Abstract Background: In Ecuador, the number of adults on hemodialysis (HD) continues to rise. Currently, the effect dietary habits and socioeconomic status (SES) have on blood pressure is not known for those on HD.
Objectives: The objectives of this study focused on adults on HD in Quito, Ecuador to
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the dialysis center within Eugenio Espejo Specialties Hospital in Quito, Ecuador between May and June 2022 among 50 adults on HD. Three 24-h recalls were used to determine average dietary intake and the 25-item Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos-Stratification of SES was used to determine SES. Electrolytes and 2 blood pressure readings were collected. Qualitative narrative data analysis was performed to identify themes using NVivo v12. T-tests of independence, simple, and multiple linear regressions using age and sex as confounders were conducted using R and a
Results: On an average, 76% of participants consumed <25 kcal/kg body weight energy and 64% consumed <1 g protein/kg body weight. Participants consumed less energy and protein compared with the KDOQI guidelines (
Conclusions: Findings from this study indicate that the focus should be on improving energy and protein intake for this population.

Abstract Clinical Background: Although chronic kidney disease (CKD) and smoking are both associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, the interplay between the two is not widely understood. Epidemiology: The incidence of CKD progression has been shown to be significantly higher among current and former smokers, and continued smoking thereafter has been associated with a nearly twofold higher risk of death. Challenges: Because it is a silent disease, CKD is often diagnosed in advanced stages, which underscores the importance of targeted, active screening for CKD. When CKD progresses to stage 5, life expectancy is drastically shortened unless life-saving renal replacement therapy (dialysis or kidney transplantation) is initiated. The treatment of smoking, which is a risk factor for CKD, also poses a challenge. Less than 10% of adults who want to quit smoking succeed in doing so, and those who do quit typically succeed only after making multiple attempts. In addition, many smokers have limited access to smoking cessation services, are unaware of available resources, or have misconceptions about smoking cessation therapies. Prevention and Treatment: There is evidence that quitting smoking may help prevent the development of CKD. However, glomerular filtration rates have been found to be higher in smokers than in nonsmokers, which could confound efforts to recognize smoking as a major risk factor for kidney disease. Efforts should continue to focus on the prevention of smoking, and nephrologists should promote smoking cessation as a means to prevent CKD progression.

Abstract The world's urban population is growing rapidly, and threatening natural ecosystems, especially streams. Urbanization leads to stream alterations, increased peak flow frequencies, and reduced water quality due to pollutants, morphological changes, and biodiversity loss, known as the urban stream syndrome. However, a shift towards recognizing urban streams as valuable natural systems is occurring, emphasizing green infrastructure and nature-based solutions. This study in Uruguay examined water quality in various watersheds with different urbanization levels and socio-environmental characteristics along a precipitation gradient. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and in situ data, we assessed physicochemical parameters, generated territorial variables, and identified key predictors of water quality. We found that urbanization, particularly urban areas, paved areas, and populations without sanitation, significantly influenced water quality parameters. These factors explained over 50% of the variation in water quality indicators. However, the relationship between urbanization and water quality was non-linear, with abrupt declines after specific urban intensity thresholds. Our results illustrate that ensuring sanitation networks and managing green areas effectively are essential for preserving urban stream water quality. This research underscores the importance of interdisciplinary teams and localized data for informed freshwater resource management.

Abstract This article aims to conduct a systematic literature review on the management studies of stakeholders in project management, in the period between the years 2020 and 2021, in the field of articles deposited in the database of Journals of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes). To this end, the protocol Main Items for Reporting Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (Prisma) was used for the selection of articles. The results indicate that since the release of the version "a first look at the PMBOK 7th edition guide, there are no articles in Portuguese that address stakeholder management from the perspective of the principles present in this version. Limitations of the study are considered the fact that the database of Capes journals presents limitations regarding the use of search engines. For future studies it is indicated that the theme be approached a systematic literature review using other databases.

Abstract Intestinal P-glycoprotein (P-gp) activity plays a crucial role in modulating the oral bioavailability of its substrates. Fexofenadine has commonly been used as a P-gp probe, although it is important to note the involvement of other drug transporters like, OATP1B1, OATP1B3, and OATP2B1. In vitro studies demonstrated an upregulation of P-gp protein in response to exposure to pregnancy-related hormones. The objective of this study was to investigate how intestinal P-gp activity is impacted by menopausal status. This study sampled fexofenadine plasma concentrations over 0-12 h after probe drug administration from two groups of patients with breast cancer: premenopausal (n = 20) and postmenopausal (n = 20). Fexofenadine plasma concentrations were quantified using liquid-chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Area under the plasma concentration-time curve from zero to infinity (AUC
