    Abstract This book presents an overview of the hydrometeorological and hydrological studies and assists in tackling challenges posed by climate and land use land cover changes. The Ganga River is one of the major living streams on the planet earth and very important river system in India. This holy river is a lifeline for approximately five hundred million people. In the last few decades, River Ganges has been subjected to tremendous pressures with respect to both water quantity and water quality. This situation, already one of the alarming magnitudes, has been further provoked by hydrometeorological changes resulting in droughts, floods and reduced groundwater levels and river flows in addition to the poor river health. Thus, it is imperative to assess the various complexities and possible solutions for better management of River Ganges. This book is a valuable addition to the literature and contributes to research on River Ganges which will help better planning and management of Ganga river basin. The hydrological and hydrometeorological aspects covered in this book help practitioners, researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders.

    Abstract The growth of the metallic nanoparticles (NPs) on the solid substrate with the desired shape and size is a critical issue for application of these NPs in solid-state devices. Solid state dewetting (SSD) technique is simple, low cost and can be used to fabricate the metallic NPs with control on the shape and size on different substrates. In this work, silver NPs (Ag NPs) were grown on corning glass substrate by SSD of silver precursor thin film deposited at different substrate temperatures by RF sputtering. The influence of the substrate temperature on the growth of Ag NPs and their several properties like localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), photoluminescence (PL), and Raman spectroscopy is studied. The size of the NPs was found to vary from 25 nm to 70 nm with the variation in substrate temperature from room temperature (RT) to400∘C. For the RT films, the LSPR peak position of Ag NPs is around 474 nm. A red shift in LSPR peak for films deposited at higher temperature is observed due to change in the particle size and interparticle separation. Photoluminescence spectra suggests the presence of two photoluminescence bands at 436 and 474 nm corresponding to Ag NPs radiative interband transition and LSPR band.     Abstract Inflammation is an evolutionarily conserved process and part of the body's defense mechanism. Inflammation leads to the activation of immune and non-immune cells that protect the host tissue/organs from injury or intruding pathogens. The Hippo pathway is an evolutionarily conserved kinase cascade with an established role in regulating cell proliferation, survival, and differentiation. It is involved in diverse biological processes, including organ size control and tissue homeostasis. Recent clinical and pre-clinical studies have shown that the Hippo signaling pathway is also associated with injury- and pathogen-induced tissue inflammation and associated immunopathology. In this review, we have summarized the recent findings related to the involvement of the Hippo signaling pathway in modulating the immune response in different acute and chronic inflammatory diseases and its impact on tissue repair and remodeling.

    Abstract Fibrosis results from defective wound healing processes often seen after chronic injury and/or inflammation in a range of organs. Progressive fibrotic events may lead to permanent organ damage/failure. The hallmark of fibrosis is the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM), mostly produced by pathological myofibroblasts and myofibroblast-like cells. The Hippo signaling pathway is an evolutionarily conserved kinase cascade, which has been described well for its crucial role in cell proliferation, apoptosis, cell fate decisions, and stem cell self-renewal during development, homeostasis, and tissue regeneration. Recent investigations in clinical and pre-clinical models has shown that the Hippo signaling pathway is linked to the pathophysiology of fibrotic diseases in many organs including the lung, heart, liver, kidney, and skin. In this review, we have summarized recent evidences related to the contribution of the Hippo signaling pathway in the development of organ fibrosis. A better understanding of this pathway will guide us to dissect the pathophysiology of fibrotic disorders and develop effective tissue repair therapies.

    Abstract When electron-rich arylpyrrolinium salts are irradiated with ultraviolet light in the presence of Michael acceptors, the pyrrolinyl and aryl fragments add to the activated and polarized double bond in a regioselective manner, forming two C-C bonds and fragmenting the substrate. In this paper, we present a model for this intriguing reaction, supported by spectroscopy and computational analyses, and provide evidence for rectifying previously misassigned structures. We postulate that the photochemical reaction is inefficient because the reaction between the twisted intramolecular charge-transfer state and the olefin competes with fluorescence from this state upon photon absorption. We also discuss the practical advantages of performing this photochemical reaction in a continuous flow setup. Additionally, we explore several subsequent reactions that allow us to further modify the products of the photochemical step, ultimately leading to the creation of new chemical structures.

    Abstract Cell senescence suppresses tumors by arresting cells at risk of becoming malignant. However, this process in turn can affect the microenvironment, leading to acquisition of a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) that renders senescent cells proinflammatory and results in tumor progression. But how is SASP controlled? In this issue of the JCI, Attig and Pape et al. describe the role of chimeric calbindin 1 (CALB1) transcripts, which are driven by an upstream human endogenous retrovirus subfamily H (HERVH) element. The authors propose that in lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC), HERVH-driven isoforms of calbindin (HERVH-CALB1) counteract SASP. As an alternative promoter, HERVH drove calbindin isoforms that prevented cancer cell senescence and associated inflammation, which was associated with better patient survival. We comment on the similarities between HERVH-CALB1–related cellular fitness in cancer and early embryogenesis and discuss the potential benefits of HERVH-driven chimeric transcripts.
