Abstract Controlling molecule aggregation in polymer films is one of the key factors in understanding the links between properties and structures in organic semiconductors. Here, we used poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) as the model system. By doping the insulating polar additive poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) into P3HT film and controlling the processing methods, we achieved the side-to-side H-aggregate and head-to-tail J-aggregate of P3HT molecules with different extents at room temperature. We have demonstrated that the solvent solidification rate plays an important role in the controlling of molecule aggregation, which finally influenced the solid-state phase separation in the film. Furthermore, based on a series of spectroscopy investigations, we quantified the electronic spatial coherence in different aggregations combined with the modified Franck-Condon model. Subsequently, we established the relationship between the processing method, the molecule aggregation, and the electronic spatial coherence.

Abstract Non-covalent interactions have been extensively used to fabricate nanoscale architectures in supramolecular chemistry. However, the biomimetic self-assembly of diverse nanostructures in aqueous solution with reversibility induced by different important biomolecules remains a challenge. Here, we report the synthesis and aqueous self-assembly of two chiral cationic porphyrins substituted with different types of side chains (branched or linear). Helical H-aggregates are induced by pyrophosphate (PPi) as indicated by circular dichroism (CD) measurement, while J-aggregates are formed with adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for the two porphyrins. By modifying the peripheral side chains from linear to a branched structure, more pronounced H- or J-type aggregation was promoted through the interactions between cationic porphyrins and the biological phosphate ions. Moreover, the phosphate-induced self-assembly of the cationic porphyrins is reversible in the presence of the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and repeated addition of phosphates.

Abstract While manipulating the helicity of nanostructures is a challenging task, it attracts great research interest on account of its crucial role in better understanding the formation mechanisms of helical systems. For the supramolecular chirality in self-assembly systems, one challenge is how to understand the origin of supramolecular chirality and inherent helicity information on nanostructures regulated by functionality-oriented stacking modes (such as J- and H-aggregation) of building blocks. Herein, two-component hydrogels were prepared by phenylalanine-based enantiomers and achiral bis(pyridinyl) derivatives, where helical nanofibers with inverse handedness as well as controllable helical pitch and diameter were readily obtained through stoichiometric coassembly of these building blocks. The helix inversion was achieved by the transition between the J- and H-aggregation of bis(pyridinyl) derivatives, which was collectively confirmed by circular dichroism, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and single X-ray crystallography. Interestingly, the helical coassemblies with opposite handedness could be obtained not only from the enantiomeric building blocks but also from the chiral monomers with the same configurational chirality by exchanging achiral additives. This work provides insight into the origin and helicity inversion of supramolecular chirality in molecular self-assembly systems and may shine light on the precise fabrication of chiral nanostructures for potential applications in smart display devices, optoelectronics, and biological systems.

Abstract Improving the reproducibility and air-endurance of organic resistance switching (RS) devices, in particular multilevel-cell RS devices, is critical for the confirmation of its competency to realize big data storage capability. However, such enhancement still remains challenging. In this report, we demonstrated that fluorine (F)-embedding should be an effective way to enhance the overall performance of RS devices. Abstract Studies of morphology of organic solar cells (OSC) in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structures are usually focussed on nanoscale morphology. However, morphology at molecular level, such as aggregation type, may also have a profound influence on the performance of OSCs. It is found that H- and J-aggregation coexist in BTIC-CF₃-m and can be easily controlled by different additives. This provides a chance to study and gain a deeper insight into the role of the two aggregation types by directly comparing their effect on various photovoltaic performance parameters. Two common additives, 1-chloronaphthalene (CN) and 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO), support the formation of H- and J-aggregation, respectively and have different effects on the photovoltaic performance of OSCs. H-aggregation favors a higher open circuit voltage (Vₒc), while J-aggregation favors a higher short circuit current (Jₛc). Both of these aggregation types can improve the fill factor (FF). On the whole, both the improvement of H- and J-aggregation can enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and the H-aggregation of BTIC-CF₃-m is more efficient in the system of PBDB-TF:BTIC-CF₃-m. Then, H- and J-aggregation are further tuned by solvent vapor annealing (SVA), and consequently the PCE is enhanced to 16.36% from its pristine value of 13.37%. It demonstrates that the morphology optimization, especially precise control of the H- and J-aggregations, is the key factor to further improving premium organic solar conversion systems.
