Abstract Many diseases are associated with oxidative stress are caused by free radicals. Current research has been directed towards finding naturally occurring antioxidants of plant origin. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant activities of methanolic extract of Lawsonia inermis L. bark (MELIB). The present study was carried out for determination of qualitative, quantitative phytochemical and in vitro antioxidant activity for scavenging of free radical DPPH, superoxide radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation. The bark extract is a rich source of secondary metabolites like flavonoids at a rutin equivalent 73.43±0.26%, polyphenol at a gallic acid equivalent 84.70±0.43%, tannins at a tannic acid equivalent 88.75±0.14% and terpenoids at a linalool equivalent 68.13±0.31. MELIB showed free radicals scavenging capacity by way of the DPPH method (6.93±0.51 to 62.63±0.10% inhibition), the superoxide radical scavenging method (1.82±0.41 to 57.11±0.18% inhibition) and the ferric chloride induced lipid peroxidation method (9.87±0.33 to 80.32±0.82% inhibition). The results obtained in the present study indicate that MELIB can be a potential source of natural antioxidants due to the presence of flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins and terpenoids.

Abstract Traditional medicines, including Chinese herbal formulations, can serve as the source of potential new drugs, and initial research focuses on the isolation of bioactive lead compound(s). The development of novel plant-derived natural products and their analogs for anticancer activity details efforts to synthesize new derivatives based on bioactivity- and mechanism of action-directed isolation and characterization coupled with rational drug design - based modification. Also, the anticancer activity of certain natural products and their analogs can be enhanced by synthesizing new derivatives based on active pharmacophore models; drug resistance and solubility and metabolic limitations can be overcome by appropriate molecular modifications; and new biological properties or mechanisms of action can be added by combining other functional groups or molecules. Preclinical screening for in vitro human cell line panels and selected in vivo xenograft testing then identifies the most promising drug development targets.

Abstract The study of heavy metal contamination in plants, serve to indicate the metal concentration status of the site, where plants have grown. This is an important tool for phytoremediation. Proximate analysis in plants gives valuable information and help to access the quality of the sample. So studies were carried out on the roots of Anogeissus latifolia which is useful in UTI infections, skin diseases, liver complaints, fever, epileptic fits etc. for heavy metal contents and proximate analysis of the root sample was also done. The root showed the absence of heavy metals when it was subjected to analysis by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Spectrometer. The ash values, extractive values, moisture content, total solid content and crude fiber content of the root sample were also determined.

Abstract The present study was conducted to investigate anti-microbial activity of Ocimum sanctum methanolic extract against strains of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Tulsi plant is known to possess therapeutic potentials and have been used, by traditional medicinal practitioners, as an expectorant, analgesic, anticancer, antiasthmatic, antiemetic, diaphoretic, antidiabetic, antifertility, hepatoprotective, hypotensive, hypolipidmic, anti-microbial, antifungal activity against Asperigillus niger. The extract was tested for its antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria like Bacillus subtilis and Gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli. Inhibition of microbial growth was investigated using agar well diffusion method. UV-Visible and HPLC analysis of the extract was carried out for the presence of eugenol.
