    Abstract We report a measurement of the branching fractions of B-->D**(l) nu(l), decays based on 417 fb(-1) of data collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- storage rings. Events are selected by full reconstructing one of the B mesons in a hadronic decay mode. A fit to the invariant mass differences m(D(*) pi)- m(D(*)) is performed to extract the signal yields of the different D** states. We observe the B-->D**l(-1)nu(l) decay modes corresponding to the four D states predicted by heavy quark symmetry with a significance greater than 5 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties.

Events are tagged by fully reconstructing one of the B mesons in a hadronic decay mode. We obtain B(B- -->D(0)l-_nu(l)=(2.33+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.09(syst)%, B(B- -->D(*0)l-_nu(l)=(5.83+/-0.15(stat) +/-0.30(syst) %, B(_B(0)-->D+l-_nu(l)=(2.21+/-0.11(stat) +/-0.12(syst)%, B(_B(0)-->D(*)l-_nu(l)=(5.49+/-0.16(stat)+/-0.25(syst)%, B(B- -->D+pi-l-_nu(l)=(0.42+/-0.06(stat)+/-0.03(syst)%, B(B- -->D(*)+pi-l-_nu(l)=(0.59+/-0.05(stat)+/-0.04(syst)%, B(_B(0)-->D(0)pi+l-_nu(l)=(0.43+/-0.08(stat)+/-0.03(syst)%, and B(_B(0)-->D(*0)pi+l-_nu(l)=(0.48+/-0.08(stat)+/-0.04(syst)%.

    Abstract The B(0) lifetime was measured with a sample of 23 million BB pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e(+)e(-) storage ring during 1999 and 2000. Events from the semileptonic decay B(0)-->D(*-)l(+)nu(l) have been selected with a partial reconstruction method in which only the charged lepton and the slow pi from the D*--->D(0)pi(-) decay are reconstructed. The result is tau(B(0)) = 1.529+/-0.012(stat)+/-0.029(syst) ps.

The two isomers are readily distinguished by their 1H NMR spectra.

    Abstract A procedure for the determination of the ratio of d- to l-epinephrine in lidocaine-epinephrine local anesthetics is described. Epinephrine was isolated via Sep-Pak cartridges and derivatized with 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-beta-D-glucopyranosyl isothiocyanate; the d- and l-chiral derivatives were separated and measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. About 70 samples of various dosage forms and concentrations from four manufacturers were successfully analyzed by the method.

    Abstract 1. delta-(L-alpha-Amino[4,5-3H]adipyl)-L-cysteinyl-D-[4,4-3H]valine has been synthesized from its constituent amino acids, the L-alpha-amino[4,5-3H]adipic acid being obtained by reduction with 3H2 of methyl 5-acetamido-5,5-diethoxycarbonylpent-2-enoate and subsequent decarboxylation and hydrolysis. 2. In a cell-free system prepared by lysis of protoplasts of Cephalosporium acremonium 3H was incorporated from the doubly labelled tripeptide into a compound that behaved like penicillin N or isopenicillin N. The relative specific radioactivities of the alpha-aminoadipyl and penicillamine moieties of the penicillin were the same (within experimental error) as those of the alpha-aminoadipic acid and valine residues respectively of the tripeptide. 3. The behaviour of the labelled alpha-aminoadipic acid from the penicillin to the L-amino acid oxidase of Crotalus adamanteus venom showed that it was mainly L-alpha-aminoadipic acid. 4. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that the carbon skeleton of the LLD-tripeptide is incorporated intact into the penicillin molecule and that the first product is isopenicillin N.

    Abstract Background: Although there is evidence suggesting that postoperative infection confers a survival benefit in osteosarcoma treated with resection and endoprosthetic reconstruction, there have been no prospective studies to date to support these findings. This secondary analysis of Prophylactic Antibiotic Regimens in Tumor Surgery (PARITY) study data examines the relationship between surgical site infection (SSI) and disease progression within 12 months after limb salvage surgery.
    Methods: The PARITY trial was an international, multicenter, prospective randomized controlled trial of 604 patients who underwent resection of a lower-extremity bone tumor and endoprosthetic reconstruction. Our primary outcome was progression-free survival (PFS) at 1 year following surgery among the patients with osteosarcoma. Subgroup analyses by disease stage at presentation and infection severity were also performed. Cox proportional hazard models were employed to examine the association between clinical and tumor characteristics, SSI, and PFS. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to determine the effect of SSI on PFS.
    Results: The 274 PARITY patients with osteosarcoma were included in this secondary analysis. Thirty-two (11.7%) of the patients presented with metastasis at baseline; 53 (19.3%) of the patients developed an SSI. There was no difference in 1-year PFS between patients with and without SSI. There was no decreased risk of disease progression at 1 year in patients with localized disease at baseline who developed an SSI (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.21; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.64 to 2.28). Infection was associated with increased disease progression at 1 year in patients with baseline metastases (HR = 4.26; 95% CI = 1.11 to 16.3).
    Conclusions: No positive association was detected between postoperative infection and PFS at 1 year following surgery in this secondary analysis of prospective data. However, this analysis suggests infection could be a risk factor for early disease progression in patients with baseline metastases, and future investigations may better elucidate the association between disease burden and the host immune response to advance immunotherapeutic strategies for osteosarcoma.
