Abstract Xuan paper with outstanding cultural and artistic values is one of the most precious Chinese handmade papers and is widely used in traditional calligraphy and painting. However, the highly combustible cellulosic raw materials of Xuan paper present potential fire hazards. Ammonium phytate (AP) originating from biosourced phytic acid has been used for the flame-retardant treatment of Chinese Xuan paper by facile spray coating. The limiting oxygen index value of the treated Xuan paper increased to higher than 40%, demonstrating that the flammability of Xuan paper was greatly reduced by this treatment. The excellent flame retardancy afforded by this treatment was confirmed by cone calorimetry. TGA was used to demonstrate that the presence of AP changed the thermal decomposition process to promote char formation during the degradation of Xuan paper. The flame-retardant mode of action of phytate-coated Xuan paper was investigated using TG-FTIR, SEM, and XPS spectra. A P-N cooperative effect was proposed to account for both the condensed phase and gas-phase flame-retardant actions. The phosphorus component promotes char formation in the condensed phase, while the nitrogen component releases inert species to dilute the fuel load in the gas phase. The ink-wetting property of the coated Xuan paper was influenced negligibly by the coating process. The development of fire-resistant Xuan paper using ecofriendly flame retardants through simple and convenient spray coating has been demonstrated.

Abstract Invaluable paper relics that embody a rich traditional culture have suffered damage, requiring urgent restoration. In this context, the utilization of soymilk as a sizing agent holds great significance and reverence. This study investigates the use of soymilk as a sizing agent for Xuan paper and evaluates its effects on various properties and the long-term behavior of the paper. The findings reveal that the application of soymilk as a sizing agent for Xuan paper imparts distinct properties, including hydrophobicity, improved mechanical properties, and unique chromaticity. These characteristics-arising from the papillae on the surface of the Xuan paper, the protein folding of the soy protein, and hydrogen-bonding interactions between the soy protein and paper fibers-play a crucial role in shaping the paper's unique attributes. From a physicochemical perspective, the aging process leads to multiple changes in paper properties. These changes include acidification, which refers to a decrease in pH, as well as a decline in mechanical strength, an increase in chromaticity, and a decrease in the degree of polymerization (DP) of the paper. The Ekenstam equation is employed to predict the lifespan of the paper, showing longer lifespans for Sheng Xuan paper and a negative correlation between soymilk concentration and lifespan in soymilk-sized paper. Our work provides valuable insights for the preservation and maintenance of paper, highlighting the potential benefits and challenges of using soymilk for surface sizing.

Abstract The aim of research is to unveil the mechanisms of the beneficial effects of XYD on PCIV in a rabbit model. 40 New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into 5 groups, including normal control group (NC), model control group (MC), low-dose of XYD group (LXYD), high-dose of XYD group (HXYD) and Yang-Xue-Qin-Nao group (YXQN). PCIV rabbit model was established by feeding high-fat diet companied with paravertebral sclerotherapy and rotation exercise. The general observation, step-down test, rheoencephalogram, blood tests, histopathological detection and the plasma concentration of the effective component of XYD were investigated. After pharmacological intervening, the step-down time, REG, PL, IPL, blood viscosity, the levels of blood lipids, CRGP were significantly improved. Moreover, the vertebral artery showed the reduced stenosis of arterial lumen and less proliferation of fibrous tissue in the arterial wall in the LXYD, HXYD and YXQN group. Based on the LC-MS detection, the blood concentrations of puerarin in the LXYD and HXYD group were significantly increased after pharmacological intervening. XYD could ameliorate the symptoms of vertigo, Qi-deficiency and blood stasis in PCIV rabbits via effectively regulating the levels of blood lipids and vasoactive substances, decreasing blood viscosity, increasing CBF and protecting vestibular function.

Abstract Xuan paper is outstanding representative of the precious Chinese handmade papers which is popular with traditional calligraphy and painting. However, the highly flammability of Xuan paper results in the latent fire risk. In this research, fire-resistant and antibacterial Chinese Xuan papers were prepared by fully bio-based chitosan (CS)/phytic acid (PA) intumescent flame retardant system. Xuan paper achieved the excellent flame retardancy with limit oxygen index value of 36.4% when it was coated with 20 BL CS/PA on pulp fibers. The vertical flame properties and cone calorimetry test of Xuan papers also revealed their flame retardancy were greatly improved. The tensile strength of Xuna paper was slightly influenced by CS/PA coating. The CS/PA coating on Xuan papers could greatly enhance their antibacterial properties. The flame retardant mechanism of coated Xuan papers was investigated. The results showed the CS/PA coating on pulp fibers could act through intumescent flame retardant action. The ink wetting property of Xuan paper won't be influenced by CS/PA coating on the pulp fibers. This research provides research basis for fire-resistant and antibacterial Xuan papers by using the fully bio-based chitosan/phytic acid coating on pulp fibers.

Abstract Nacre-mimetic materials possess excellent thermostability and barrier performance which provide novel idea for high efficient flame retardant strategy. In this study, we propose an eco-friendly approach to fabricate fire-resistant cellulosic Chinese Xuan paper by layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly chitosan (CH) and montmorillonite (MMT). The flame retardancy of Xuan paper was greatly improved after the LBL assembly coated CH/MMT, it achieved excellent flame retardancy when the CH/MMT bilayer was over 10 BL with the LOI value higher than of 35 %. The results of thermal stability of treated Xuan paper revealed the nacre-mimetic CH/MMT nanocoating on Xuan paper would promote the formation of compact and dense char which will be beneficial to inhibit the heat transmission and combustible gas diffusion. The ink wetting performance was also investigated in this study. This research would provide experimental basis for the development of fire-resisting paper using bio-mimetic method to construct nacre-mimetic organic/inorganic hybrid flame retardant system.

Abstract Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease without effective clinical drug treatment. Qing-Xuan Granule (QX) as a traditional Chinese patent medicine is clinically used to cure children's cough. This study was designed to investigate the effects of QX and possible molecular mechanisms for bleomycin-induced PF. The work used Western blotting and Q-PCR to explore the vitro and vivo mechanisms of QX treatment, while using HPLC-TOF/MS to explore the composition of QX. QX was given daily orally for two weeks after bleomycin intratracheal instillation. The protective effects of QX on lung function, inflammation, growth factors, hydroxyproline content and deposition of extracellular matrix were investigated. QX decreased expression of Col I and α-SMA in lung tissues by down-regulating TGF-β1-Smad2/3 signaling and suppressed epithelial-mesenchymal transition and effectively reversed abnormal mRNA levels of MMP-1and TIMP-1 as well as LOXL-2 in lung tissues. HPLC-TOF/MS indicate that six substances could be the main active components, which were reported to protect against experimental lung disease.
