Abstract This article describes the synthesis and photophysical properties of Aggregation-Induced Emission (enhancement) luminogens derivated from CinNaphts dyes. These fluorophores can be obtained in good yields in a single SNAr step of a fluorinated CinNapht derivative by incorporating hindered aromatic amines. They exhibit AIE(E) behavior associated with solid-state fluorescence covering an emission range from 563 to 722 nm. One carbazole derivative demonstrates a remarkable efficiency in imaging lipid droplets in living cells through an original photophysical mechanism.

Abstract Background and objectives: Data on urinary tract infections (UTIs) in very preterm neonates (VPTNs) are scarce. We aimed to (i) describe the characteristics of UTIs in VPTNs and (ii) compare the diagnostic practices of neonatal clinicians to established pediatric guidelines.
Methods: All VPTNs (<29 weeks GA) with a suspected UTI at the CHU Sainte-Justine neonatal intensive care unit from January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2019, were included and divided into two definition categories: Possible UTI, and Definite UTI.
Results: Most episodes were Possible UTI (87%). Symptoms of UTIs and pathogens varied based on the definition category. A positive urinalysis was obtained in 25%. Possible UTI episodes grew 2 organisms in 62% of cases and <50,000 CFU/mL in 62% of cases.
Conclusion: Characteristics of UTIs in VPTNs vary based on the definition category and case definitions used by clinicians differ from that of established pediatric guidelines.

Abstract Endoreduplication is the major source of somatic endopolyploidy in higher plants, and leads to variation in cell ploidy levels due to iterative rounds of DNA synthesis in the absence of mitosis. Despite its ubiquitous occurrence in many plant organs, tissues, and cells, the physiological meaning of endoreduplication is not fully understood, although several roles during plant development have been proposed, mostly related to cell growth, differentiation, and specialization via transcriptional and metabolic reprogramming. Here, we review recent advances in our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms and cellular characteristics of endoreduplicated cells, and provide an overview of the multi-scale effects of endoreduplication on supporting growth in plant development. In addition, the effects of endoreduplication in fruit development are discussed, since it is highly prominent during fruit organogenesis where it acts as a morphogenetic factor supporting rapid fruit growth, as illustrated by case of the model fleshy fruit, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum).

Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem in all countries due to its high human and economic burden. Major metabolic alterations are associated with the chronic hyperglycemia that characterizes diabetes and causes devastating complications, including retinopathy, kidney failure, coronary disease and increased cardiovascular mortality. The most common form is type 2 diabetes (T2D) accounting for 90 to 95% of the cases. These chronic metabolic disorders are heterogeneous to which genetic factors contribute, but so do prenatal and postnatal life environmental factors including a sedentary lifestyle, overweight, and obesity. However, these classical risk factors alone cannot explain the rapid evolution of the prevalence of T2D and the high prevalence of type 1 diabetes in particular areas. Among environmental factors, we are in fact exposed to a growing amount of chemical molecules produced by our industries or by our way of life. In this narrative review, we aim to give a critical overview of the role of these pollutants that can interfere with our endocrine system, the so-called endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), in the pathophysiology of diabetes and metabolic disorders.
