Abstract Purpose: The Liyang cohort study on chronic diseases and risk factors monitoring in China (Liyang Study) is a prospective population-based study which aims to investigate and identify the determinants of the most prevalent chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and to evaluate the impact of demographic characteristics, lifestyle, dietary habits, cognition, disability and NCDs on the health-related quality of life.
Participants: Between March 2019 and June 2020, 10 056 individuals aged ≥18 years were administered a baseline survey through a multistage cluster random sampling in Liyang City, southern Jiangsu Province, China.
Findings to date: The Liyang Study included detailed sociodemographic, anthropometric and health-related behaviour, common NCDs and blood sample information. Moreover, the study gathered a series of data on specific scales including the activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, abbreviated mental test, Food Frequency Questionnaire and EuroQol 5-Dimensions 5-Levels Scale. Of the 10 056 participants, 52.92% (n=5322) were female and 92.26% (n=9278) came from rural areas. The mean age was 49.9±16.2 years. Men were more likely to have a higher level of education, annual income and a paid job than women (p<0.05). The top three overall most prevalent NCDs in the study were hypertension (18.06%, n=1815), digestive diseases (7.88%, n=791), and arthritis or rheumatism (5.28%, n=530). Women had a significantly higher prevalence of diabetes (5.46%, n=290 vs 4.42%, n=209, p=0.016) and arthritis (6.04%, n=321 vs 4.42%, n=209, p<0.001) than men, while the opposite was true for chronic lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (1.37%, n=65 vs 0.92%, n=49, p=0.032) and chronic hepatic diseases (0.80%, n=38 vs 0.47%, n=25, p=0.035).
Future plans: The current study will give valuable insights into the association between sociodemographic factors, health-related behaviour, diet, cognition, disability and genetic factors and the most prevalent NCDs among local community residents. Starting from 2022, a follow-up survey will be conducted every 3 years to further explore the causal relationship between the above factors and NCDs.

Abstract Objective: To investigate the prevalence of myopia among children and adolescents in a local area (Liyang City) of China and analyze the influencing factors, so as to formulate corresponding preventive measures.
Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted, mainly investigating subjects' age, gender, residence (urban/rural areas), parental myopia, daily time spent outdoors, daily sleep time, distance between computer screen and eyes, less than one punch (10 cm) from the chest to the edge of the desk when reading and writing, one inch (3 cm) between finger and pen tip when writing, number of in-school physical education (PE) classes, length of TV watching, and size of TV. The myopia of all participants was recorded.
Results: This study enrolled 7,948 children and adolescents, including 4,733 (59.55%) cases of myopia, 1,025 (12.90%) of astigmatism, 251 (3.16%) of hyperopia, and 699 (8.79%) of anisometropia respectively. There were 2,519 (53.22%) cases of myopia in the left eye and 2,214 (46.78%) in the right eye. Low, moderate, and high myopia were determined in 2,682 (56.67%), 1,583 (33.45%), and 468 (9.89%), respectively. In terms of spherical equivalent (SEQ), a statistically lower SEQ was observed in urban areas (-1.56±0.46 d) versus suburban counties (-1.17±0.33 d), and in females (-1.68±0.30 d) compared with males (-1.17±0.44 d). The mean SEQ gradually decreased with age. The prevalence of myopia was 63.84% (2,436/3,816) in females, statistically higher than that of 55.59% (2,197/4,132) in males (χ
Conclusions: Parents are advised to pay attention to daily time spent outdoors, sleep time, distance between the computer screen and the eyes, distance between the chest and the edge of the table when reading and writing, and length of TV watching of their children. As far as schools are concerned, PE activity time should be properly maintained to ensure that children have enough outdoor exercise time to reduce eye fatigue.

Abstract: ... social–economic system in Liyang from 2005 to 2020 by adopting the entropy weight method. The results ... showed that Liyang was generally in a state of sustainable development, with good social sustainability ...

Abstract Coordinating the relationship between resources, environmental protection, and economic development is essential for regional sustainable development. Various frameworks and models for quantifying the sustainable development of regional natural–social–economic systems have been produced. This paper focused on measuring regional sustainable development from the perspective of sustainable consumption and production. The study improved the emergy sustainable indices and the evaluation system commonly used in the method of emergy accounting by introducing input and output emergy into the emergy flows. Then, we proposed new subsystem sustainable indexes for evaluating and analyzing the sustainable development trend of the complex natural–social–economic system in Liyang from 2005 to 2020 by adopting the entropy weight method. The results showed that Liyang was generally in a state of sustainable development, with good social sustainability. The economic and natural sustainability indexes were low, which might cause unsustainable risks in the future. From the input structure and production efficiency perspective, the secondary industry with the highest emergy output has a meager net output rate. In contrast, the tertiary industry has a higher net output rate (NOR) and better output efficiency, which should be the core industry in the region’s future development. From the perspective of environmental impact and resource and environmental carrying capacity, the natural contribution rate and environmental carrying rate should be improved and the waste emergy rate necessary to be reduced. This study hopes to provide implications for formulating regional land use, industrial planning, and sustainable development policies.

Abstract In the context of global food insecurity, a large amount of cultivated land in China has been occupied by aquaculture ponds, leading to a series of variations in the ecological environment. The Chinese government pays close attention to the problem. In order to achieve sustainable development and ensure the safety of China's cultivated land, the paper uses Liyang City as an example to discuss the spatial characteristics of the expansion of aquaculture ponds through occupying cultivated lands and analyzes the variations in ecosystem service value and cultivated land function. The conclusions are as follows: (1) 2073.24 hectares of cultivated lands were occupied for expanding aquaculture ponds in Liyang from 2009 to 2019, and there was a small number of new aquaculture ponds in the ecological protection area, which shows that the aquaculture ponds in Liyang City are at the stage of disorderly expansion; (2) the total value of ecosystem services increased by 1.43%; supply and support services values decreased, but the increase in regulation and cultural services values was sufficient to more than compensate for the mentioned losses; and (3) the expansion of aquaculture ponds leads to a decrease in the carbon storage of cultivated land, which in turn has negative impacts such as an increase in atmospheric carbon concentration.

Abstract Based on the one-year hourly water temperature profiles and the associated environmental drivers during the past eight years in Shahe Reservoir, Jiangsu Province, China from 2009 to 2016, the factors underlying the seasonal variation of thermal stratification and water quality response were investigated. It was shown that the thermal stratification was a typical subtropical one-cycle mixing model, lasting from May to September. The thermal stratification appeared and disappeared when the surface water temperature was 21 ℃ in the late spring and 19 ℃ in the middle of autumn. The difference between the water temperature at the epilimnion and hypolimnion increased with increasing solar radiation. When the air temperature was above 30 ℃, the stability of the thermal stratification increased. Heavy storms reduced the temperature of the surface water and weakened the temperature stratification of the column above a 5 m depth but had limited impact on the stratification of the hypolimnion deeper than 5 m. The thermal stratification greatly impacted the water quality of the lake. Hypoxia in the bottom water occurred by thermal stratification, leading to increased NH

Abstract Objective: To analyze the epidemic characteristics of imported malaria in Liyang City, so as to provide the evidence for formulating appropriate control strategies and measures.
Methods: The malaria epidemic situation reports, case epidemiological investigations and the follow-up materials of counterparts returned together with the cases were collected and analyzed in Liyang City from 2007 to 2014.
Results: Totally 53 imported malaria cases were reported and they were all laboratory confirmed in Liyang City from 2007 to 2014. Forty-nine cases (92.5%) were imported from African countries, 37 cases (69.8%) were Plasmodium falciparum infection, and 37 cases (69.8%) had overseas incidence history. Forty cases (75.5%) were aged between 30 and 49 years, and 52 cases (98.1%) were male, 42 cases (79.2%) were farmers. These cases were distributed in all the 10 towns and there were no obvious seasonal variation for onset time. The median time from onset to seeing a doctor was 3 d, and the median time from seeing a doctor to being diagnosed was 0 d. The first visit health facilities by the patients were various, and the diagnostic health facilities were all the medical institutions at the county level or above, and the standardized treatment rate was 100%.
Conclusion: During the last 5 consecutive years, there have been no local infected malaria cases in Liyang City, and the remarkable results have been achieved in malaria elimination. However, there are still many imported malaria cases, and the infected species are diverse. Therefore, the imported malaria is still the key of malaria prevention and control.

Abstract Objective: To investigate the Echinococcus infection of people and domestic animals in Liyang City, so as to provide the evidence for the establishment of control measures of echinococcosis.
Methods: The formerly confirmed cases and clue cases were investigated. The Echinococcus antibody in serum of children aged from 7 to 12 years old and adults in key towns and control towns was detected with ELISA, and the antigen in fecal samples of dogs in key towns was also detected. B ultrasound was applied to examine the ELISA positive cases, family member and the neighbored people around them. The sheep in the market were dissected and examined for Echinococcus.
Results: The Echinococcus antibody positive rates were 0.93% and 0.52% in children and adults, respectively. The Echinococcus antigen positive rate was 0.95% in dogs. There were no significant difference between the positive rates of the children and adults (CHI2 = 2.124, P > 0.05). No cases were found by ultrasonic examination and no Echinococcus infection was found in the sheep.
Conclusion: The people with Echinococcus antibody in serum and dogs with antigen in their feces are found in the surveillance of echinococcosis, therefore, there exists the complete chain of transmission in local. Thus, in the prevention and control work for the disease, the monitoring of dog feces, quarantine of sheep from other regions, as well as the population health education in key areas should be strengthened.

Abstract Objective: To investigate the prevalence of major parasitic diseases and related knowledge, attitude and practice among rural residents in Liyang City, so as to provide the evidence for formulating appropriate preventive strategies and measures.
Methods: Three villages were selected from three towns as survey sites, and the residents who were above three years old and had been in the village for over six months were investigated. The Kato-Katz technique was applied to detect intestinal parasite eggs in residents' feces, and the cellophane anal swab was used to detect
Results: Totally 759 residents were investigated and tested at the three rural survey sites, and only 2 cases were detected of parasitic infection and the total infection rate was 0.26%. Both cases were mild infections without mixed infection. The total awareness rate of knowledge on ascariasis, trichuriasis and ancylostomiasis was 37.9%, while the awareness rate of knowledge on clonorchiasis was 13.8%. The age and educational level were important factors of the knowledge on prevention and control of parasitic diseases among the residents. The formation rates of washing hands before meal and after using the toilet, and never drinking unboiled water were 83.8% and 92.1%, respectively. Totally 11.6% of the residents usually ate raw or half-cooked freshwater fishes and shrimps, and 53.0% had not the behavior to prepare raw and cooked food using the different chopping boards. The proportions of residents using fresh feces as manure and working in the field with bare feet were 13.8% and 22.8% respectively. The proportions of residents who thought they could, could not, or were not sure to change the risk behaviors and habits of parasitic infections were 40.2%, 28.5% and 31.4%, respectively.
Conclusions: The infection rate of major parasitic diseases among the rural residents in Liyang City is low, and the awareness rate of knowledge on preventing parasitic diseases is also low. Therefore, the health education on the prevention and control of parasitic diseases should be strengthened to guide them to develop good hygiene, diet and farming habits. The environmental sanitation should be continuously improved to block the endemic of parasitic infection.
