    Abstract Calcium phosphate films were fabricated on titanium substrates heated up to 773 K using radiofrequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. The deposition rate, phase and preferred orientation of the calcium phosphate films were studied. Immersion tests for the films were conducted using Hanks' solution and PBS(-), and the surface reactions on the specimens coated with the calcium phosphate films were investigated. The bonding strength between the coating films and the titanium substrates before and after the immersion tests was evaluated; the bonding strength decreased after the immersion tests. The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of SaOS-2 cells on a titanium plate coated with a calcium phosphate film was examined by conducting a culture test. Calcium phosphate coating increased the ALP activity of SaOS-2 cells cultured for 3 and 7 days. Titanium cylinders were coated with an amorphous calcium phosphate film and implanted into the mandibles of beagle dogs. An increase in the extent of bone-implant contact for the coated titanium cylinders was confirmed 8 to 12 weeks after implantation and compared with the case for uncoated titanium cylinders.

    Abstract Purpose: This study explored the pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and safety of evocalcet (KHK7580), a new calcimimetic agent, in healthy Chinese subjects following single and multiple doses.
    Methods: This was a single-center, open-label phase I trial conducted in China. The study started from the single-dose cohorts (1, 3, 6, 12 mg evocalcet, step-by-step administration) and proceeded to the multiple-dose cohort (6 mg evocalcet once daily for eight days). Blood and urine samples were collected at the designated time points for pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analysis. Safety was evaluated by treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs), clinical laboratory tests, vital signs, electrocardiograms (ECGs), and ophthalmological examination.
    Results: Among 42 enrolled subjects, eight in each single-dose cohort and 10 in multiple-dose cohort, 40 subjects completed the study. In single-dose cohorts, t

    Abstract Circular dichroism (CD) spectra for pseudo-two-dimensional chiral nanomaterials were systematically investigated and analyzed in relation to the rotational symmetry of the nanomaterials. Theoretically, an ideal two-dimensional chiral matter is CD inactive for light incident normal to the plane if it possesses threefold or higher rotational symmetry. If the matter has two- or onefold rotational symmetry, it should exhibit CD activity, and the CD signal measured from the back side of the matter is expected to be inverted from that measured from the front side. For pseudo-two-dimensional chiral gold nanostructures fabricated on glass substrates using electron beam lithography, matter with fourfold rotational symmetry is found to be CD active, even when special care is taken to ensure that the optical environments for the front and back sides of the sample are equivalent. In this case, the CD signal measured from the back side is found to be almost exactly the same as that measured from the front side. It is revealed that the observed chiro-optical behavior arises from three-dimensional chiral characteristics due to differences in the surface shape between the front and back sides of the structures. For matter that is two- or onefold rotationally symmetric, the CD signal measured from the back side is not coincident with that from the front side. For certain wavelength regions, the CD signals measured from the front side and back side are observed to be similar, while at other wavelengths, the inverted component of the CD signals is found to dominate. The observed CD spectral behavior for reciprocal optical measurement configurations is considered to be determined by a balance between the in-plane isotropic and anisotropic components of the chiral permittivity.

    Abstract The Japanese Health Ministry recently granted permission for the market distribution of genome-edited (GE) foods, yet there remains a lack of full understanding among consumers regarding this technology. In this study, we conducted a survey to assess the acceptability of GE foods among Japanese consumers and examined the impact of providing information about GE foods on their acceptability. We conducted a web-based survey among 3,408 consumers aged 20-69 years, focusing on three aspects: (1) the commercial availability of GE foods, (2) the consumption of GE foods by others, and (3) your own consumption of GE foods. The survey findings revealed that participants were most accepting of the consumption of GE foods by others, followed by their acceptance of GE foods being commercially available. Notably, participants' acceptance of GE foods increased in all three aspects after they viewed an informative video. The video had a particularly strong impact on participants who fully or partially understood its content, compared to those who did not. Furthermore, regression analyses showed that participants' understanding of two key areas, namely "Why are GE foods important" and "What procedures are in place to ensure the safety of GE foods," played a crucial role in increasing acceptability. Overall, these results indicate that providing information about GE foods to Japanese consumers can effectively enhance their acceptance of such foods. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the benefits and safety measures associated with GE foods in influencing consumer attitudes.

    Abstract Background and purpose: The right colic artery(RCA)and gastrocolic trunk(GCT)traverse around the pancreas and duodenum and branch divergently, thus, complicating right-sided colon cancer surgery. The usefulness of pancreatic/duodenum 3DCT imaging(pancreas/duodenum CT: PDCT)for laparoscopic right-sided colon cancer surgery was investigated.
    Patient and method: The patient was a woman, in her 80's with 2 sites of ascending colon cancer:(1)A-C, cT4b(retroperitoneum) N2aM0, Stage Ⅲc;(2)A, cT3N1bM0, Stage Ⅲb. A radical surgery was planned. Contrast-enhanced CT colonography( CTC)was performed preoperatively, and 3 3DCT images(CTC, arteriovenous 3DCT, and PDCT)were created using Workstation: Ziostation 2®(Ziosoft). These 3DCT images were combined and used for preoperative simulation and intraoperative navigation.
    Result: Composite images of CTC and arterial 3DCT identified the dominance of ileocolic artery(ICA)and RCA. In addition, a composite venous 3DCT image confirmed the branching and course of ileocolic vein(ICV)and right colic vein(RCV). Composite images of PDCT and arteriovenous 3DCT showed that the RCA branched from the superior mesenteric artery at the level of the third part of duodenum and ran ventral to the pancreatic head, while the RCV branched from the GCT in front of the pancreatic head, with the right gastroepiploic vein(RGEV). A laparoscopic combined ileal and retroperitoneal resection and D3 lymph node dissection with ICA/V and RCA/V root dissection were planned. Surgical simulation facilitated the identification of ICA/V and RCA/V and surgical procedure. The operative time was 310 minutes, and blood loss was 90 mL. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of(1)pT3(SS)N1bM0, Stage Ⅲb and(2)pT3 (SS)N1aM0, Stage Ⅲb. The patient was discharged 10 days post-surgery, without any complications. Currently, there is no apparent recurrence at 1-year follow-up.
    Conclusion: PDCT clarified the location of the RCA and GCT in relation to the pancreas and duodenum and complemented the laparoscopic right-sided colon cancer surgery.

    Abstract Background: While cervical cancer deaths have declined steeply in high-income countries due to the widespread use of the Papanicolaou test (Pap test), the same trend has not emerged in low or middle-income countries (LMICs). Access to screening in LMICs like India is limited due to barriers such as limited healthcare infrastructures, lack of sexual health education, and stigma demarcating sexually transmitted infections (STIs). HPV self-sampling (HPV-SS), a woman-centered and at-home method for screening, can be utilized as a unique screening tool to overcome some of these barriers. Our study examined the effectiveness of HPV-SS, supported by family-centred arts-based sexual health literacy on the uptake of cervical cancer screening among hard-to-reach women in rural and remote areas in India.
    Methods: Our community-based mixed methods pilot study recruited 240 participants (120 women and 120 male partners or family members) through female Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) across 3 Indian villages of Shirgoan, Khodala, and Jamsar in Palghar district. Inclusion criteria included women ages 30-69 who were under or never screened (UNS) and their male partners/family members aged 18 or over. Knowledge and attitudes about cervical cancer and screening and their perceived stigma surrounding STI were assessed using validated scales prior to and after attending a 2-hour arts-based sexual health education (SHE). In addition, participants' uptake of cervical cancer screening was assessed after attendance in SHE.
    Findings: Results revealed significant improvement in knowledge and attitudes about cervical cancer and screening, and a reduction in the STI stigma after participation in SHE sessions (overall mean difference in Knowledge: z = 6.1 ± 2.4, P < 0.001; attitudes about Pap-test and VIA: z = 2.2 ± 8.4, P < 0.001 and z = 2.9 ± 8.2, P < 0.001; STI stigma: z = 2.8 ± 12.4, P < 0.001). 118 out of 120 female participants chose to be screened and 115 opted for HPV-SS.
    Conclusions: The implementation of HPV-SS coupled with family-centered arts-based and culturally appropriate SHE is highly promising in promoting cervical cancer screening among hard-to-reach women. Evidence from our study can be used to advance public health policies and inform the scale-up of similar initiatives in other villages and states across rural India and other LMICs.

    Abstract Structural evaluation of ionic additions in calcium phosphates that enhance their performance is a long-lasting area of research in the field of biomedical materials. Ionic incorporation in β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) structures is indispensable for obtaining desirable properties for specific functions and applications. Owing to its complex structure and beam-sensitive nature, determining the extent of ion incorporation and its corresponding location in the β-TCP structure is challenging. Further, very few experimental studies have been able to estimate the location of Ag atoms incorporated in a β-TCP structure while considering the associated changes in lattice parameters. Although the incorporation alters the lattice parameters, the alteration is not significant enough for estimating the location of the incorporated Ag atoms. Here, Ag incorporation in a β-TCP structure was evaluated on atomic scale using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to unambiguously determine the location of the incorporated Ag atoms in the β-TCP structure by comparing z-contrast profiles of the Ag and Ca atoms by combining the state-of-art STEM observations and STEM image simulations. The Ag incorporation in the Ca(4) sites of β-TCP, as estimated by the Rietveld refinement, was in good agreement with the high-angle annular dark-field STEM observations and the simulations of the location of Ag atoms for [001] and [010] zone axes.

    Abstract Degradation of the mechanical properties of α-titanium, which is used to manufacture parts of jet engines, due to high-temperature oxidation is detrimental for the engine components. Therefore, to overcome this problem there are ongoing endeavors to develop novel oxidation-resistant titanium alloys and improve the properties of the existing ones. In an effort to understand the effect of alloying on oxidation of the α-Ti(0001) surface and to identify descriptors for rational design of oxidation-resistant alloys, in this work, using density functional theory-based calculations, we studied oxygen sorption and surface to subsurface diffusion on pure and alloyed α-Ti(0001) surfaces. Zr, Hf, Nb, and Mo from the d block and Al, Ga, Si, and Ge from the p block were used as alloying elements. We find that the alloying elements prefer to segregate on the surface compared to the subsurface layers. Our calculations show that the diffusion barrier correlates with the difference in the electronegativity between the alloying element and Ti. Elements which are more electropositive than Ti are found to hinder the oxygen dissolution in Ti and vice versa. We propose that the electronegativity difference can act as a good descriptor for choosing alloying elements. Our results are in reasonably good agreement with experimental reports on the growth of oxide layers on these alloyed Ti surfaces.

    Abstract Lymphoceles are an important complication of pelvic and abdominal surgery with a reported incidence of 11%-88%. Conventional treatment includes compression, puncture aspiration, sclerotherapy, and ligation but recurrence is not uncommon and is difficult to treat. Recently, microsurgical lymphaticolymphatic anastomosis, lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA) and reconstruction of lymphatic circulation with flaps are increasingly being utilized for lymphocele treatment. Effective microsurgical treatment requires precise identification of the causative afferent vessels for the most efficient circulatory by-pass. However, direct identification of these vessels using traditional lymphoscintigraphy and near infrared lymphography is challenging and often not possible. We report the case of a 55-year-old woman who presented with bilateral inguinal lymphoceles and lymphedema following pelvic surgery for vulvovaginal cancer. Bilateral multiple LVAs of the lower extremities were performed and the lower limb circumferences reduced postoperatively, however both lymphoceles still persisted. The patient was successfully treated by approaching the lymphoceles from inside the lymphocele cavity. The causative afferent lymph vessels were directly identified microsurgically by gentle pressure on the inner wall and causative afferent lymph vessel lymphaticovenular anastomosis was performed. The lymphoceles resolved promptly after surgery without complications, and no recurrence was observed on 5 years follow-up. This case report presents an innovative microsurgical approach to lymphocele treatment, including examination and techniques to identify the causative afferent lymphatic vessels for effective anastomosis. We report this case to demonstrate the importance of lymphatic vessel selection in the microsurgical treatment of lymphocele.
