Abstract A matrix $A$ is said to have the $\ell_p$-Restricted Isometry Property ($\ell_p$-RIP) if for all vectors $x$ of up to some sparsity $k$, $\|{Ax}\|_p$ is roughly proportional to $\|{x}\|_p$. We study this property for $m \times n$ matrices of rank proportional to $n$ and $k = \Theta(n)$. In this parameter regime, $\ell_p$-RIP matrices are closely connected to Euclidean sections, and are "real analogs" of testing matrices for locally testable codes. It is known that with high probability, random dense $m\times n$ matrices (e.g., with i.i.d. $\pm 1$ entries) are $\ell_2$-RIP with $k \approx m/\log n$, and sparse random matrices are $\ell_p$-RIP for $p \in [1,2)$ when $k, m = \Theta(n)$. However, when $m = \Theta(n)$, sparse random matrices are known to not be $\ell_2$-RIP with high probability. Against this backdrop, we show that sparse matrices cannot be $\ell_2$-RIP in our parameter regime. On the other hand, for $p \neq 2$, we show that every $\ell_p$-RIP matrix must be sparse. Thus, sparsity is incompatible with $\ell_2$-RIP, but necessary for $\ell_p$-RIP for $p \neq 2$. Under a suitable interpretation, our negative result about $\ell_2$-RIP gives an impossibility result for a certain continuous analog of "$c^3$-LTCs": locally testable codes of constant rate, constant distance and constant locality that were constructed in recent breakthroughs.

Abstract p-Cresol is a neurotoxic and nephrotoxic carcinogenic aromatic substance produced as a result of microbial fermentation in the intestine. The derivatives of p-cresol (p-cresyl sulphate or p-cresyl glucuronide) have a deleterious effect on renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis. Human gut seems to be inhabited with a diverse microbial population capable of detoxifying many aromatic compounds. However, the knowledge on the role of gut microbes in metabolizing p-cresol is limited. Hence, the present study aims to investigate p-cresol detoxification by intestinal bacteria isolated from human feces. Three potential p-cresol tolerant isolates were selected and identified as Enterococcus faecalis strains (UTD-1, UTD-2 and UTD-3) by 16SrRNA gene sequencing. All three E. faecalis isolates decreased the p-cresol concentration (30 µg/ml) at a higher rate with extracellular extracts (2.58-9.53 µg/ml) as compared to intracellular (0.55-5.28 µg/ml) extract. These three potential isolates also exhibited tolerance to gastrointestinal conditions for up to 60 min. Added to its potential, the expression of virulent genes (esp, gelE, and cyl) was found to be suppressed when subjected to bile stress under in vitro conditions. HPLC analysis displayed transformed products from extracellular extract treated samples were comparable to the metabolite standard of the p-cresol degradation pathway. Infrared spectral analysis too showed the spectrum similarity with metabolite standard. Thus, conclusively, intestinal isolates E. faecalis (UTD-1, UTD-2 and UTD-3) might be a promising candidate for mitigating p-cresol detoxification in uremic patients.

Abstract Random subspaces $X$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ of dimension proportional to $n$ are, with high probability, well-spread with respect to the $\ell_2$-norm. Namely, every nonzero $x \in X$ is "robustly non-sparse" in the following sense: $x$ is $\varepsilon \|x\|_2$-far in $\ell_2$-distance from all $\delta n$-sparse vectors, for positive constants $\varepsilon, \delta$ bounded away from $0$. This "$\ell_2$-spread" property is the natural counterpart, for subspaces over the reals, of the minimum distance of linear codes over finite fields, and corresponds to $X$ being a Euclidean section of the $\ell_1$ unit ball. Explicit $\ell_2$-spread subspaces of dimension $\Omega(n)$, however, are unknown, and the best known constructions (which achieve weaker spread properties), are analogs of low density parity check (LDPC) codes over the reals, i.e., they are kernels of sparse matrices. We study the spread properties of the kernels of sparse random matrices. Rather surprisingly, we prove that with high probability such subspaces contain vectors $x$ that are $o(1)\cdot \|x\|_2$-close to $o(n)$-sparse with respect to the $\ell_2$-norm, and in particular are not $\ell_2$-spread. On the other hand, for $p < 2$ we prove that such subspaces are $\ell_p$-spread with high probability. Moreover, we show that a random sparse matrix has the stronger restricted isometry property (RIP) with respect to the $\ell_p$ norm, and this follows solely from the unique expansion of a random biregular graph, yielding a somewhat unexpected generalization of a similar result for the $\ell_1$ norm [BGI+08]. Instantiating this with explicit expanders, we obtain the first explicit constructions of $\ell_p$-RIP matrices for $1 \leq p < p_0$, where $1 < p_0 < 2$ is an absolute constant.

Abstract The hypoglycemia induced by insulin hypersecretion in congenital hyperinsulinemia (CHI), a rare life-threatening condition can lead to irreversible brain damage in neonates. Inactivating mutations in the genes encoding KATP channel (ABCC8 and KCNJ11) as well as HNF4A, HNF1A, HADH, UCP2, and activating mutations in GLUD1, GCK, and SLC16A1 have been identified as causal. A 3-month-old male infant presenting tonic-clonic seizures and hyperinsulinemia was clinically assessed and subjected to genetic analysis. Besides the index patient, his parents were clinically investigated, and a detailed family history was also recorded. The laboratory investigations and the genetic test results of the parents were compared with the index patient. The biochemical and hormonal profile of the patient confirmed his suffering from CHI and did not respond to diazoxide treatment. The genetic testing revealed that the subject harbored a novel homozygous missense mutation in the KCNJ11 gene, (c.107T>A, p.Val36Glu.). The bioinformatic analysis revealed that valine is highly conserved and predicted that the variant allele (p.Val36Glu) is likely pathogenic and causal for CHI. Parents were heterozygous carriers and did not report any abnormal metabolic profile. Identification of such mutations is critical and likely to change the therapeutic interventions for such patients in the future.

Abstract We prove that the Minimum Distance Problem (MDP) on linear codes over any fixed finite field and parameterized by the input distance bound is W[1]-hard to approximate within any constant factor. We also prove analogous results for the parameterized Shortest Vector Problem (SVP) on integer lattices. Specifically, we prove that SVP in the $\ell_p$ norm is W[1]-hard to approximate within any constant factor for any fixed $p >1$ and W[1]-hard to approximate within a factor approaching $2$ for $p=1$. (We show hardness under randomized reductions in each case.) These results answer the main questions left open (and explicitly posed) by Bhattacharyya, Bonnet, Egri, Ghoshal, Karthik C. S., Lin, Manurangsi, and Marx (Journal of the ACM, 2021) on the complexity of parameterized MDP and SVP. For MDP, they established similar hardness for binary linear codes and left the case of general fields open. For SVP in $\ell_p$ norms with $p > 1$, they showed inapproximability within some constant factor (depending on $p$) and left open showing such hardness for arbitrary constant factors. They also left open showing W[1]-hardness even of exact SVP in the $\ell_1$ norm.
