of motor and cognitive rehabilitative treatments in people with MS (PwMS). Current applications as outcome measure in longitudinal trials and observational studies, their interpretation and possible pitfalls and limitations in their use are covered. Finally, we examine how the use of these techniques could evolve in the future to improve monitoring of motor and cognitive rehabilitative treatments.
Expert commentary: Despite substantial variability in study design and participant characteristics in rehabilitative studies for PwMS, improvements in motor and cognitive functions accompanied by structural and functional brain modifications induced by rehabilitation can be observed. However, significant enhancements to refine rehabilitation strategies are needed. Future studies in this field should strive to implement standardized methodologies regarding MRI acquisition and processing, possibly integrating multimodal measures. This will help identifying relevant markers of treatment response in PwMS, thus improving the use of rehabilitative interventions at individual level. The combination of motor and cognitive strategies, longer periods of treatment, as well as adequate follow-up assessments will contribute to enhance the quality of evidence in support of their routine use.

Abstract Giardia duodenalis is a protozoan parasite that infects many mammals, including dogs and cats. This waterborne and foodborne zoonosis is a major problem in one health. Treatment can be challenging because of long regimens and drug resistance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of single-dose nitazoxanide (NTZ) for dogs naturally infected by Giardia duodenalis. Although widely used in humans, pharmacological safety is incipient, since the approval of the safe use of nitaxozanide for dogs is not a consensus in the world. Fifty dogs diagnosed with G. duodenalis by zinc sulfate flotation technique (Faust method) and cysts detection by light microscopy. Half of the animals received a dose of 50 mg/kg of NTZ and the other half received 3 doses of 50 mg/kg of fenbendazole (FBZ), both orally. One week after treatment, new fecal exams were done to prove the effectiveness. Of the animals treated with NTZ, 84% were negative for the protozoan, while 76% of the animals treated with FBZ were negative, no significant difference was identified. Side effects such as vomiting and hyporexia were manageable in NTZ treatment and no changes in laboratory tests showed hepatic or renal impairment. We conclude that the use of NTZ in a single dose of 50 mg/kg is effective for canine giardiasis, constituting an option to be considered for dogs with relapses, poor response to conventional drugs and to facilitate administration regimens.
