Abstract Over the past few years, there has been a notable increment in scientific literature aimed at unraveling the genetic foundations of vitamin D signaling and its implications for susceptibility to autoimmunity, however, most of them address isolated diseases. Here, we conducted a systematic review of genetic variants related to vitamin D and autoimmune diseases and we discussed the current landscape of susceptibility and outcomes. Of 65 studies analyzed, most variants cited are in vitamin D binding protein (

Abstract Visual odometry is the process of estimating the position and orientation of a camera by analyzing the images associated to it. This paper develops a quick and accurate approach to visual odometry of a moving RGB-D camera navigating on a static environment. The proposed algorithm uses SURF (Speeded Up Robust Features) as feature extractor, RANSAC (Random Sample Consensus) to filter the results and Minimum Mean Square to estimate the rigid transformation of six parameters between successive video frames. Data from a Kinect camera were used in the tests. The results show that this approach is feasible and promising, surpassing in performance the algorithms ICP (Interactive Closest Point) and SfM (Structure from Motion) in tests using a publicly available dataset.

Abstract Purpose: The goal of this paper is to describe the green conversion of agricultural waste products, such as molasses and corn steep liquor, into large amounts of D(-) lactic acid using a facilitated multipulse fed-batch strategy and affordable pH neutralizer. This is a very low-cost process because there is no need for hydrolysis of the waste products. The fed-batch strategy increases lactic acid productivity by avoiding inhibition caused by a high initial substrate concentration, and the selected controlling agent prevents cell stress that could be caused by high osmotic pressure of the culture media.
Methods: The effects of different carbon and nitrogen sources on lactic acid production were investigated, and the best concentrations of the medium components were determined. To optimize the culture conditions of the
Result: A high titer of D(-) lactic acid (162g/liter) was achieved after 48 hours of fermentation. Productivity at this point was 3.37 g/L·h. The optimum conditions were a temperature of 39°C, pH 5.5 controlled by the addition of Ca(OH)
Conclusion: The production of high optical purity D(-) lactic acid through

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the relative bioavailability (RB) of manganese (Mn) proteinate compared to Mn sulfate for broilers fed a diet based on corn and soybean meal for 20 d. The diets of 1,350 male Cobb broilers were supplemented with 0, 35, 70, 105, or 140 mg of Mn/kg of feed in the form of Mn sulfate or Mn proteinate. Weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion, bone strength, and Mn concentration in the tibia and liver, as well as the concentration of type I collagen in the tibia, were evaluated. No differences were observed for performance variables (P > 0.05) or for type I collage concentration in broiler tibia (P > 0.05), regardless of the source and level of supplementation used. Relative bioavailability was determined using bone strength values and Mn concentration in the tibia and liver, assuming Mn sulfate as the standard source (100%) by the slope-ratio method. The RB of Mn proteinate based on bone strength was 111%, based on liver Mn concentration was 128%, and based on tibia Mn concentration was 105%. Manganese proteinate was more bioavailable than Mn sulfate; it can be an important source of supplementation to improve bone quality in broilers.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the relationship between vitamin D status and hypertriglyceridemic-waist (HTW) phenotype and cardiometabolic markers in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) living in regions with high solar incidence (10° south).
Methods: An observational, cross-sectional study, with 122 individuals with T2DM, of both sexes, aged between 19 and 59 years, residing in Sergipe/Brazil. Measurements included serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D), glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, LDL-c, HDL-c, triacylglycerols, blood pressure, body mass index, %body fat, and waist circumference. Participants were classified by the presence or absence of the HTW phenotype, according to increased waist circumference and triacylglycerols concentrations. Logistic and linear regression models were applied to verify the association among the concentration of 25(OH)D, HTW phenotype, and lipid profile variables.
Results: Triacylglycerols concentrations (p = .013) and %body fat (p = .011) were higher in women with serum 25(OH)D insufficient/deficient than in those with adequate 25(OH)D levels. Individuals with serum 25(OH)D insufficiency/deficiency were 2.595 times more likely to present the HTW phenotype than those with adequate 25(OH)D levels (p = .021). Additionally, a negative association was observed between the concentration of 25(OH)D and total cholesterol (Beta = -0.204, p = .049).
Conclusion: Insufficiency/deficiency of serum 25(OH)D in individuals with T2DM increases the chances of developing the HTW phenotype.

Abstract Background: Cathepsin D (CatD) is a lysosomal proteolytic enzyme expressed in almost all tissues and organs. This protease is a multifunctional enzyme responsible for essential biological processes such as cell cycle regulation, differentiation, migration, tissue remodeling, neuronal growth, ovulation, and apoptosis. The overexpression and hypersecretion of CatD have been correlated with cancer aggressiveness and tumor progression, stimulating cancer cell proliferation, fibroblast growth, and angiogenesis. In addition, some studies report its participation in neurodegenerative diseases and inflammatory processes. In this regard, the search for new inhibitors from natural products could be an alternative against the harmful effects of this enzyme.
Methods: An investigation was carried out to analyze CatD interaction with snake venom toxins in an attempt to find inhibitory molecules. Interestingly, human CatD shows the ability to bind strongly to snake venom phospholipases A
Conclusion: The present study suggests the versatility of human CatD and svPLA

Abstract Vitamin D deficiency affects nearly one-sixth of the world's population and is common in patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery. Vitamin D is critical for calcium homeostasis and plays an important role in the maintenance of bone health. Patients undergoing foot and ankle procedures can be evaluated preoperatively with vitamin D level testing, and deficiencies can be addressed with either preoperative or postoperative supplementation. Current data suggest that patients with adequate vitamin D levels may have better outcomes, but the details are not yet clear. Vitamin D supplementation is well tolerated with rare side effects.

Abstract To determine the effects of administration of 25 mg of PGF2α 7 d prior to the initiation of the 7-d CO-Synch + controlled internal drug release (CIDR) fixed-time AI (TAI) protocol, 985 Bos taurus beef heifers were enrolled in a completely randomized design at 9 locations from April to July of 2016. Within location, all heifers were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: 1) CONTROL (n = 496); 100 µg injection of GnRH and a CIDR insert for 7 d [day 7], administration of 25 mg of PGF2α at CIDR removal [day 0], followed by a second injection of GnRH and TAI 54 ± 2 h later; or 2) PRESYNCH (n = 489); same as CONTROL but heifers received an additional injection of 25 mg of PGF2α 7 d prior [day 14] to CIDR insertion. Estrous detection patches were applied to all heifers on day 14 and were evaluated for estrual activity on day 7. Similarly, estrus alert patches were placed on all heifers on day 0 and evaluated for estrual activity at the time of TAI. Pregnancy was diagnosed via transrectal ultrasonography between 35 and 55 d after TAI. The percentage of heifers exhibiting estrus between days 14 and 7 was greater (P < 0.001) for the PRESYNCH (70.1 ± 2.4%) than the CONTROL (41.1 ± 2.3%) treatment, whereas the percentage of heifers exhibiting estrus between day 0 and TAI was greater (P < 0.001) for the CONTROL (55.6 ± 2.4%) than the PRESYNCH (39.7 ± 2.5%) treatment. Estrus response rates differed (P < 0.001) among locations. Pregnancy rates to TAI differed (P = 0.023) among locations; however, they did not differ (P = 0.739) between CONTROL and PRESYNCH treatments (45.4 ± 2.5 vs. 43.2 ± 2.5%, respectively). Final breeding season pregnancy rates did not differ (P = 0.811) between treatments. Therefore, an injection of PGF2α 7 d prior to initiation of the 7-d CO-Synch + CIDR protocol failed to improve pregnancy rates to TAI in replacement beef heifers.

Abstract Herbicides are agrochemicals applied in the control of weeds. With the frequent and repetitive use of these substances, serious problems have been reported. Compounds of natural origin and their derivatives are attractive options to obtain new compounds with herbicidal properties. By aiming to develop compounds with potentiated herbicidal activity, phenoxyacetic acids were synthesized from eugenol and guaiacol. The synthesized compounds were characterized and the herbicidal potential of phenoxyacetic acids and precursors was evaluated through bioassays regarding the germination and initial development of Lactuca sativa and Sorghum bicolor seedlings, with the induction of DNA damage. The induction of changes in the mitotic cycle of meristematic cells of roots of L. sativa was also analyzed. At the concentration of 3 mmol L-1, phenols and their respective phenoxyacetic acids presented phytotoxic and cytotoxic activities in L. sativa and S. bicolor. Eugenol and guaiacol also presented genotoxic action in L. sativa. The toxic effect of eugenoxyacetic acid was more pronounced in L. sativa than in S. bicolor, similar to the commercial 2,4-D herbicide. Molecular properties of the phenols and their derivatives phenoxyacetic acids were compared with the ones obtained for the herbicide 2,4-D, where it was found a correlation between their molecular properties and bioactivity.
