Abstract The implementation of air pollution control measures could alter the compositions of submicron aerosols. Identifying the changes can evaluate the atmospheric responses of the implemented control measures and provide more scientific basis for the formulation of new measures. The Fen-Wei River Basin is the most air polluted region in China, and thereby is a key area for the reduction of emissions. Only limited studies determine the changes in the chemical compositions of submicron aerosols. In this study, Baoji was selected as a representative city in the Fen-Wei River Basin. The compositions of submicron aerosols were determined between 2014 and 2019. Organic fractions were determined through an online instrument (Quadrupole Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor, Q-ACSM) and source recognition was performed by the Multilinear Engine (ME-2). The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) was also employed to evaluate the contributions of emissions reduction and meteorological conditions to the changes of submicron aerosol compositions. The results indicate that the mass concentrations of submicron aerosols have been substantially decreased after implementation of air pollution control measures. This was mainly attributed to the emission reductions of sulfur dioxide (SO

Abstract This study aims to explore the mechanism of NSAID-related gastric ulcer treated by JIA WEI WU QI SAN. Clean-grade SD rats were randomly divided into four groups. Group A was assigned as the control group. Groups B, C and D were intragastrically administered with 2.5mg/kg of indomethacin solution QD after 48 hours. After 15 days of treatment, group B was administered with 0.9% sodium chloride, group C was given rabeprazole (2mg/kg), and group D was administered with JIA WEI WU QI SAN (2g/kg). Abdominal aorta sampling was performed, and gastric tissues were isolated on the 29th day. The protein expression of p-P38MAPK and COX-2 were detected by western blot, while the concentration of PGE2 and IL-1 were determined by ELISA. (1) The expression of IL-1ingroup B dramatically declined in group D (P<0.01). (2)The expression of PGE-2dramatically increased in group D(P<0.01). (3) The expression of COX-2 increased in group D (P<0.05). (4) The expression of p-P38MAPK decreased in group D (P<0.05). JIA WEI WU QI SAN has multiple functions, including the activation of the p-P38MAPK signaling pathway, which promote the activation of COX-2, induce the arachidonic acid to increase the level of PG, and decrease the concentration of IL-1, thereby inducing an inflammatory reaction, and promote gastric mucosa repair.

Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Shi-Wei-Ru-Xiang pills (SW) as a tradition Tibetan medicine has been clinically proved effective in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment. However, the underlying mechanism of SW remains unclear.
Aim of the study: This study aimed to investigate the anti-arthritic effect of SW and its possible mechanisms of action.
Materials and methods: A CIA rat model in vivo, and IL-1β-stimulated synoviocytes or chondrocytes and a co-culture system (IL-1β-stimulated synoviocytes/chondrocytes) in vitro were used to evaluate the effects of SW on the treatment of RA. Arthritic score, paw swelling rate, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and Safranin-O-Fast green (S-O) staining were used to evaluate the anti-arthritic activity of SW in CIA rats. TUNEL assay or flow cytometry were performed to measure chondrocytes apoptosis in vivo and invitro. The effects of SW on the expression and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines were assessed by qRT-PCR and Elisa. The inhibitory effects of SW on the phosphorylation of p38, Erk1/2, and STAT3 were analyzed by Western blot.
Results: SW treatment significantly alleviated paw swelling, severity of arthritic and cartilage destruction in CIA rats. Moreover, SW decreased the expression of mRNAs of proinflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 in the synovium, suppressed the production of these pro-inflammatory cytokines in serum and hind paws, downregulated the protein expression of p-p38, p-Erk1/2 and p-STAT3, and protected the chondrocytes apoptosis in CIA rats. Consistent with the results in vivo, SW also inhibited the activation of MAPK and STAT3 pathways, suppressed the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in IL-1β-stimulated synoviocytes, and attenuated chondrocytes apoptosis in IL-1β-stimulated chondrocytes. In the co-culture system, SW pre-treatment in IL-1β-stimulated synoviocytes exhibited inhibition of chondrocytes apoptosis, which was associated with attenuation of inflammation in synoviocytes.
Conclusion: These results suggested that the underlying mechanisms by which SW exerts its anti-arthritis effect may be related to the reduction of proinflammatory cytokine levels, inhibition of p38, Erk1/2 and STAT3 phosphorylation, and attenuating of chondrocyte apoptosis.

Abstract Assessing regional sediment yield variation and their responses to the potential controlling factors are critical to develop specific strategies of soil conservation measures to adapt to future climate change. This study attempted to investigate the spatial–temporal variation of sediment load in the Wei River basin in the midstream of the Yellow River during 1961–2015 at 15 hydrological stations. The results indicated that annual sediment load in the past six decades decreased significantly (P < 0.01) with the changing trends of −6.43 × 10⁴, −3.86 × 10⁴, −4.6 × 10⁴ t/a at Xianyang, Zhangjiashan, and Zhuangtou stations, respectively. Annual sediment load exhibited abrupt changes in the mid-1990s, which were largely attributed to the strong effects of soil conservation measures in the study area. The spatial pattern of soil erosion were characterized by high sediment yield in the north with sparse vegetation cover and well-developed gullies, and low sediment yield in the south with flat plain and good vegetation cover in the Wei River basin. The results of the partial least squares-structural equation model (PLS-SEM) showed that vegetation changes and rainfall variability explained 62.3%, 47.3%, and 40.1% of the variation in runoff at Xianyang, Zhuangtou, and Zhangjiashan stations, respectively, whereas 59.4%, 17.6% and 48% of the variation in sediment load were explained by the combining effects of rainfall variability, changes of vegetation and runoff. This study provides a deep insight for understanding the effects of driving forces on sediment yield changes, and can be useful to regional soil conservation planning in the region.

This was mainly attributed to the emission reductions of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and primary organic aerosol (POA). In addition, the main components that drove the pollution episodes swapped from POA, sulfate, nitrate and less-oxidized organic (LO-OOA) in 2014 to nitrate and more-oxidized OOA (MO-OOA) in 2019. Due to the changes of chemical compositions of both precursors and secondary pollutants, the pollution control measures should be modernized to focus on the emissions of ammonia (NH₃), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) and volatile organic compounds (VOCₛ) in this region.

Abstract The incidence of asthma has increased in recent decades. Although corticosteroids and bronchodilators are used in clinical practice, the control of asthma remains a challenge. Allergic asthma is characterized airway inflammation mediated by type 2 immune response. Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) are an important source of type 2 cytokines IL-5 and IL-13, which contribute to the progress of asthma. Jia-Wei-Yu-Ping-Feng-San (JWYPFS), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been widely used to treat asthma in China. In this study we investigated the mechanisms of JWYPFS in the treatment of asthma, especially the effect on ILC2s important in airway inflammation. Female C57BL/6 mice were sensitized and challenged with OVA to establish a model of allergic asthma. Airway hyperresponsiveness was examined by direct airway resistance analysis. Inflammatory cell counts were determined in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Inflammatory cell infiltration and mucus hypersecretion in lung tissue sections was observed by HE and PAS staining, respectively. The numbers and proportions of ILC2s as well as the ILC2s-related transcription factors GATA3, IRF4, and type 2 cytokines were measured in lung tissue samples. Additionally, ILC2s were collected from mouse lung; ILC2s-related cytokines and GATA3 and IRF4 were evaluated after IL-33-induced activation of ILC2s

Abstract Indoor air pollution from bituminous coal combustion has been linked to the extremely high lung cancer rates of nonsmoking women in Xuan Wei County, Yunnan Province, China. Venting the smoke outdoors by installing chimneys was found to be effective at reducing the lung cancer risk in a cohort study of 21,232 farmers in central Xuan Wei. However, the lung cancer mortality rates in all 1.2 million residents of Xuan Wei have been increasing dramatically over the last four decades. It was higher than that in Yunnan Province and China overall, with significant heterogeneities in the geographic patterns of Xuan Wei. Intervention measures targeting certain types of coal or certain carcinogenic components in coal smoke need to be explored. To inform targeted intervention policies, it is essential to pinpoint the specific substance (particulate matter, organic extract, PAHs, free radicals, crystalline silica, and inorganic matter) that might account for the carcinogenicity of bituminous coal smoke. Exploring the underlying carcinogenesis mechanisms would also contribute to the intervention and control of the lung cancer epidemic in Xuan Wei, China. Here we review the suspected carcinogens and carcinogenesis mechanisms and discuss future research directions towards a better understanding of the etiology of lung cancer in Xuan Wei, China.

Abstract Background: In Xuan Wei, China, the lung cancer mortality rate is rising significantly more than that of the nation overall. However, it remains unclear 1) if improved diagnosis can just partially explain this observation and how other local risk factors may be correlated with the lung cancer mortality rate and 2) how the lung cancer mortality rates differ within Xuan Wei and how these spatiotemporal patterns are linked with local risk factors. To increase etiological knowledge, this study evaluated the spatial and temporal distributions of the health effects (the lung cancer mortality rates) from 2011 to 2015.
Methods: Four steps of spatial analysis were applied, as follows: 1) hotspot analysis to determine the geographical patterns of lung cancer mortality, 2) spatially-weighted sum to identify areas with higher health risks, 3) bivariate statistical analysis to assess the overall correlation between coal mines and lung cancer mortality, and 4) geographically-weighted regression to test for correlations among different towns within Xuan Wei.
Results: Women had higher lung cancer mortality rates than those in men, with an increasing trend in both sexes over time. The incidence rates in Laibin Town were the highest in Xuan Wei every year. Over the 5-year study period, the lung cancer mortality was increasingly concentrated in Laibin, Shuanglong, and Longchang, where the smoky coal mines are most concentrated. The population-level health risks from the coal mine in Xuan Wei were mapped and divided into five types of risk areas (Type I - Type IV). Correlation analysis revealed that there was no significant correlation between lung cancer mortality as a whole and coal mine distribution during the 5-year study period. However, the geographically-weighted regression revealed a stronger correlation in medium (Type III) and second-lowest (Type IV) health risks.
Conclusions: Xuan Wei lung cancer mortality has increased continuously since the third national retrospective surveys on the causes of death by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China (2004-2005), especially for local women and residents over 35 years of age. Geographically, lung cancer in Xuan Wei showed unique spatiotemporal clustering. The local lung cancer mortality was significantly correlated with the smoky coal mine geographically. Some specific towns (Laibin, Shuanglong, and Longchang) within Xuan Wei manifested high correlations between lung cancer mortality and coal mines. The effects of coal mines on lung cancer mortality rates also spread geographically outward from these areas. Public health concern regarding lung cancer in Xuan Wei should prioritize higher-risk towns surrounded by smoking coal mines. Intervention strategies for particular toxic coal types require further studies on their chemical characteristics and mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Additional studies are also warranted to systematically examine the local environmental health risks related to coal industries and combustion air pollution and eventually to conduct early screening of lung cancer for local people who are more exposed to smoky coal in high-risk areas.
