Title translation Association of inflammatory genes with neuroticism, anxiety and depression in male patients with coronary heart disease.
Abstract Aim: To explore the relationship of depression and its endophenotypes (neuroticism and trait anxiety) with inflammatory genes in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD).
Material and methods: A sample consisted of 78 male CHD patients with depression, 91 CHD patients without depression and 127 healthy men. Polymorphisms of the genes encoding interleukine-4 (IL-4 -589 C/T), interleukine-6 (IL-6 -174 G/C), tumor-necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α -308 G/A) and C-reactive protein (CRP -717A/G) were studied.
Results: There was the association between the IL-6 -174 G/C and depression comorbid to CHD (р=0.01; OR=2.3 CI 95% 1.2-4.3). The frequency of the 'high expression' allele G in this group was higher compared to controls. The association between IL-4 -589 C/T and CHD was found. Compared to the control group, the frequency of the IL-4 -589CC genotype was higher in patients regardless of whether they had symptoms of depression (р=0.007; OR=2.1 CI 95% 1.2-3.4). No association between the TNF-α -308G/A and the CRP -717A/G with depression in CHD was observed. There were no differences between neuroticism and anxiety scores in patients with different IL-4 -589 C/T, IL-6 -174 G/C, TNF-α -308 G/A, CRP -717A/G genotypes.
Conclusion: The finding of the association between the IL-6 -174G/C and depression, comorbid to CHD, is in line with literature on a role of IL-6 in the development of depression in patients with CHD.

Title translation Genetic variations associated with premorbid personality in patients with schizophrenia.
Abstract Aim: To search for genetic variants associated with premorbid personality in patients with schizophrenia.
Material and methods: The sample included 272 men diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Patients were divided into 3 groups based on premorbid personality difficulties: mild (group 1, n=110), moderate (group 2, n=113), marked (group 3, n=49). The following polymorphisms were genotyped: 5-HTR2A (T102C), 5-HTTLPR, BDNF (Val66Met), CRP (-717A>G).
Results: A significant increase in the frequency of the CC (5-HTR2A T102C), LL (5-HTTLPR) and Met/Met (BDNF Val66Met) genotypes was identified in group 3 compared to group 1. Frequencies of CC and LL genotypes were significantly higher in group 2 compared to group 1 as well. The differences between group 2 and group 3 were found only for the Met/Met genotype. There were no between-group differences in the frequencies of CRP (-717A>G) genotypes.
Conclusion: 5-HTR2A (T102C), 5-HTTLPR, BDNF (Val66Met) polymorphisms previously reported to modify schizophrenia course are also associated with premorbid personality in schizophrenic patients.

Title translation A method of treating purulent corneal ulcer in the eyes with neuroparalytical keratitis and lagophthalmos.
Abstract Purpose: To develop a method for treatment of advanced purulent corneal ulcers in eyes with neurotrophic keratitis that developed as a complication of intracranial pathological processes or brain surgeries.
Material and methods: The study involved 13 patients (14 eyes) that underwent combined surgery - keratoplasty, autoconjunctival flap covering, partial tarsorrhaphy performed simultaneously. Before and after the surgery, patients received frequent instillations of antimicrobial agents and autologous serum.
Results: The organ of vision was preserved in all patients, visual function - in 50% of cases, it improved in 35.7% of cases from 0.07±0.05 to 0.26±0.11. Lagophthalmos has decreased from 6.11±0.99 to 2.78±0.62 mm.
Conclusion: Patients with intracranial lesions and complicated by neurotrophic keratitis and lagophthalmos often develop advanced severe and progressive corneal purulent ulcers, which seldom respond to the most active conservative therapy. Simultaneous surgery that includes keratoplasty, auto conjunctival flap covering and partial superficial tarsorrhaphy is an effective treatment option that helps preserve visual function in such eyes.

Title translation Analysis of comprehensive treatment of oral leukoplakia by laser ablation.
Abstract The article presents data statistics of surgical treatment of leukoplakia by laser ablation for 2014 were examined and operated on 12 patients with verrucous and erosive forms of leukoplakia of the oral mucosa using a diode laser. Only 5 (42%) showed positive results in 7 (58%) patients had recurrent disease, often in the localization of the lesion on the tongue. It is possible that relapse may be associated with incomplete excision of the lesion due to anatomical and morphological features of the oral mucosa in various topographical areas. The study emphasizes the need to find alternative methods of modern surgical excision, one of which can be radiofrequency excision.

Title translation Novel approach to treatment of lagophthalmos-associated neuroparalytic keratitis.
Abstract Unlabelled: Aim - to develop effective treatment approaches to lagophthalmos-associated neuroparalytic keratitis.
Material and methods: A total of 34 patients (36 eyes) with neuroparalytic keratitis were enrolled. Group 1 consisted of 20 patients (21 eyes), in whom autoconjunctivoplasty was performed in combination with eyelid surgery. Group 2 consisted of 12 lagophthalmic patients (13 eyes) with purulent corneal ulcers, who additionally underwent corneal transplantation. Group 3 included 2 patients (2 eyes) with central corneal ulcer in the only seeing eye, who received, besides other things, upper sector iridectomy intended to serve as a pupil (RU 2299048 with priority date of 15.07.2005).
Results: In group 1, corneal re-epithelization and complete recovery was achieved in all patients within 3.00±0.69 weeks. Visual acuity (VA) has generally increased over the first year after treatment from 0.14±0.06 to 0.25±0.13 in group 1 and from 0.09±0.05 to 0.21±0.13 in group 2. In group 3, sector iridectomies also yielded an increase in VA - from 0.01 to 0.02 in one case and from 0.2 to 0.6 in the other. Autoconjunctivoplasty enabled rapid and stable re-epithelization of corneal defects in all cases.
Conclusion: One-stage corneal and eyelid surgery has been shown to be more effective in treating lagophthalmos-associated neuroparalytic keratitis than previous methods. The novel approach ensures acute symptoms of keratitis resolve and the eye is saved, moreover, it allows to maintain visual acuity and prevent recurrences in 64% and 65% of patients, respectively.

Title translation Penetrating keratoplasty in keratoconus by using the method of intraoperative corneal compression.
Abstract The authors suggested the method of intraoperative dot-type keratocompression to localize the zones of ectasia in keratoconus. Corneocompression is made before corneal transplantation under the monitoring of the operation microscope by a special corneocompressor (from the keratoconus top to its periphery). The sagging degree of the examined corneal portion proportionate to its thinning is in the focus of attention. Simultaneously, the ectasia zone is marked by a 1% solution of brilliant green, after which a decision is made on the possibility of its radical incision by trepans of various sizes, ranging from 7.5 to 11 mm. Penetrating keratoplasty was made by using this method in 116 patients (147 eyes) with keratoconus of degrees III-IV according to Amsler. Better refractive results, including a higher visual acuity and a lower degree of postoperative astigmatism in long-term follow-ups ranging from 2 to 12 years, were ensured in the main group (77 patients, 93 eyes) versus the control group (39 patients, 54 eyes). Finally, the authors suggested, on the basis of their own experience, an operational classification of keratoconus.

Title translation Conduit drainage and preserved amnion in pathologies of the cornea concomitant with glaucoma.
Abstract The authors improved the anterior-chamber bypass technique implemented simultaneously with reconstructive penetrating keratoplasty or with trabeculotomy in order to enhance the efficiency of antiglaucomatous drainage surgeries in organic lesions of the anterior segment of the eye combined with active inflammatory processes in it and concomitant with secondary glaucoma. The use of conduit drainage was supplemented with wrapping the distal end with conserved amnion, which prevented the postoperative obstruction of drainage or its heading in the outward direction. Amnion, exceeding the size of the scleral flap, was placed in trabeculotomy with active inflammatory signs between scleral strata, thus, preventing an excessive postoperative scarring. A total of 45 patients were operated on with the follow-up reaching 3 years. The efficiency of antiglaucomatous interventions made up 88-93% of cases. The suggested new drainage techniques with conserved amnion can be successfully used surgeries combined with keratoplasty as well as in independently in secondary glaucomas of various etiologies and in primary refractive glaucoma.

Abstract The role of lactate in the brain has been controversial. In this issue, Mächler et al. (2015) present data from in vivo experiments suggesting that there is a downward gradient of lactate in the brain. They provide a mechanistic basis for the proposed export of lactate from astrocytes to neurons.

Abstract Aim: To study the predominant serum responses (antibodies IgG, IgA, IgE) against H. pylori in relation to the indicators of the system “lipid peroxidation−antioxidant system” in various pathogenetic variants of chronic gastritis (CG). Materials and Methods: Sixty patients with CG, 33 patients with chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and 31 patients with chronic allergic gastritis (CALG) were examined. The values of the system of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant protection in plasma were determined in the serum of patients using a spectrophotometric method. Statistical data processing was carried out using the Statistica 7.0 software package (StatSoft, Tulsa, OK, USA). Results: With serum responses “antibodies IgG > IgA” and “high concentrations of IgE antibodies”, we found unidirectional changes in the form of an increase in the amount of diene conjugates, malondialdehyde and an increase in the activity of all enzymes: superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase and glutathione peroxidase. With a serum response with low concentrations of IgG, IgA antibodies, multidirectional changes were found in the form of an increase in the amount of diene conjugates, malondialdehyde and a decrease in the activity of all enzymes: superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase and glutathione peroxidase relative to the control group. Conclusions: The obtained data testify to the balance of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system processes and depend on the characteristics of the immune response to H. pylori infection.

Abstract Lactate is a universal metabolite produced and released by all cells in the body. Traditionally it was viewed as energy currency that is generated from pyruvate at the end of the glycolytic pathway and sent into the extracellular space for other cells to take up and consume. In the brain, such a mechanism was postulated to operate between astrocytes and neurons many years ago. Later, the discovery of lactate receptors opened yet another chapter in the quest to understand lactate actions. Other ideas, such as modulation of NMDA receptors were also proposed. Up to this day, we still do not have a consensus view on the relevance of any of these mechanisms to brain functions or their contribution to human or animal physiology. While the field develops new ideas, in this brief review we analyze some recently published studies in order to focus on some unresolved controversies and highlight the limitations that need to be addressed in future work. Clearly, only by using similar and overlapping methods, cross-referencing experiments, and perhaps collaborative efforts, we can finally understand what the role of lactate in the brain is and why this ubiquitous molecule is so important.
