Abstract Rehabilitation is a crucial part of recovery for stroke survivors, and numerous studies have examined various exercises and treatments of stroke. In addition, it is very important for patients to choose the timing of rehabilitation and what kind of rehabilitation they will proceed with. The purpose of the current study is to examine research investigating the effects of rehabilitation exercise programs in recovery of physical function in patients with stroke, based on aspects of their physical function, physical strength, and daily activities, and systematically examine their effects. Therefore, through systematic review, we have investigated the effects of interventions in rehabilitation exercise programs for recovery of physical function in patients with stroke. We collected relevant publications through the databases MEDLINE/PubMed and Google scholar. Twenty-one articles were ultimately selected for the analysis. We classified the rehabilitation programs and identified the trends of treatment for stroke survivors. Our review indicated that task-oriented therapy is still dominant, but various types of combined rehabilitations have been attempted. In addition, it was identified that physical and active rehabilitation were required rather than unconditional rest, even at an early stage. Home-based treatment was used for rapid recovery and adaptation to daily life during the mid-term period.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of viral agents causing reproductive failure in pigs in Korea. In addition, two types of multiplex real-time PCR (mqPCR) were developed for the simultaneous detection of Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV) and porcine parvovirus (PPV) in mqPCR and encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in reverse transcription mqPCR (mRT-qPCR). A total of 150 aborted fetus samples collected from 2020 to 2022 were analyzed. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus was the most prevalent (49/150 32.7%), followed by porcine circovirus type 2 (31/150, 20.7%), and PPV1 (7/150, 4.7%), whereas ADV, EMCV, and JEV were not detected. The newly developed mqPCR and mRT-qPCR could simultaneously detect and differentiate with high sensitivities and specificities. When applied to aborted fetuses, the newly developed mqPCR for PPV was 33.3% more sensitivities than the previously established diagnostic method. Amino acid analysis of the VP2 sequences of PPV isolates revealed considerable similarity to the highly pathogenic Kresse strain. This study successfully evaluated the prevalence of viral agents causing reproductive failure among swine in Korea, the developed mqPCR and mRT-qPCR methods could be utilized as effective and accurate diagnostic methods for the epidemiological surveillance of ADV, PPV, EMCV, and JEV.

Abstract Owing to increasing air pollution due to industrial development, fine dust has been associated with threatening public health. In particular, ultrafine urban particulate matter (uf-UP, PM 0.1) can easily enter our bodies, causing inflammation-related diseases. Therefore, in the present study, we evaluated the effects of hydrothermal extracts of Sargassum horneri and its bioactive compound, loliolide, on uf-UP-induced inflammation as a potential treatment strategy for retinal disorders. Human retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19) stimulated with TNF-α or uf-UPs were treated with S. horneri extract and loliolide. S. horneri extracts exhibited anti-inflammatory effects on uf-UP-induced inflammation without cell toxicity through downregulating the mRNA expression of MCP-1 , IL-8 , IL-6 , and TNF-α . UPLC-QTOF/MS analysis confirmed that the hydrothermal extract of S. horneri contained loliolide, which has anti-inflammatory effects. Loliolide effectively reduced the mRNA expression and production of proinflammatory chemokines ( IL-8 ) and cytokines ( IL-1β and IL-6 ) by downregulating the MAPK/NF-ĸB signaling pathway on TNF-α-stimulated inflammatory ARPE-19 cells. These effects were further confirmed in inflammatory ARPE-19 cells after stimulation with uf-UPs. Collectively, these results suggested the application of S. horneri as a functional ingredient for treating ocular disorders caused by particular matters.

Abstract Objectives: Currently, no approved stem cell-based therapies for preserving ovarian function during aging. To solve this problem, we developed a long-term treatment for human embryonic stem cell-derived mesenchymal progenitor cells (hESC-MPCs). We investigated whether the cells retained their ability to resist ovarian aging, which leads to delayed reproductive senescence.
Materials and methods: In a middle-aged female model undergoing natural aging, we analyzed whether hESC-MPCs benefit the long-term maintenance of reproductive fecundity and ovarian reservoirs and how their transplantation regulates ovarian function.
Results: The number of primordial follicles and mice with regular estrous cycles were increased in perimenopausal mice who underwent multiple introductions of hESC-MPCs compared to age-matched controls. The estradiol levels in the hESC-MPCs group were restored to those in the young and adult groups. Embryonic development and live birth rates were higher in the hESC-MPC group than in the control group, suggesting that hESC-MPCs delayed ovarian senescence. In addition to their direct effects on the ovary, multiple-treatments with hESC-MPCs reduced ovarian fibrosis by downregulating inflammation and fibrosis-related genes via the suppression of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) produced in the bone marrow.
Conclusions: Multiple introductions of hESC-MPCs could be a useful approach to prevent female reproductive senescence and that these cells are promising sources for cell therapy to postpone the ovarian aging and retain fecundity in perimenopausal women.

Abstract Background: Previous studies have suggested that platelets are associated with inflammation and steatosis and may play an important role in liver health. Therefore, we evaluated whether antiplatelet agents can improve metabolic disorder-related fatty liver disease (MASLD).
Methods: The mice used in the study were fed a high-fat-diet (HFD) and were stratified through liver biopsy at 18 weeks. A total of 22 mice with NAFLD activity scores (NAS) ≥ 4 were randomly divided into three groups (HFD-only, clopidogrel (CLO; 35 mg/kg/day), ticagrelor (TIC; 40 mg/kg/day) group). And then, they were fed a feed mixed with the respective drug for 15 weeks. Blood and tissue samples were collected and used in the study.
Results: The TIC group showed a significantly lower degree of NAS and steatosis than the HFD group (
Conclusion: Ticagrelor attenuated NAS and hepatic steatosis in a MASLD mice model by attenuating lipogenesis and inflammation, but not in the CLO group.

Abstract Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is an inherited autosomal-dominant tumor-predisposition disorder caused by germline mutations in the TP53 tumor suppressor gene. Since patients with LFS are likely to develop therapy-related cancers, radiation therapy should be avoided if breast cancer is found in these individuals. Herein, we present a case of secondary breast cancer in an LFS patient after radiation and chemotherapy for the first diagnosed breast sarcoma.
