Abstract This study analyzed global data on epidemic control measures and economic conditions in different countries during different mutant strain epidemic periods, including the Alpha, Delta, and Omicron strains. The study estimated the elasticity coefficient through a log-log model, which represents the percent change of the confirmed case number with respect to a percent change in the total number of screening tests in a country for epidemic control. The 7-day rolling data of screening tests and confirmed cases from the Our World in Data database for the pandemic periods of Alpha strain in 2020, Delta strain in 2021, and Omicron strain in 2022, suggest that the magnitude of the elasticity was associated with the economic condition of a country. Compared with the results during either Alpha or Delta pandemic period, the Omicron pandemic has a much higher estimated elasticity coefficient of 1.317 (Alpha: 0.827 and Delta: 0.885). Further examining economic conditions categorized by quartile ranges, the results indicate that the elasticity is statistically significantly lower in countries with gross domestic product (GDP) per capita between $11,354 and $26,651, and in countries with GDP per capita above $26,651 than in countries with GDP per capita below $3,335. These results suggest that countries should consider not only epidemiological measures but also economic conditions when formulating epidemic control strategies. This study highlights the importance of assessing the appropriateness of epidemic control strategies within a country and provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of such strategies, particularly in the context of community screening.

Abstract This article provides a novel analysis using the Global Social Mobility Index (GSMI) in order to explore whether the relationship between income inequality and life satisfaction differs depending on the level of social mobility. Unlike typical social mobility proxies, such as intergenerational persistence in education, the GSMI (by the World Economic Forum) views mobility as a broad concept which captures both quantity and quality which results in a more precise measure. Using a cross-country panel dataset (143 countries, 2005–2020), the main results indicate that, overall, a higher level of income inequality is related with a lower national average life satisfaction. Furthermore, the findings support the tunnel effect hypothesis showing that the negative relationship between income inequality and life satisfaction is more prevalent in groups with lower social mobility. The contributions of this study are devoted to the area of wellbeing policy development. Policies aimed at promoting income equality are recommended to improve the overall life satisfaction of citizens, especially for countries with low social mobility.

Abstract Subjective wellbeing maximization is a possible goal of government or public policies, and it is often considered the goal of individual life. This paper proposes an estimation using the Wellbeing Valuation Approach (WVA) to estimate the monetized effect of trust in government. Using a cross-country panel data set for 97 countries in the period from 2011 to 2019, we arrive at three main findings. First, there is a positive relationship between trust in national government and average life satisfaction. Second, trust in the national government has a global median value of Intl$ 5649 per person a year in foregone income. Third, trust affects life satisfaction directly as well as indirectly through per capita GDP. This indirect effect is considered relatively small compared to the direct effect, being approximately six times smaller. This study contributes to the policy evaluation literature by providing an evaluation of trust in government to be used as a proxy to plan future investment or policy assessment.

Abstract The number of homebound and bedridden elderly has been increasing in Thailand, as the aging population rapidly grows and rates of chronic diseases increase. However, decreasing family size may reflect a decline in the ability of families to provide care. Society, as a result, enhances the need for long-term care (LTC) policy to provide home care and social support for the homebound and bedridden elderly. This paper examines how care-receipt satisfaction in LTC impacts the homebound and bedridden elderly's overall happiness, using a two-year panel of 279 individuals from the Thai Health Promotion Foundation dataset. We use the pooled two-stage least square (Pooled-2SLS) model and random effect two-stage least square (RE-2SLS) model to control the endogeneity problem. The empirical results show that care-receipt satisfaction on LTC service can generate a positive impact on the overall happiness of the homebound and bedridden elderly.

Abstract Background: Vegetarian diets have been shown to lower the risks of hyperuricemia and gout. Little is known about the risk factors of hyperuricemia in vegetarians.
Methods: This community-based retrospective case-control study was conducted to establish prediction models for hyperuricemia. From September 5, 2005, to December 31, 2016, 7331 adult vegetarians were recruited at Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital. Hyperuricemia was defined as a serum uric acid concentration greater than 7 mg/dL.
Results: There were 593 (8.1%) vegetarians with hyperuricemia and 6738 (91.9%) without hyperuricemia. We stepwise built up three models for predicting hyperuricemia in vegetarians. The full model (model 3) has the highest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC, 85.52%). Additionally, the AUROC of model 3 is 77.97% and 84.85% in vegetarians with or without prior gout history, respectively. Moreover, male gender, hyperlipidemia, body mass index, and serum albumin are independent risk factors for hyperuricemia in vegetarians. In contrast, estimated glomerular filtration rate and proteinuria are independently associated with lower risks of hyperuricemia in vegetarians.
Conclusion: Our study revealed that risk factors for hyperuricemia, which includes clinical characteristics, account for more than 85% of discriminatory performance in Taiwanese vegetarians. This model may be helpful for monitoring and preventing hyperuricemia in the population.
