Abstract Background: Many species of red algae belonging to the phylum Rhodophyta are consumed by humans as raw materials for nutrition and medicine. As the seaweed market grows, the importance of the laver species has increased. The classification of red algal species has changed significantly, and the accuracy of this classification has improved significantly in recent years. Here, we report the complete circular genomes of the chloroplasts (cp) and mitochondria (mt) of three laver species (Neoporphyra dentata, Neoporphyra seriata, and Neopyropia yezoensis).
Objective: This study aims to assemble, annotate, and characterize the organization of the organelle genomes of three laver species, conduct comparative genomic studies, and develop molecular markers based on SNPs.
Methods: We analyzed organelle genome structures, repeat sequences, sequence divergence, gene rearrangements, and phylogenetic relationships of three laver species.
Results: The chloroplast genomes of the three species contained an average of 212 protein-coding genes (PCGs), while the mitochondrial genomes contained an average of 25 PCGs. We reconstructed the phylogenetic trees based on both chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes using 201 and 23 PCGs (in cp and mt genomes, respectively) shared in the class Bangiophyceae (and five species of Florideophyceae class used as an outgroup). In addition, 12 species-specific molecular markers were developed for qRT-PCR analysis.
Conclusions: This is the first report of Neoporphyra seriata complete organellar genomes. With the results, this study provides useful genetic information regarding taxonomic discrepancies, the reconstruction of phylogenetic trees, and the evolution of red algae. Moreover, the species-specific markers can be used as fast and easy methods to identify a target species.

Abstract Introduction: The association between microalbuminuria and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is accumulating in various patient populations. However, when stratified by sex, the relationship between microalbuminuria and CVD remains unclear.
Method: We obtained data from the 2011-2014 and 2019-2020 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Microalbuminuria was measured based on spot urine albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR). The Framingham risk score (FRS) model was implemented to evaluate the CVD risk. Linear and logistic regression models were used to identify the associations of microalbuminuria status with cardiometabolic predictors and CVD status determined by the FRS score.
Results: Among 19,340 representative Korean participants, the (UACR) in Korean women and men with history of CVD was higher than in those without history of CVD. Among patients without history of CVD, multivariate regression analysis showed that a high UACR was related to older age, lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, higher total cholesterol level, higher systolic blood pressure, higher prevalence of current smoking, higher prevalence of diabetes, and higher anti-hypertensive medication use in both women and men. The UACR showed a positive linear correlation with the Framingham risk score in both women and men.
Conclusion: The presence of microalbuminuria was significantly associated with the cardiometabolic risk factors and the increased risk of CVD evaluated by FRS model in both women and men in a nationally representative sample of Korea.

Abstract Conflicting studies exist on the association between menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) and skin cancers, such as melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the risk of skin cancer from MHT using data from 2002 to 2019 from the National Health Insurance Service in South Korea. We included 192,202 patients with MHT and 494,343 healthy controls. Women > 40 years who had menopause between 2002 and 2011 were included. Patients with MHT had at least one MHT for at least 6 months and healthy controls had never been prescribed MHT agents. We measured the incidence of melanoma and NMSC. Melanoma developed in 70 (0.03%) patients with MHT and 249 (0.05%) controls, while the incidence of NMSC was 417 (0.22%) in the MHT group and 1680 (0.34%) in the controls. Tibolone (hazard ratio [HR] 0.812, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.694-0.949) and combined oestrogen plus progestin by the manufacturer (COPM; HR 0.777, 95% CI 0.63-0.962) lowered the risk of NMSC, while other hormone groups did not change the risk. Overall, MHT was not associated with melanoma incidence in menopausal Korean women. Instead, tibolone and COPM were associated with a decrease in NMSC occurrence.

Abstract This study aimed to develop a deep learning (DL) model for predicting the recurrence risk of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) based on its histopathological features. Clinicopathological data and whole slide images from 164 LUAD cases were collected and used to train DL models with an ImageNet pre-trained efficientnet-b2 architecture, densenet201, and resnet152. The models were trained to classify each image patch into high-risk or low-risk groups, and the case-level result was determined by multiple instance learning with final FC layer's features from a model from all patches. Analysis of the clinicopathological and genetic characteristics of the model-based risk group was performed. For predicting recurrence, the model had an area under the curve score of 0.763 with 0.750, 0.633 and 0.680 of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in the test set, respectively. High-risk cases for recurrence predicted by the model (HR group) were significantly associated with shorter recurrence-free survival and a higher stage (both, p < 0.001). The HR group was associated with specific histopathological features such as poorly differentiated components, complex glandular pattern components, tumor spread through air spaces, and a higher grade. In the HR group, pleural invasion, necrosis, and lymphatic invasion were more frequent, and the size of the invasion was larger (all, p < 0.001). Several genetic mutations, including TP53 (p = 0.007) mutations, were more frequently found in the HR group. The results of stages I-II were similar to those of the general cohort. DL-based model can predict the recurrence risk of LUAD and identify the presence of the TP53 gene mutation by analyzing histopathologic features.

Abstract Purpose: The prevalence of Group B
Materials and methods: From January 2018 to December 2020, data from the Seoul Clinical Laboratories on vaginal swab cultures were retrospectively analyzed to detect maternal GBS carriers. Each swab specimen was inoculated onto a 5% blood agar plate and incubated at 35℃-37℃ in a 5% CO
Results: The overall nationwide GBS colonization rate in pregnant Korean women was found to be 10.6% (3578/33721). The maternal GBS colonization rates ranged from 10.5%-10.8% over the 3-year study period. The GBS colonization rates by province, in descending order, were as follows: Jeolla-do, 13.2%; Gangwon-do, 12.0%; Chungcheong-do, 11.8%; Gyeonggi-do, 11.3%; Seoul, 10.2%; and Gyeongsang-do, 9.6%. During the study period, the resistance rates against chloramphenicol, levofloxacin, clindamycin, erythromycin, and tetracycline were 2.6%-2.7%, 18.2%-19.6%, 33.4%-35.7%, 35.6%-36.8%, and 50.5%-53.3%, respectively.
Conclusion: In pregnant Korean women, GBS colonization rates were in the range of 9.6%-13.2%, with Gyeongsang-do being the lowest and Jeolla-do the highest. The resistance rate against clindamycin was high (33.4%-35.7%). GBS colonization rates during pregnancy should be studied nationwide according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-recommended guidelines with periodic antimicrobial resistance monitoring.

Abstract Sargassum is one of the most important brown algal genera that can be used as food and raw material for medicinal purpose, and has various beneficial effects. As the classification of Sargassum species is currently based on their morphological characteristics, organellar genome sequences of Sargassum would provide important information for accurate identification of species and developing species-specific markers. We sequenced the complete organellar genomes of six Sargassum species, including the first complete chloroplast genome sequences of S. fulvellum, S. serratifolium, S. macrocarpum, and S. siliquastrum, and the first complete mitochondrial genome sequences of S. fulvellum, S. serratifolium, and S. macrocarpum. The chloroplast genomes of the 6 Sargassum species contained 139 protein-coding genes (PCGs), and the mitochondrial genomes possessed 37 PCGs. A comparative study was performed between the newly sequenced organellar genomes and 44 other species belonging to class Phaeophyceae. Phylogenetic relationships using PCGs shared by Phaeophyceae species were constructed with IQ-TREE 2 using the maximum likelihood method. In addition, we developed real-time PCR markers based on SNPs to distinguish the 6 Sargassum species. Our results provide useful information for establishing phylogenetic relationships between brown algae.

Abstract This study was conducted to investigate potential differences in vaccine efficacy between patients undergoing palliative chemotherapy and receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. Additionally, the study proved the influence of vaccination timing on vaccine efficacy during active chemotherapy. Anti-receptor-binding domain (RBD) IgG binding antibody assays and surrogate neutralizing antibody assays were performed after BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273 vaccination in 45 solid cancer patients (23 adjuvant and 22 palliative chemotherapy) and in 24 healthy controls before vaccination (baseline), at every two to four weeks after the first (post-dose 1) and the second vaccination (post-dose 2). The levels of anti-RBD IgG and neutralizing antibodies increased significantly from baseline through post-dose 1 to post-dose 2 in all three groups. At the post-dose 1, the anti-RBD IgG and neutralizing antibody levels were significantly lower in cancer patients than in healthy controls. However, by post-dose 2, the seropositivity of anti-RBD IgG and neutralizing antibodies uniformly reached 100% across all groups, with no significant disparity in antibody levels among the three groups. Moreover, the antibody titers were not significantly different between patients with a vaccine and chemotherapy interval of more than 14 days or those with less than 14 days. This study demonstrated that after second doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, humoral immune responses in patients receiving chemotherapy were comparable to those of healthy controls, regardless of whether the purpose of the anti-cancer treatment was palliative or adjuvant. Furthermore, the timing of vaccination did not affect the level of humoral immunity after the second vaccination.
