Abstract Drechslera avenacea is a potential bioherbicide for Avena fatua, wild oat, control in dryland wheat crops in southern Australia. Maximum disease severity (DS) (1.1 lesions per mm2 of leaf tissue) was recorded following application of 1 x 10(5) spores per ml and exposure of weeds to a 12- to 16-h dew period at 20-25 degrees C. Weed seedlings between 3 and 5 weeks of age were the most susceptible to the disease. Occurrence of a low humidity (< 50% R.H.) for up to 8-h before the initiation of a dew period following inoculation did not reduce subsequent DS. Repeated 8-h (suboptimal) dew periods increased DS when compared with a single 8-h dew period (0.26 lesions per mm2 compared to 0.39 lesions per mm2, respectively). This was not the case for repeated 6-h dew periods. Following inoculation, temperature had a direct effect on disease development rate. Plants recovered following inoculation and inoculated and uninoculated plants were not significantly different in terms of necrotic leaves 28 days after inoculation. Dew period limitations and the ability of D. avenacea to indirectly create a competitive advantage for wheat seedlings over wild oat are discussed in relation to the feasibility of this bioherbicide agent.

Abstract Background: Widening participation (WP) for underrepresented students through six-year gateway courses helps to widen the demographic representation of doctors in the UK. 'Most students from gateway courses graduate, even though many enter with lower grades than standard entry medicine students.' This study aims to compare the graduate outcomes of gateway and SEM cohorts from the same universities.
Methods: Data from 2007-13 from the UK Medical Education Database (UKMED) were available for graduates of gateway and SEM courses at three UK medical schools. Outcome measures were passing an entry exam on the first attempt, Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP) outcome and being offered a level one training position from the first application. The univariate analysis compared the two groups. Logistic regressions, predicting outcomes by course type, controlled for attainment on completion of medical school.
Results: Four thousand four hundred forty-five doctors were included in the analysis. There was no difference found in the ARCP outcome between gateway and SEM graduates. Gateway graduates were less likely to pass their first attempt at any membership exam than graduates of SEM courses (39% vs 63%). Gateway graduates were less likely to be offered a level 1 training position on their first application (75% vs 82%). Graduates of gateway courses were more likely to apply to General Practitioner (GP) training programmes than SEM graduates (56% vs 39%).
Conclusions: Gateway courses increase the diversity of backgrounds represented within the profession and importantly the number of applications to GP training. However, differences in cohort performance are shown to continue to exist in the postgraduate arena and further research is required to ascertain the reasons for this.

Abstract In most models and algorithms for dose-finding clinical trials, it is assumed that the trial participants are homogeneous-the optimal dose is the same for all those who qualify for the trial. However, if there are heterogeneous populations who may benefit from the same treatment, it is inefficient to conduct dose-finding separately for each group, and assuming homogeneity across all subpopulations may lead to identification of the incorrect dose for some (or all) subgroups. To accommodate heterogeneity in dose-finding trials when both efficacy and toxicity outcomes must be used to identify the optimal dose (as in immunotherapeutic oncology treatments), we utilize an adaptive Bayesian clustering method which borrows strength among similar subgroups and clusters truly homogeneous subgroups. Unlike methodology already described in the literature, our proposed methodology does not require the assumption of exchangeability between subgroups or a priori ordering of subgroups, but does allow for specification of different subgroup-specific priors if prior information is available. We provide a comparison of operating characteristics between our method and Bayesian hierarchical models for subgroups in a variety of relevant scenarios. After simulation studies with four a priori subgroups, we observed that our method and the hierarchical models both outperform separate subgroup-specific models when all subgroups have the same dose-efficacy and dose-toxicity curves. However, our method outperforms hierarchical models when one subgroup has a different dose-efficacy or dose-toxicity curve from the other three subgroups.
