Abstract The success of a pediatric kidney transplantation program can only be judged by reviewing its results. We aim to audit our short-term outcome of pediatric kidney transplantation at the King Fahad Specialist Hospital-Dammam. A retrospective chart review was performed to collect data about recipient demographics, etiology of end-stage kidney disease, type of dialysis, type of donor and outcome. Between September 2008 and April 2012, 35 pediatric kidney trans-plantations (<16 year) were performed of a total of 246 kidney transplants (14.2%). The mean age was 8.1 years, with a mean weight of 23.3 kg, and there were 21 (60%) boys in the study. Kidney dysplasia/hypoplasia was the most common etiology (51.4%). Preemptive kidney transplantation was performed in six (17%) patients. Peritoneal dialysis was the most common mode of dialysis [24 (69%) children]. Living donation was the source of kidney allografts in 13 (37%) cases. During a mean follow-up of 1.5 years, one patient died and one graft was lost due to kidney vein thrombosis. The one year patient and graft survival rates were 97% and 94%, respectively. Efforts should now be focused on achieving optimal long-term results. There is also a need to encourage preemptive transplantation and living donation in this population.

Abstract: ... and gastric diseases among the Saudi population. This retrospective study was conducted at King Fahad ...

Abstract Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a common and significant public health problem. About 70-90% of the population in developing countries and 25-50% in developed countries were infected with H. pylori. Many studies have been undertaken concerning the role of H. pylori in the etiopathogenesis of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer, as well as its role in the development of stomach malignancies. The objective of the present study was to find out the correlation between helicobacter pylori and gastric diseases among the Saudi population. This retrospective study was conducted at King Fahad Hospital at Al-Baha of Saudi Arabia between 1st January and 31st December 2004. Patients presented with gastrointestinal symptoms attending at hospital were included in the study. Gastric biopsy specimens were obtained from 187 patients with different type of gastroduodenal diseases. Histopathological study of gastric biopsy was carried out in the laboratory of the same hospital. Grades of H. pylori density in specimens in the present study was classified according to Sydney classification. Total 187 patients were included in the present study. There age range was 06-98 years and 108 were male and 79 were female. Maximum 30.5% patients were belonged to above 60 years age group. Out of all respondents maximum 86.6% patients had gastritis followed by 6.4% had normal histopathological finding, 3.7% had non specific findings and 3.2% had malignancy. Positive correlation was observed between severity of gastritis and grading of H. pylori load. (r=+0.382; p value <0.001). The findings of the present study reveal that H. Pylori is responsible for many gastric diseases. It was also concluded from the study that severity of gastritis associated with H. Pylori increases with the heavy load of infection. To confirm the association prospective study with large sample size is recommended.

Abstract Lung cancer remains a formidable challenge in oncology, necessitating the develop-ment of more effective prognostic and diagnostic techniques due to inefficient conventional therapeutic approaches and inadequate methods for early lung cancer diagnosis. Despite im-mense progress in the development of innovative strategies to alleviate the impact of this devas-tating disease, the outcomes, unfortunately, remain unsatisfactory, particularly in targeted drug delivery methods. Consequently, nanotechnology has emerged as a revolutionary force in cancer research to develop more effective targeted drug delivery tools due to its extraordinary capacity at the atomic and molecular levels. It has appeared as a beacon of hope in this area of unmet need, providing innovative ways for the prognosis and diagnosis of lung carcinoma. Therefore, this comprehensive review delves into the evolving field of nano-based therapeutics, shedding light on their potential to transform lung cancer treatment. This study meticulously explores the most promising nano-based strategies that have been extensively linked with the treatment of lung carcinoma and mainly emphasizes targeted drug delivery methods and therapies. Addition-ally, this review encapsulates the favorable results of clinical trials, which support the potential pathways for further development of nanotherapeutics in lung cancer management.

Abstract Mutations in genes can alter their DNA patterns, and by recognizing these mutations, many carcinomas can be diagnosed in the progression stages. The human body contains many hidden and enigmatic features that humankind has not yet fully understood. A total of 7539 neoplasm cases were reported from 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2021. Of these, 3156 were seen in males (41.9%) and 4383 (58.1%) in female patients. Several machine learning and deep learning frameworks are already implemented to detect mutations, but these techniques lack generalized datasets and need to be optimized for better results. Deep learning-based neural networks provide the computational power to calculate the complex structures of gastric carcinoma-driven gene mutations. This study proposes deep learning approaches such as long and short-term memory, gated recurrent units and bi-LSTM to help in identifying the progression of gastric carcinoma in an optimized manner. This study includes 61 carcinogenic driver genes whose mutations can cause gastric cancer. The mutation information was downloaded from intOGen.org and normal gene sequences were downloaded from asia.ensembl.org, as explained in the data collection section. The proposed deep learning models are validated using the self-consistency test (SCT), 10-fold cross-validation test (FCVT), and independent set test (IST); the IST prediction metrics of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, MCC and AUC of LSTM, Bi-LSTM, and GRU are 97.18%, 98.35%, 96.01%, 0.94, 0.98; 99.46%, 98.93%, 100%, 0.989, 1.00; 99.46%, 98.93%, 100%, 0.989 and 1.00, respectively.

Abstract Gut microbiota is regarded as a crucial regulator of the immune system. Healthy gut microbiota plays a specialized role in host xenobiotics, nutrition, drug metabolism, regulation of the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, defense against infections, and immunomodulation. It is now understood that any imbalance in gut microbiota composition from that present in a healthy state is linked to genetic susceptibility to a number of metabolic disorders, including diabetes, autoimmunity, and cancer. Recent research has suggested that immunotherapy can treat many different cancer types with fewer side effects and better ability to eradicate tumors than conventional chemotherapy or radiotherapy. However, a significant number of patients eventually develop immunotherapy resistance. A strong correlation was observed between the composition of the gut microbiome and the effectiveness of treatment by examining the variations between populations that responded to immunotherapy and those that did not. Therefore, we suggest that modulating the microbiome could be a potential adjuvant therapy for cancer immunotherapy and that the architecture of the gut microbiota may be helpful in explaining the variation in treatment response. Herein, we focus on recent research on the interactions among the gut microbiome, host immunity, and cancer immunotherapy. In addition, we highlighted the clinical manifestations, future opportunities, and limitations of microbiome manipulation in cancer immunotherapy.
