    Abstract Two vestibular signals, rotational and inertial cues, converge for the perception of complex motion. However, how vestibular perception is built on neuronal behaviors and decision-making processes, especially during the simultaneous presentation of rotational and inertial cues, has yet to be elucidated in humans. In this study, we analyzed the perceptual responses of 20 participants after pairwise rotational experiments, comprised of four control and four test sessions. In both control and test sessions, participants underwent clockwise and counterclockwise rotations in head-down and head-up positions. The difference between the control and test sessions was the head re-orientation relative to gravity after rotations, thereby providing only rotational cues in the control sessions and both rotational and inertial cues in the test sessions. The accuracy of perceptual responses was calculated by comparing the direction of rotational and inertial cues acquired from participants with that predicted by the velocity-storage model. The results showed that the accuracy of rotational perception ranged from 80 to 95% in the four control sessions but significantly decreased to 35 to 75% in the four test sessions. The accuracy of inertial perception in the test sessions ranged from 50 to 70%. The accuracy of rotational perception improved with repetitive exposure to the simultaneous presentation of both rotational and inertial cues, while the accuracy of inertial perception remained steady. The results suggested a significant interaction between rotational and inertial perception and implied that vestibular perception acquired in patients with vestibular disorders are potentially inaccurate.

    Abstract Background: The world's population is rapidly aging, and attention to and research on the increase in life expectancy and age-related diseases are needed. This study aimed to review the in vivo studies on the anti-aging effects of herbal medicines.
    Methods: In vivo studies of single or complex herbal medicines for anti-aging that were published in the last five years were included in this review. The following databases were used: PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science and EMBASE.
    Results: A total of 41 studies were considered eligible for the review. The articles were classified into body organs and functions, experimental country, herbal medicine, extraction method, administration route, dosage, duration, animal model, aging-induced method, sex, number of animals per group, and outcomes and mechanisms A single herbal extract was used in a total of 21 studies including
    Conclusions: Herbal medicine exhibited beneficial effects on anti-aging in various parts of the body and its function. Further investigation of the appropriate herbal medicine prescriptions and their components is recommended.

    Abstract Coxsackievirus A6 (CV-A6) has emerged as the predominant causative agent of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in young children. Since the declaration of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a global pandemic, the incidence of infectious diseases, including HFMD, has decreased markedly. When social mitigation was relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, the re-emergence of HFMD was observed in Gwangju, South Korea, and seasonal characteristics of the disease appeared to have changed. To investigate the molecular characteristics of enterovirus (EV) associated with HFMD during 2022, 277 specimens were collected. Children aged younger than 5 years accounted for the majority of affected individuals. EV detection and genotyping were performed using real-time RT-PCR and nested RT-PCR followed by sequence analysis. The EV detection rate was found to be 82.3%, and the main genotype identified was CV-A6. Sixteen CV-A6 samples were selected for whole genome sequencing. According to phylogenetic analysis, all CV-A6 strains from this study belonged to the sub-genotype D3 clade based on VP1 sequences. Analysis of 3D polymerase phylogeny showed that only the recombinant RF-A group was identified. In conclusion, circulating EV types should be continuously monitored to understand pathogen emergence and evolution during the post-pandemic era.

    Abstract Diabetes mellitus is characterized by hyperglycemia. Low-grade bacterial infection with hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes is associated with atherosclerosis development. Therefore, this study hypothesized that macrophages lead to more severe diabetic complications under combined conditions of high glucose and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation than under normoglycemic conditions. Zerumbone is the main component of Zingiber zerumbet Smith essential oil, a type of wild ginger. It possesses various biomedical activities, including antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities; however, the precise mechanism of its anti-inflammatory and epigenetic effects is not fully understood. In this study, the effects of zerumbone on the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines and its underlying regulatory mechanism were investigated in THP-1-derived macrophages exposed to high glucose and LPS. THP-1-derived macrophages were cultured under normoglycemic (5.5 mmol/L glucose) or hyperglycemic (25 mmol/L glucose) conditions in the absence or presence of zerumbone (5-50 μM) for 48 hours and then treated with 100 ng/mL LPS for 6 hours. Zerumbone (25 and 50 μM) suppressed the production of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 and the activation of cyclooxygenase-2, nuclear factor-κB, histone deacetylases 3 proteins, and Toll-like receptor messenger RNA (mRNA) and increased the transcription of the sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), SIRT3, and SIRT6 mRNAs. Taken together, our results suggest that zerumbone may exert beneficial effects on diabetes and its complications.

    Abstract Background: and Purpose: The number of patients with cognitive impairment is increasing worldwide. Therapeutic drugs that slow disease progression are being developed; however, further research is required. This study investigated the effects of Kami Guibi-tang on patients with various types of cognitive decline. Methods: This study was a single-center, retrospective chart review of patients who visited KyungHee University Hospital at Gangdong from January 2015 to March 2022. The study included participants who took Kami Guibi-tang for more than 90 days and were assessed on the Korean version Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-K) scores before and after treatment. Participants who received other liquid herbal medicines during the treatment were excluded. The outcome of interest was changed scores in MMSE-K and Short form of Geriatric Depression Scale (S-GDS). Results: A total of 31 participants were included. The total MMSE-K score significantly increased with time and showed a significant increase at 3 and 9 months compared with baseline. Among the MMSE-K subscores, the orientation subscore showed a significant increase at three months compared with baseline, and the attention and calculation subscore showed a significant increase with time. In addition, four participants with vascular dementia showed a significant increase in the total MMSE-K score over time and a significant increase after 9 months compared with baseline. The S-GDS score in 31 participants showed a significant decrease with time and at all time points compared with baseline. Conclusions: Kami Guibi-tang may improve cognitive function in patients with cognitive decline.

    Abstract Background: The impact of tumor-infiltrating neutrophils (TINs) on clinical outcomes has been reported in various cancer types, but their role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been fully evaluated. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic values for TINs in HCC patients undergoing curative resection.
    Methods: We assessed immune markers (CD3, CD4, CD8, CD66b) using immunohistochemistry in 115 patients who underwent curative resection for HCC. We analyzed the prognostic values for tumor-infiltrating immune cells, including neutrophils, and other clinicopathological factors.
    Results: In the Multivariate Cox analysis of overall survival (OS), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) ≥ 100 ng/mL (hazard ratio (HR), 2.74, 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.17-6.44; P = 0.021) and Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) B/C stage (HR, 3.98, 95% CI, 1.68-9.43; P = 0.020) were found to be independent poor prognostic factors in HCC patients undergoing resection.     Abstract Background/objectives: Unregulated inflammatory responses caused by hyperglycemia may induce diabetes complications. Hesperetin, a bioflavonoid, is a glycoside in citrus fruits and is known to have antioxidant and anticarcinogenic properties. However, the effect of inflammation on the diabetic environment has not been reported to date. In this study, we investigated the effect of hesperetin on proinflammatory cytokine secretion and its underlying mechanistic regulation in THP-1 macrophages with co-treatment LPS and hyperglycemic conditions.
    Materials/methods: THP-1 cells differentiated by PMA (1 μM) were cultured for 48 h in the presence or absence of hesperetin under normoglycemic (5.5 mM/L glucose) or hyperglycemic (25 mM/L glucose) conditions and then treated with LPS (100 ng/mL) for 6 h before harvesting. Inflammation-related proteins and mRNA levels were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, western blot, and quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses.
    Results: Hesperetin (0-100 μM, 48 h) treatment did not affect cell viability. The tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 levels increased in cells co-treated with LPS under hyperglycemic conditions compared to normoglycemic conditions, and these increases were decreased by hesperetin treatment.     Conclusions: Our results suggest that hesperetin may be a potential agent for suppressing inflammation in diabetes.

    Abstract Pain in Parkinson’s disease (PD) represents a complex phenotype known to decrease quality of life. This pragmatic randomized, controlled clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of pharmacopuncture (PA) for improving pain symptoms and investigated the corresponding therapeutic mechanisms in patients with PD. Ninety patients with PD-related pain were randomly allocated to receive either PA, manual acupuncture, or usual care in a 1:1:1 ratio; sixty healthy controls were included for comparative analysis of brain imaging data. Over 12 weeks, study treatment provided 2 days per week for 8 weeks with a follow-up period of 4 weeks. The primary outcome measure was the King’s Parkinson’s Disease Pain Scale score for assessing improvement in PD-related pain, including a sub-analysis to investigate the pattern of changes in pain according to a PD-related pain mechanism-based classification. Secondary outcome measures included a numerical rating scale-based assessment of the intensity and location of pain and changes in pain-associated symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. Exploratory outcome measures included structural and functional brain patterns on magnetic resonance imaging, blood molecular signature changes, gait analysis, facial expression and movement assessment in response to emotional stimuli, and a traditional Korean medicine syndrome differentiation questionnaire. The trial findings provided important clinical evidence for the effectiveness of PA in the management of PD-related pain and its associated symptoms, and helped elucidate the mechanism of its therapeutic effect on PD-related pain.
