    Abstract The risk of healthcare associated infections (HAI) is rising with the utilization of more complex medical devices. Cleaning and disinfecting measures of such devices are often insufficient leading to an increased microbiological contamination on these devices. Recent studies imply that antimicrobial coatings could present a solution for this topic. In this work a novel approach for the introduction of an antimicrobial technology into plastic granulate was tested. After 3-D printing the antimicrobial activity of the test samples was analysed. Our results show that the integration of an antimicrobial substance to ABS plastic is feasible only with sophisticated plastic processing technologies. Simple heating or mixing of the substance did not allow integration of the antimicrobial substance into the 3-D printed sample, but it was possible to integrate the antimicrobial ingredient into the raw material by compounding. The printed test samples showed strong antimicrobial activity in the standardized test procedures.

    Abstract The kodaistatins A-D are strongly anti-diabetic natural products from Aspergillus terreus that hold some promise of a novel diabetes cure. However, considerations of that kind face two drawbacks: 1) The kodaistatins A-D contain a heavily substituted pulvinone/cyclopentenone combination; 2) they are 1,2-diols, the 3D structures of which have not been assigned yet. However, we can exclude two of the four possible stereostructures. We conclude that kodaistatin A is a trans-, not a cis-diol from NMR comparisons with a pair of cis, trans-isomeric kodaistatin models, which we synthesized in 11 and 12 steps, respectively. The stereocenters of the diol moiety arose from stereocomplementary, highly diastereoselective aldol additions of a lithium enolate or the corresponding silyl ketene acetal. The cyclopentenone moieties stemmed from intramolecular aldol additions and ensuing dehydrations. The requisite enolates were obtained by the reduction of α-bromoketones with samarium diiodide.

    Abstract The relative amounts of free D-amino acids (D-AA) in the urine of seven healthy volunteers (age 27 to 49 years) were determined using chiral phase (Chirasil-L-Val) capillary gas chromatography in conjunction with selected ion monitoring mass spectrometry. The absolute amounts of free D-AA were determined by pre-column derivatization of the amino acids witho-phthaldialdehyde andN-isobutyryl-L-cysteine followed by high-performance liquid chromatographic separation and fluorescence detection of the isoindol derivatives formed. The following most abundant D-AA were found (highest and lowest absolute and relative amounts): D-Ser (379.8 - 30.1µMol/L; 56.5 - 19.0%), D-Ala (53.8 - 7.6µMol/L; 19.6 - 5.7%), D-Thr (5.8 - 0.25µMol/L; 3.4 - 1.0%), D-Val (3.7 - 0µMol/L; 4.2 - 0%), and D-Phe (3.5 - 0.35µMol/L; 4.8 - 1.4%).
