Abstract During research into the reinterment in 1859 of John Hunter's remains in Westminster Abbey, it was learnt that there was 'a window to Hunter's memory' in St Mary Abbots church, Kensington, London. Research into that window shows that it in fact commemorates Hunter's residence within the parish, and that also of two other Kensington worthies. Their place of residence is identified, Hunter's is illustrated and a nice connexion is found with a window in Gloucester cathedral in memory of Drs Jenner and Baron.

Abstract John Hunter died in 1793 and was buried in the vaults of the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London. In 1859, the vaults were required to be cleared and Hunter's coffin was found and his remains were reinterred in Westminster Abbey beneath a memorial brass. In the course of research on several such memorials in a Worcestershire village church, a letter was found that a clerk, having misread the writer's signature, consequently misfiled. Following this lead, it is now possible to tell something not only of the genesis of Weekes's statue of Hunter but also of the making and cost of the brass over his grave.

Abstract John Jones was a pioneer of American Surgery. Born in Long Island, New York in 1729, he received his medical degree in France from the University of Rheims. He returned to the colonies and helped to establish the medical school that would later become Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons where he was appointed the first Professor of Surgery in the New World. He used his position to assert that surgeons trained in America should be familiar with all facets of medicine and not be mere technicians. Before the outbreak of the American Revolution, he wrote a surgical field manual, which was the first medical text published in America. A believer in the principles of the American Revolution, he would go on to count Benjamin Franklin and George Washington as his patients. Despite achieving many firsts in American medicine, his influence on surgical training is his most enduring legacy.

  10. Article: Modeling the timing of spawning and hatching of shortnose sturgeon, Acipenser brevirostrum, in the Saint John River, New Brunswick, Canada

Usvyatsov, Sima / James Watmough / Jeffrey Picka / Matthew Kenneth Litvak / Ryan Scott Hardy / Travis Dawson Shepherd

Canadian journal of fisheries and aquatic sciences. 2012 July 19, v. 69, no. 8

    2012

Abstract: Timing of spawning and hatching of shortnose sturgeon, Acipenser brevirostrum, in the Saint John ...

Abstract Timing of spawning and hatching of shortnose sturgeon, Acipenser brevirostrum, in the Saint John River, New Brunswick, Canada, was estimated using inverse prediction. We examined egg incubation periods at 5, 9, and 13 °C to back-calculate spawning dates. No larvae hatched at 5 °C. At 9 and 13 °C, hatching began after 18 and 8 days post fertilization, respectively. Lengths of yolk-sac larvae reared in the laboratory at 13–21 °C were used to develop a temperature-mediated Gompertz growth model. The inverted Gompertz model, predicting larval age from larval size and water temperature, was applied to 671, 164, and 746 larvae captured in the wild in 2008, 2009, and 2010, respectively. Estimated hatching distributions peaked in late May, and mean spawning events were predicted to occur in late April – early May (9 °C scenario) and middle to late May (13 °C scenario). Larval ages at the two sampling transects, 4.5 km apart, were similar, while catch per unit effort was lower downstream, indicating mortality during dispersal. Inverse prediction of larval ages provides fast and cost-effective estimates of the timing of spawning, hatching, and larval migration in the wild.
