Abstract Approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) search is a fundamental problem in areas such as data management, information retrieval and machine learning. Recently, Li et al. proposed a learned approach named AdaptNN to support adaptive ANN query processing. In the middle of query execution, AdaptNN collects a number of runtime features and predicts termination condition for each individual query, by which better end-to-end latency is attained. Despite its efficiency, using runtime features complicates the learning process and leads to performance degradation. Radically different from AdaptNN, we argue that it is promising to predict termination condition before query exetution. Particularly, we developed Tao, a general learning framework for Terminating ANN queries Adaptively using Only static features. Upon the arrival of a query, Tao first maps the query to a local intrinsic dimension (LID) number, and then predicts the termination condition using LID instead of runtime features. By decoupling prediction procedure from query execution, Tao eliminates the laborious feature selection process involved in AdaptNN. Besides, two design principles are formulated to guide the application of Tao and improve the explainability of the prediction model. We integrate two state-of-the-art indexing approaches, i.e., IMI and HNSW, into Tao, and evaluate the performance over several million to billion-scale datasets. Experimental results show that, in addition to its simplicity and generality , Tao achieves up to 2.69x speedup even compared to its counterpart, at the same high accuracy targets.

Abstract EDITORIAL: 'In the short but hot summer nights, only by opening doors and windows can the room be cooled down slightly' complained the famous Chinese poet Fu Du in his poem Summer Night Lament more than 1000 years ago. Currently, people are suffering from the summer heat, with ambient temperatures around or exceeding 40 °C. Phrases such as "killer hot days" are no longer exaggerated statements. Hot weather can not only frustrate people, but also make people sick or even endanger lives owing to heatstroke. Fortunately, scientists have come up with a great invention, which will provide us with some much-needed relief in hot summers-the optical metafabric. The magic of this innovation is that, although it feels just like a normal fabric and has all the necessary properties of a wearable fabric, a garment made with it can cool down one's body by nearly 5 °C even under direct sunlight, making it ideal for summer clothing. In the last few years, a team led by Prof. Guangming Tao of Huazhong University of Science and Technology has achieved remarkable progress in the area of optical metafabrics, finding new applications for this material and making it more affordable. Now, please follow our Light Science Editor as he explores this amazing new material and finds how it has been used in the industry, society, and Winter Olympics.

Abstract The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, also known as JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). A ton-level liquid scintillator detector will be placed at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. The reactor antineutrino spectrum will be measured with sub-percent energy resolution, to provide a reference spectrum for future reactor neutrino experiments, and to provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. A spherical acrylic vessel containing 2.8 ton gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator will be viewed by 10 m^2 Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) of >50% photon detection efficiency with almost full coverage. The photoelectron yield is about 4500 per MeV, an order higher than any existing large-scale liquid scintillator detectors. The detector operates at -50 degree C to lower the dark noise of SiPMs to an acceptable level. The detector will measure about 2000 reactor antineutrinos per day, and is designed to be well shielded from cosmogenic backgrounds and ambient radioactivities to have about 10% background-to-signal ratio. The experiment is expected to start operation in 2022.

Abstract The sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and high iridium loading in catalyst coated membrane (CCM) are the key challenges for practical proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). Herein, we demonstrate high-surface-area nano-metal diborides as promising supports of iridium-based OER nanocatalysts for realizing efficient, low-iridium-loading PEMWE. Nano-metal diborides are prepared by a novel disulphide-to-diboride transition route, in which the entropy contribution to the Gibbs free energy by generation of gaseous sulfur-containing products plays a crucial role. Abstract Objective: To study the correlation between episcleral vein pressure (EVP) with intraocular pressure (IOP), exophthalmos, and optic nerve injury in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) patients and to explore the possibility of higher EVP as an intervention indicator in TAO patients.
Methods: This study was a case-control study, including the TAO group and normal control group. TAO group: 15 patients (30 eyes) were diagnosed with TAO complicated with exophthalmos. Normal control group: 14 cases, 28 eyes. EVP, IOP, exophthalmos, retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, and visual field were measured, respectively in the two groups. Non-parametric test was used to compare the difference between EVP and IOP between the two groups, test the correlation between EVP and IOP or exophthalmos, and analyze the clinical characteristics of optic nerve injury in patients with elevated IOP in the TAO group.
Results: The EVP in the TAO group (15.30±3.48 mmHg) was significantly higher than the normal control group (8.82±1.44 mmHg) (P < .001). The IOP in the TAO group (18.55±8.13 mmHg) was significantly higher than in the normal control group (12.98±2.10 mmHg) (P < .001) (3) There was a positive linear correlation between EVP (X) and IOP (Y) in TAO group: Y = 0.9684x + 3.737 (rs>0, P < .05); There was a positive linear correlation between EVP (Y) and exophthalmos (X) in TAO group: Y = 0.9218x - 2.691 (rs>0, P < .05); Some TAO patients with elevated EVP had the related manifestations of optic nerve function impairment: thinning of retinal nerve fiber layer and loss of visual field. However, there was no clear correlation between EVP and the thickness of the optic nerve fiber layer (P = .4354).
Conclusion: The increase of EVP is an important factor leading to elevated IOP in TAO patients, which may be used as an indicator for intervention treatment in TAO patients. EVP can be used to indirectly evaluate orbital pressure. TAO patients can develop secondary glaucoma with irreversible optic nerve damage due to the continuous Elevation of EVP.
