    Abstract To determine the coral reef morpho-functional structure of San Andrés, regarding functional benthic diversity and fish (Lutjanidae), we evaluated the condition of the coral structure on the leeward side of the island, which is an area impacted by tourism, through diving and fishing. Three sampling sites were evaluated during two years recording the distribution of benthic organisms, environmental variables and Snappers density (Lutjanidae). A low density of Lutjanus jocu and Ocyurus chrysurus was found, with a high density of juveniles of L. apodus and L. mahogoni, which showed a preference for reefs with submassive and brain corals. Algae especially Macroalgae and octocorals were those with the greatest coverage in the reefs, followed by inert substrates, while corals were epresented by species with a wide distribution such as Agaricia agaricites and Porites astreoides. Octocorals correlated negatively with stony corals and that the most widespread fragile corals were the finger. We concluded that there is a higher density of mainly juvenile snappers where there is a greater variety of coral morpho-functional groups, and not necessarily in sites with greater coral coverage. Also, adult snappers were associated with octocoral zones. This shows that morpho-functional diversity is a crucial factor in the permanence of snappers.

    Abstract Despite extensive research, the fundamental physical mechanisms underlying the Mpemba effect, a phenomenon where a substance cools faster after initially being heated, remain elusive. Although historically linked with water, the Mpemba effect manifests across diverse systems, sparking heightened interest in Mpemba-like phenomena. Concurrently, the Kovacs effect, a memory phenomenon observed in materials like polymers, involves rapid quenching and subsequent temperature changes, resulting in nonmonotonic relaxation behavior. This paper probes the intricacies of the Mpemba and Kovacs effects within the framework of the time-delayed Newton's law of cooling, recognized as a simplistic yet effective phenomenological model accommodating memory phenomena. This law allows for a nuanced comprehension of temperature variations, introducing a time delay ($\tau$) and incorporating specific protocols for the thermal bath temperature, contingent on a defined waiting time ($t_{\text{w}}$). Remarkably, the relevant parameter space is two-dimensional ($\tau$ and $t_{\text{w}}$), with bath temperatures exerting no influence on the presence or absence of the Mpemba effect or the relative strength of the Kovacs effect. The findings enhance our understanding of these memory phenomena, providing valuable insights applicable to researchers across diverse fields, ranging from physics to materials science.

    Abstract The importance of roughness in the modeling of granular gases has been increasingly considered in recent years. In this paper, a freely evolving homogeneous granular gas of inelastic and rough hard disks or spheres is studied under the assumptions of the Boltzmann kinetic equation. The homogeneous cooling state is studied from a theoretical point of view using a Sonine approximation, in contrast to a previous Maxwellian approach. A general theoretical description is done in terms of d_{t} translational and d_{r} rotational degrees of freedom, which accounts for the cases of spheres (d_{t}=d_{r}=3) and disks (d_{t}=2, d_{r}=1) within a unified framework. The non-Gaussianities of the velocity distribution function of this state are determined by means of the first nontrivial cumulants and by the derivation of non-Maxwellian high-velocity tails. The results are validated by computer simulations using direct simulation Monte Carlo and event-driven molecular dynamics algorithms.

    Abstract The structural properties of confined single-file hard-disk fluids are studied analytically by means of a mapping of the original system onto a one-dimensional mixture of non-additive hard rods, the mapping being exact in the polydisperse limit. Standard statistical-mechanical results are used as a starting point to derive thermodynamic and structural properties of the one-dimensional mixture, where the condition that all particles have the same chemical potential must be taken into account. Analytical results are then provided for the nth neighbor probability distribution function, the radial distribution function, and the structure factor, a very good agreement being observed upon comparison with simulation data from the literature. Moreover, we have analyzed the scaling form for the disappearance of defects in the zigzag configuration for high pressure and have obtained the translational correlation length and the structural crossover in the oscillation frequency for asymptotically large distances.

    Abstract The exact transfer-matrix solution for the longitudinal equilibrium properties of the single-file hard-disk fluid is used to study the limiting low- and high-pressure behaviors analytically as functions of the pore width. In the low-pressure regime, the exact third and fourth virial coefficients are obtained, which involve single and double integrals, respectively. Moreover, we show that the standard irreducible diagrams do not provide a complete account of the virial coefficients in confined geometries. The asymptotic equation of state in the high-pressure limit is seen to present a simple pole at the close-packing linear density, as in the hard-rod fluid, but, in contrast to the latter case, the residue is 2. Since, for an arbitrary pressure, the exact transfer-matrix treatment requires the numerical solution of an eigenvalue integral equation, we propose here two simple approximations to the equation of state, with different complexity levels, and carry out an extensive assessment of their validity and practical convenience vs the exact solution and available computer simulations.

    Abstract Previous research has shown that woman-headed households, more than man-headed ones, experience food insecurity. The purpose of this article is to contribute on the determinants that are linked to this gender disparity. Using a nationally representative dataset from Chile, we found that food security household head gender disparity is associated with marital status (having or not a partner) and household composition (having children or seniors). In contrast, gender disparity is not strongly associated with household income and household head educational differences. In this way, we expect to bring evidence to inform new alternatives that help mitigate food security gender disparity.

    Abstract Evolutionary tempo and mode summarize ancient and controversial subjects of theoretical biology such as gradualism, convergence, contingence, trends, and entrenchment. We employed an integrative methodological approach to explore the evolutionary tempo and mode of Lepidosaurian phalangeal formulae (PFs). This approach involves quantifying the frequencies of morphological changes along an evolutionary trajectory. The five meristic characters encoded by PFs are particularly valuable in revealing evolutionary patterns, owing to their discrete nature and extensive documentation in the literature. Based on a pre-existing dataset of PFs from 649 taxa (35 Lepidosauria families, including fossils), from which there exists a unique repertoire of 53 formulations, our approach simultaneously considers phenetic and phylogenetic data. This culminates in a diagram accounting for the phylogenetic dynamic of evolution traversing across different regions of morphospace. The method involves enumerating phenotypical options, reconstructing phenotypes across the phylogeny, projecting phenotypes onto a morphospace, and constructing a flow network from the frequency of evolutionary transitions between unique phenotypic conditions. This approach links Markovian chains and evolutionary trajectories to formally define parameters that describe the underlying transitions of morphological change. Among other results, we found that (a) PF evolution exhibits a clear trend towards reduction in the phalangeal count and that (b) evolutionary change tends to occur significantly between morphologically similar PFs. Notwithstanding, although minor but not trivial, transitions between distant formulas -jumps- occur. Our results support a pluralistic view including stasis, gradualism, and saltationism discriminating their prevalence in a target character evolution.
