    Abstract Purpose: To describe a new and less risky technique for the cleaning of posterior capsule during phacoemulsification called passive cap vac.
    Method: Passive cap vac consisted in the removal of residual posterior capsule opacities using a disconnected 0.3 mm aspiration cannula. The hole of the aspiration cannula was faced toward posterior capsule and gently rubbed against it to achieve a complete cleaning of posterior capsule. The video of the technique is available online.
    Result: With this new technique, the aspiration was ruled by the gravity and by the height of the balanced saline solution (BSS), in addition the Venturi's effect and the absence of active aspiration beyond the cannula avoided an excessive aspiration of posterior capsule.
    Conclusion: Passive cap vac allowed to clean posterior capsule using softer forces than traditional way, minimizing the risk of capsular tear.

    Abstract Background and objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a widespread cardiac arrhythmia that significantly impacts heart function. AF disrupts atrial mechanical contraction, leading to irregular, uncoordinated, and slow blood flow inside the atria which favors the formation of clots, primarily within the left atrium (LA). A standardized region-based analysis of the LA is missing, and there is not even any consensus about how to define the LA regions. In this study we propose an automatic approach for regionalizing the LA into segments to provide a comprehensive 3D region-based LA contraction assessment. LA global and regional contraction were quantified in control subjects and in AF patients to describe mechanical abnormalities associated with AF.
    Methods: The proposed automatic approach for LA regionalization was tested in thirteen control subjects and seventeen AF patients. After dividing LA into standard regions, we evaluated the global and regional mechanical function by measuring LA contraction parameters, such as regional volume, global and regional strains, regional wall motion and regional shortening fraction.
    Results: LA regionalization was successful in all study subjects. In the AF group compared with control subjects, results showed: a global impairment of LA contraction which appeared more pronounced along radial and circumferential direction; a regional impairment of radial strain which was more pronounced in septal, inferior, and lateral regions suggesting a greater reduction in mechanical efficiency in these regions in comparison to the posterior and anterior ones.
    Conclusion: An automatic approach for LA regionalization was proposed. The regionalization method was proved to be robust with several LA anatomical variations and able to characterize contraction changes associated with AF.

    Abstract The interphase genome of vertebrates contains roughly 100 000 dynamic loops formed by cohesins. These loops are thought to play important roles in many functions, but their exact contribution in each case remains hotly disputed. The key challenge in studying these loops is the lack of a single experimental technique that could reliably and comprehensively visualize their locations and dynamics. Yet, we can infer them using theoretical models that integrate complementary experimental observations. Modeling proved instrumental in showing that cohesins form loops via extrusion. The loop extrusion model made numerous successful qualitative and quantitative predictions and inspired many experiments. However, it also demonstrated limited accuracy in predicting contact maps. Recent research suggests that the original model did not fully account for the intricate details of the mechanism of loop extrusion and its complex regulation. Here, we review the progress in visualizing extrusion and characterizing the cohesin cofactors. These discoveries can be summarized as 'rules' of cohesin movement along chromosomes and incorporated into the next generation of models. Such improved models will enable more accurate inferences of positions and dynamics of cohesin loops and generate better predictions for designing experiments.

    Abstract In an investigation of pharmaceutical contamination in the Lac du Flambeau Chain of Lakes (hereafter referred to as "the Chain"), few contaminants were detected; only eight pharmaceuticals and one pesticide were identified among the 110 pharmaceuticals and other organic contaminants monitored in surface water samples. This study, conducted in cooperation with the Lac du Flambeau Tribe's Water Resource Program, investigated these organic contaminants and potential biological effects in channels connecting lakes throughout the Chain, including the Moss Lake Outlet site, adjacent to the wastewater treatment plant lagoon. Of the 6 sites monitored and 24 samples analyzed, sample concentrations and contaminant detection frequencies were greatest at the Moss Lake Outlet site; however, the concentrations and detection frequencies of this study were comparable to other pharmaceutical investigations in basins with similar characteristics. Because established water-quality benchmarks do not exist for the pharmaceuticals detected in this study, alternative screening-level water-quality benchmarks, developed using two U.S. Environmental Protection Agency toxicological resources (ToxCast database and ECOTOX knowledgebase), were used to estimate potential biological effects associated with the observed contaminant concentrations. Two contaminants (caffeine and thiabendazole) exceeded the prioritization threshold according to ToxCast alternative benchmarks, and four contaminants (acetaminophen, atrazine, caffeine, and carbamazepine) exceeded the prioritization threshold according to ECOTOX alternative benchmarks. Atrazine, an herbicide, was the most frequently detected contaminant (79% of samples), and it exhibited the strongest potential for biological effects due to its high estimated potency. Insufficient toxicological information within ToxCast and ECOTOX for gabapentin and methocarbamol (which had the two greatest concentrations in this study) precluded alternative benchmark development. This data gap presents unknown potential environmental impacts. Future research examining the biological effects elicited by these two contaminants as well as the others detected in this study would further elucidate the ecological relevance of the water chemistry results generated though this investigation.

    Abstract In the digital age, the widespread presence of electronic devices has exposed humans to an exceptional amount of blue light (BL) emitted from screens, LEDs, and other sources. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to BL could have harmful effects on the visual system and circadian rhythm regulation. BL is known to induce oxidative stress, leading to DNA damage. Emerging research indicates that BL may also induce cell death pathways that involve the tumor-suppressor protein p53. Activated p53 acts as a transcription factor to regulate the expression of genes involved in cell cycle arrest, DNA repair, and apoptosis. This study aimed to explore the implication of p53 in BL-caused retinal damage, shedding light on the potential mechanisms of oxidative-stress-induced retinal diseases. BL-exposed porcine retinal cultures demonstrated increased p53- and caspase-mediated apoptosis, depending on exposure duration. Direct inhibition of p53 via pifithrin α resulted in the prevention of retinal cell death. These findings raise concerns about the long-term consequences of the current daily BL exposure and its potential involvement in various pathological conditions, including oxidative-stress-based retinal diseases like age-related macular degeneration. In addition, this study paves the way for the development of novel therapeutic approaches for oxidative-stress-based retinal diseases.

    Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the magnitude of IOL transversal shift (ITS) after phacoemulsification and to analyse the factors contributing to IOL decentration and ITS.
    Methods: 94 consecutive patients who underwent cataract surgery and IOL implantation was enrolled. Each patient underwent anterior segment optical coherence tomography with CASIA 2 (Tomey, Nagoya, Japan) to assess crystalline lens decentration, thickness and diameter seven days preoperatively and at one and sixty days postoperatively. Univariate and multivariate linear regression analysis were performed to evaluate the determinants of ITS and final decentration.
    Results: The preoperative crystalline lens diameter was associated with the ITS and with the IOL final decentration. A positive association between the final IOL decentration and the first post-surgical day decentration was found (p < 0.0001).
    Conclusion: Greater crystalline lens diameter was associated with greater decentration and with greater ITS. Day-one IOL decentration seems to be the main determinant of final IOL decentration.
