Abstract Planting and consumption of maize are identity and determining activities in the evolution of population’s food heritage, since they contribute to food security and preservation of the biocultural heritage. Based on qualitative collection of information from producers and consumers of hand-made maize tortillas in San Pedro del Rosal, Atlacomulco, Estado de Mexico, an ethnographic study was conducted. From an anthropological perspective, the production of tortillas was characterized in order to analyze the know-how concerning this food, typical of central Mexico’s culinary identity. For tortilla producers, the know-how constitutes an identity heritage, as well as possibly a strategy for generating an income. In the case of consumers, it was concluded that they choose hand-made tortillas given their symbolic value.

Abstract BACKGROUND Organic soilless production in containers requires substrates with appropriate physicochemical and biological properties to ensure that production is sustainable and profitable for several production cycles. The main objective of this study was to comprehensively evaluate these properties in three different mixtures of organic substrates (vermicompost [V] and coconut fibers [CF ] in ratios 20V80CF , 40V60CF , 60V40CF ) for four horticultural crop production cycles (PC s) using vermicompost tea (VT ) as the main source of nutrients. RESULTS Readily available water (25%) in the control treatment (20V80CF ) was below the recommended limit, and dry bulk density (>450 g/L) surpassed the recommended limit in the 60V40CF treatment (p < 0.05). In terms of chemical properties, cations and anions in the saturated media extract decreased significantly to values below established optimal conditions. Furthermore, the substrates presented high enzymatic activity in successive production cycles (p < 0.05), including dehydrogenase (350–400 μg TFF g−1), acid phosphatase (4,700 μg p‐nitrophenol g−1 soil hr−1), and β‐glucosidase (1,200 μg p‐nitrophenol g−1 soil hr−1) activity during transformation from organic matter to inorganic compounds. CONCLUSION The 40V60CF treatment presents adequate physicochemical and biological characteristics for reuse for more than four growing cycles when organic supplements are administered.

Abstract Introduction: Anal cancer is a rare pathology which has increased over the last few decades, and, therefore, gained importance for the quality of life of affected individuals. Thus, a review has been conducted in the Colombian coffee region (Departments of Caldas, Quindío y Risaralda) describing its behaviour and clinical-epidemiological profile.
Materials and methods: Descriptive review of 437 patients of Western SAS Oncologists between January 2000 and December 2019 with a diagnosis of anal cancer.
Results: 62% of cases presented in women with a median age of 62 years, 30% in the sixth decade; centred at 65% in three main cities designated as capitals (Manizales, Pereira and Armenia); 62% as localised disease, with 40% stage II-A and 6% as initial metastasis; 29% presented positive ganglia, particularly N1a; squamous cell or epidermoid histology in 90%; 16% poorly differentiated; 5% related to Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection; localisation in the medial area of the anal canal in 63% of cases; 83% completed treatment, and 92% of them received chemotherapy/radiation therapy with 87% based on the Nigro protocol; finally, 11% presented with relapse in the liver in 10% of cases and 55% local.
Conclusion: Four hundred and thirty-seven patients evaluated over 20 years with follow up at median 34.13 months (standard deviation 41.75) with median survival at later ages decreasing to 62% in patients older than 80 years, and differences in survival in localised disease at 78% in comparison to 46% in advanced metastasis. Finally, the overall 5-year survival rate is 69% with a median survival of 191 months in the study.

Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of overweight and obesity on fertility outcomes in IVF procedures.
Methods: This was a retrospective and nonrandomized study that included 191 IVF/ICSI cycles using non-donor oocytes performed between July 2016 and December 2018 that were allocated according to Body Mass Index (BMI) in three groups: Normal group: 18.5-24.9 (n=67 women), Overweight group: 25.0-29.9 (n=86 women) and Obesity group: ≥30.0 (n=38 women). We compared fertilization rates, embryo quality at day 3, development and quality of blastocyst, pregnancy rates, implantation rates, and live birth rates.
Results: Patients from all groups had similar stimulation days, but those women with overweight and obesity used more hormones compared to women with normal weight (p<0.05). Fertilization rates, zygotes that underwent cleavage and good-quality embryos at Day 3 were similar between the three evaluated groups. The groups of overweight and obesity had embryos at Day 3 with significantly less cells, compared to those from the normal group (p<0.05). The blastocyst development rate was significantly lower in women with overweight and obesity compared to women with normal BMI (p<0.05); but, the percentages of good blastocysts were similar in all studied patients. Pregnancy, implantation and live birth rates were significantly lower in the group of women with overweight and obesity, compared to those women with normal weight (p<0.05). Obese women had significantly more miscarriages compared to those in the other groups (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Our data shows that an increased BMI affects embryo development and significantly reduces the pregnancy, implantation and live birth rates.

Abstract Depression and anxiety are common in patients experiencing acute coronary syndrome (ACS), occurring at significantly elevated rates. Together, these depressive symptoms and anxiety have a substantial negative impact on individuals with ACS. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression among patients with ACS. A systematic review and meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies were carried out. A comprehensive search of five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect) was performed until August 2, 2023. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute statistical meta-analysis review instrument. The collected data were entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and analyzed with the R program version 4.2.3. A total of 3103 articles were evaluated, and, after the evaluation process, eight studies were included, for a total sample of 1642 participants. The pooled prevalence of mild depression was 14% (95% CI: 06%-23%; I
