    Abstract High concentration of ammonia poses a common threat to the healthy breeding of marine aquaculture organisms. Since aquaculture water is rich in organic matter, heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria might play a crucial role in ammonia removal. However, their roles in ammonia oxidation remain unknown. Here, we report a novel strain isolated from shrimp aquaculture seawater, identified as Sneathiella aquimaris 216LB-ZA1–12T, capable of heterotrophic nitrification. It is the first characterized heterotrophic nitrifier of the order Sneathiellales in the class Alphaproteobacteria. It exhibits high activity in heterotrophic nitrification, removing nearly 94% of ammonium-N under carbon-constrained conditions in 8 days with no observed nitrite accumulation. The heterotrophic nitrification pathway, inferred based on detection and genomic data was as follows: NH4+→NH2OH→NO→NO2-→NO3-. While this pathway aligns with the classical nitrification pathway, while the significant difference lies in the absence of classical HAO and HOX encoding genes in the genome, which is common in heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria. In summary, this bacterium is not only valuable for studying the nitrifying mechanism, but also holds potential for practical applications in ammonia removal in marine aquaculture systems and saline wastewater.

    Abstract Background: Postcardiac injury syndrome (PCIS) is an easy-to-miss diagnosis, but it is not an uncommon complication. The phenomenon of echocardiography (ECHO) showing both severe pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is indeed rare in PCIS after extensive radiofrequency ablation.
    Case presentation: A 70-year-old male was diagnosed with persistent atrial fibrillation. The patient received radiofrequency catheter ablation due to his atrial fibrillation being refractory to antiarrhythmic drugs. After the anatomical three-dimensional models were created, ablations were performed on the left and right pulmonary veins, roof linear and bottom linear of the left atrium, and the cavo-tricuspid isthmus. The patient was discharged in sinus rhythm (SR). After 3 days, he was admitted to the hospital for gradually worsening dyspnea. Laboratory examination showed a normal leukocyte count with an increased percentage of neutrophils. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein concentration, interleukin-6, and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide were elevated. ECG exhibited SR, V
    Conclusions: The phenomenon of ECHO showing severe PAH with severe TR is indeed rare in PCIS. Due to the lack of diagnostic criteria, such patients are easily misdiagnosed, leading to a poor prognosis.

    Abstract Introduction Postoperative myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery is common and is associated with short- and long-term morbidity and mortality. However, the incidence and risk factors for postoperative acute myocardial injury (POAMI) are currently unknown due to inconsistent definitions. Methods We systematically searched PubMed and Web of Science to identify studies that applied the change value of preoperative and postoperative cardiac troponins to define cardiac injury. We estimated the pooled incidence, risk factors, and 30-day and long-term mortality of POAMI in noncardiac patients. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO, CRD42023401607. Results Ten cohorts containing 11,494 patients were included for analysis. The pooled incidence of POAMI was 20% (95% CI: 16% to 23%). Preoperative hypertension (OR: 1.47; 95% CI: 1.30 to 1.66), cardiac failure (OR: 2.63; 95% CI: 2.01 to 3.44), renal impairment (OR: 1.66; 95% CI: 1.48 to 1.86), diabetes (OR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.27 to 1.61), and preoperative beta-blocker intake (OR: 1.65; 95% CI: 1.10 to 2.49) were the risk factors for POAMI. Age (mean difference: 2.08 years; 95% CI: -0.47 to 4.62), sex (male, OR: 1.16; 95% CI: 0.77 to 1.76), body mass index (mean difference: 0.35; 95% CI: -0.86 to 1.57), preoperative coronary artery disease (OR: 2.10; 95% CI: 0.85 to 5.21), stroke (OR: 0.90; 95% CI: 0.50 to 1.59) and preoperative statins intake (OR: 0.65; 95% CI: 0.21 to 2.02) were not associated with POAMI. Patients with POAMI had higher preoperative hsTnT levels (mean difference: 5.92 ng/L; 95% CI: 4.17 to 7.67) and lower preoperative hemoglobin levels (mean difference: -1.29 g/dL; 95% CI: -1.43 to -1.15) than patients without. Conclusion Based on this meta-analysis, approximately 1 in 5 of noncardiac patients develop POAMI. However, the lack of a universally recognized definition for POAMI, which incorporates diverse cardiac biomarkers and patient groups, poses a challenge in accurately characterizing its incidence, risk factors, and clinical outcomes.

    Abstract The SAW (surface acoustic wave) gyroscopic effect is a key parameter that reflects the sensitivity performance of SAW angular velocity sensors. This study found that adding a layer of non-piezoelectric material with a lower reflection coefficient than that of the upper-layer material below the piezoelectric substrate to form a double-layer structure significantly enhanced the SAW gyroscopic effect, and the smaller the reflection coefficient of the lower-layer material, the stronger the SAW gyroscopic effect, with values being reached that were two to three times those with single-layer substrate structures. This was confirmed using a three-dimensional model, and the experimental results also showed that the thickness of the piezoelectric layer and the type of the lower-layer material also had a significant impact on the SAW gyroscopic effect. This novel discovery will pave the way for the future development of SAW angular velocity sensors.

    Abstract Because of the multi-pathway antibacterial mechanisms of nanomaterials, they have received widespread attention in wound therapy. However, owing to the complexities of bacterial responses toward nanomaterials, antibacterial molecular mechanisms remain unclear, making it difficult to rationally design highly efficient antibacterial nanomaterials. Fortunately, molecular dynamics simulations and omics techniques have been used as effective methods to further investigate the action targets of nanomaterials. Therefore, the review comprehensively analyzes the antibacterial mechanisms of nanomaterials from the morphology-dependent antibacterial activity and physicochemical/optical properties-dependent antibacterial activity, which provided guidance for constructing excellently efficient and broad-spectrum antibacterial nanomaterials for wound therapy. More importantly, the main molecular action targets of nanomaterials from the membranes, DNA, energy metabolism pathways, oxidative stress defense systems, ribosomes, and biofilms are elaborated in detail. Furthermore, nanomaterials used in wound therapy are reviewed and discussed. Finally, future directions of nanomaterials from mechanisms to nanomedicine are further proposed.

    Abstract In this work, a high-performance molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) sensor for the determination of β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) was fabricated by using trypsin as a template removal reagent. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) designed for electrode modification accelerate the heterogeneous electron transfer rate to enhance the sensitivity of the prepared sensor. With enzymatic hydrolysis, β-LG templates were effectively digested into short peptides without damage to the MIP so that the imprinted cavities of the MIP were preserved with a complete spatial structure exhibiting high selectivity. Based on the optimization of the protein removal time and pH, the prepared MIP electrochemical sensor could recognize β-LG in the range of 4-100 ng/mL with a low detection limit (3.58 ng/mL). The sensor also expressed excellent selectivity and was successfully applied to real sample detection. The results demonstrate that the proposed MIP electrochemical sensor may be a promising candidate for camel milk adulteration detection.
