Abstract Objective: To study the level of physical activity of Pakistani labourers in Saudi Arabia, and to find its relationship with body mass index.
Methods: The observational study was conducted inside the Pakistan Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from October 2017 to March 2018, and comprised Pakistani males aged 22-60 years doing unskilled and semi-skilled jobs. Body mass index was calculated, and the level of physical activity was assessed using the short form of International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Data was analysed using SPSS 20.
Results: There were 130 subjects with mean age of 33.53±7.9 years. There were 109(83.8%) subjects aged <40 years, and 21(16.2%) were aged >40 years. Mean body mass index of the sample was 26.13±5.29kg/m². Overall, 71(54.6%) participants were insufficiently active having energy expenditure <600 metabolic equivalent of task in minutes per week. No statistically significant result was found when total energy expenditure was considered (p>0.05), but significant result was found for energy expenditure due to 'walk alone' (p<0.05). Significant correlation was found between profession and overall energy expenditure and job-related energy expenditure. Significant but weak positive correlation was found between body mass index and walk-related energy expenditure (r=0.279), (p<0.001).
Conclusions: Mean body mass index of the sample was high compared to South Asian cut-off values, and the level of physical activity was very low, but the findings failed to show an inverse relationship between physical activity level and body mass index.

Abstract For many years, the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) had involved exfoliating graphite flakes, and the methods applied were expensive and time-consuming. Thus, an attempt had been made to create an inventive, less expensive method for the synthesis of GO using unrefined, raw carbon-containing material. Modified Hummer's method was used to prepare GO from banana peel. In addition, the metallic silver nanocomposite was also synthesized along with laoding of drug Rocephin where they interact with each other through electrostatic hydrogen bond interaction. The degree of crystallinity and the crystallite size were through x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and the crystallite size of AgNPs was found to be 40.40 nm. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that the morphology of the GO gradually changes with the addition of AgNPs and Rocephin. A blue shift was seen in the absorbance maxima of the raw carbon upon the conjugation of Rocephin in UV analysis. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy were used to determine the chemical composition of the samples. Furthermore, a broad biological screening of the synthesized samples had been carried out following the total reducing power (TRP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), antibacterial, antifungal, MTT (Cytotoxicity of biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles in MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells) cell viability, brine shrimp lethality, and hemolytic protocols. Significant results were obtained, and the Rocephin-GO-AgNPs had depicted promising activity as compared with their counterparts. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The GO was prepared from the raw carbon extracted from banana peels and was used as a substrate for the synthesis Graphene oxide silver nanoparticles (GO-AgNPs) and Rocephin-loaded graphene oxide silver nanoparticles (Rocephin-GO-AgNPs) The structural and compositional analysis of the nanomaterial was carried out, and they were screened for several biomedical applications. The Rocephin-GO-AgNPs exhibit the highest activity as compared with their counterparts.

Abstract This study aims to identify the underlying causes of variation in the time series and cross-sectional equity style returns in the emerging stock market of Pakistan. We use asset pricing models and incorporate variables reflecting business cycle fluctuations to assess the time-varying size and value premiums. The methodology of this paper involves constructing style portfolios based on firm-specific characteristics such as market capitalization, price to earnings ratio, book-to-market equity ratio, momentum, and asset growth. We find that the style portfolios earn abnormal returns consistently which cannot be explained either through asset pricing models or business cycles variables. However, the size and value premiums are found to be subsided during the troughs of economic cycles. The results suggest that the abnormal returns for style portfolios are likely driven by firm-specific characteristics rather than macroeconomic factors. Overall, this study contributes to the literature on style investing by providing insights into the profitability of equity style portfolios in the Pakistani equity market. Our findings have implications for stock picking, investment management and risk factor analysis.

Abstract The technology of modern power systems is revolutionizing as renewable energy sources are being integrated with electric power grids. In the form of inverters, power electronic converters are becoming an integral part of power systems due to their massive demand for grid integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems. Existing multilevel inverter topologies either require an output filter to get a sinusoidal voltage or generate a higher number of output voltage levels at the expense of many hardware resources. This paper presents a new single-phase 81-level inverter configuration with the name given as 'Modified W-Type Multilevel Inverter'. The proposed inverter configuration uses only eighteen power switches and four DC voltage sources to generate an 81-level output voltage approaching a sinusoidal waveform without an output filter. The general design equations are developed to calculate the number of switches, the number of voltage levels, and the number of DC sources for the proposed configuration. Loss and efficiency analysis is carried out that verifies a good practical efficiency of the proposed inverter configuration during the dynamic operation. A comparative analysis with the existing MLI topologies is also carried out that validates the effectiveness and novelty in reducing parts count and higher number of voltage levels. The proposed topology offers 1.04% total harmonic distortion of the output voltage which is within the benchmarks specified for grid integration without any filter requirements. The proposed inverter configuration is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink, and the results are validated by the design and development of a hardware prototype.

Abstract Veterinary drugs used in animal husbandry raise public health concerns due to their residues in the bodies of animals. This study employs a simple and quick sample preparation technique, in-tube solid phase extraction, to extract drug residues from foodstuffs, including eggs, honey, and water. This technique utilizes the synergy of graphitic-based materials and polyurethane sponges (PU) combined through dip coating method to make reusable sorbents for extracting drugs, including amoxicillin, paracetamol, ciprofloxacin, and cefixime. These prepared sorbents were characterized using FTIR, SEM, and XRD. HPLC analysis assessed the extraction efficiency, considering various parameters such as analyte concentration, sample solution pH, extraction time, type of eluting solvent, and graphitic-based polyurethane sponge reusability and stability. The proposed method exhibited a linear response for all three sorbents in the range of 0.03-1000 µg mL

Abstract To increase medical students' and residents' understanding and retention, faculty need to teach from a knowledge standpoint and understanding of how individuals learn. We know from cognitive information processing that learners remember only a small portion of what they read or hear but remember up to 90% of information when strong active learning modalities are included. Faculty also need to be aware of different learning styles-kinesthetic, visual, and auditory-and ensure that they are including methods that can reach all learners. The cognitive and information processing theories of learning provide insights to educators related to building on prior knowledge from learning and limiting the number of points taught so learners can process and retain the information. Strategies such as a flipped classroom model and question clicker technology can assist in reaching learning goals. Fundamental conditions for learning include awareness, interest, motivation, relevance, engagement, reinforcement, and support.

Abstract OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence of acute acalculous cholecystitis in patients with dengue fever and assess its association with laboratory parameters. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Creek General Hospital, United Medical and Dental College, Karachi, Pakistan, from September 2020 to October 2021. Patients were included in the study through consecutive sampling. After their informed consent, all adult patients diagnosed with dengue fever, based on serological tests, were included in this study. Exclusion criteria were co-existing cholelithiasis, chronic liver disease, hemolytic and rheumatological disorders, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, chronic kidney disease, use of oral contraceptive pills, pregnant females, enteric fever, vasculitis and recent surgery or trauma. The ultrasonographic features of these patients were recorded along with other laboratory investigations. SPSS ver 23.0 was used to analyze the data. Student t-tests and Chi-square tests were used to assess the association between the variables, and a P-value of <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: 248 patients with dengue fever were included in this study. More than 49% of these patients were diagnosed to have acalculous cholecystitis. Development of this condition was significantly associated with hemoconcentration, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia and transaminitis. All the patients recovered with conservative management, but the duration of hospital stay for these patients was considerably higher than in those without this condition. CONCLUSION: Almost half of the patients diagnosed with Dengue fever developed acalculous cholecystitis. These patients recovered with conservative management.
