    Abstract Copper-based aquatic algaecides have been widely used in the management of aquatic macrophyte and harmful algal blooms for decades due to their effectiveness and low cost. However, repeated treatment of freshwater lakes results in the accumulation of copper in the sediment, which may adversely affect the ecosystem of the lakes through toxicity to benthic invertebrates and other organisms. Consequently, copper-based aquatic herbicides and algaecides have been frequently subjected to regulations aimed at preventing further ecological deterioration in treated waterbodies. Many states in the US are taking or considering taking an approach that limits or prohibits copper treatment in waterbodies. Freshwater lakes with extensive historical copper treatments typically have significantly higher concentrations of copper in the sediment than untreated lakes. However, the correlation between the extent of the treatments and level of copper accumulation in the sediment has not been quantitatively characterized. In the present study, between 2006 and 2017, copper concentrations were measured in the sediment from selected lakes in New York State with different histories of copper-based aquatic algaecide treatment. Analysis of these data confirmed findings from earlier studies conducted by New York State that lakes with histories of copper treatment have significantly higher copper concentrations in the sediment. It also demonstrated that sediment copper concentrations were significantly higher in the sublittoral zone than the littoral zone in treated lakes. Moreover, a positive correlation was detected between sediment copper concentrations and the total number of treatments with copper-based aquatic algaecide for both littoral and sublittoral zones (p-value = 7.94 × 10

    Abstract Objective: To investigate the frequency of emergency department (ED) usage primarily for oral/dental conditions in Hawaii and to examine social-demographic factors associated with the identified ED visits.
    Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of the 2021 Hawaii Statewide Hospital data. We identified records indicating ED usage and a primary diagnosis of non-traumatic dental conditions (NTDC) and other oral dental conditions (OODC). Descriptive analyses of ED visits for NTDC and OODC were performed to identify vulnerable individuals based on age, sex, race/ethnicity, primary source of payment, county of residence, and total charges per hospital record. A multivariable negative binomial regression model included age, sex, and county of residence was used to obtain adjusted rate ratios (aRR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of ED visits for NTDC.
    Results: Among hospital records with diagnoses for oral or dental conditions (n = 12,336), 97% indicated ED, of which half had an NTDC diagnosis, and the remaining half had an OODC diagnosis. Distinct differences in the characteristics of ED visits were observed between NTDC and OODC. The median total charges per record indicating ED for NTDC and OODC were $1439 and $2439, respectively. A higher rate of ED visits for NTDC was found for those aged 21-44 (aRR [95%CI] = 3.02 [2.41, 3.80], reference: 0-9 years) and those living in a less populous county (Hawaii: 1.73 [1.43, 2.07]; Kauai: 1.78 [1.45, 2.19], reference: Honolulu).
    Conclusions: Continued effort to improve dental health is required to reduce ED visits for oral and dental conditions among Hawaii residents, especially for vulnerable individuals.

    Abstract The temporal evolution of microstructural features in metals and ceramics has been the subject of intense investigation over many years because deviations from normal grain growth behavior are ubiquitous and strongly dictate observed mechanical and magnetic properties. To distinguish among different grain growth scenarios, we examine the time evolution of the information content of both synthetic and experimental coarsening microstructures as quantified by both a computable information density (CID) and a spectral entropy along with selected metrics and measures of shared information and interaction strength. In these approaches, microstructural evolution is described in terms of two time series representations, namely: (1) strings and their compressed counterparts that reflect the information contained in the configuration of a system over time, and (2) the spectra of graph Laplacians that embody the information contained in a coarsening grain network. These approaches permit one to characterize dynamically evolving microstructures and to identify correlation times associated with different coarsening scenarios. Moreover, as the information content of a system is a proxy for the entropy, a thermodynamic description of grain growth is also described.

    Abstract Urbanization has dramatically altered Earth's landscapes and changed a multitude of environmental factors. This has resulted in intense land-use change, and adverse consequences such as the urban heat island effect (UHI), noise pollution, and artificial light at night (ALAN). However, there is a lack of research on the combined effects of these environmental factors on life-history traits and fitness, and on how these interactions shape food resources and drive patterns of species persistence. Here, we systematically reviewed the literature and created a comprehensive framework of the mechanistic pathways by which urbanization affects fitness and thus favors certain species. We found that urbanization-induced changes in urban vegetation, habitat quality, spring temperature, resource availability, acoustic environment, nighttime light, and species behaviors (e.g., laying, foraging, and communicating) influence breeding choices, optimal time windows that reduce phenological mismatch, and breeding success. Insectivorous and omnivorous species that are especially sensitive to temperature often experience advanced laying behaviors and smaller clutch sizes in urban areas. By contrast, some granivorous and omnivorous species experience little difference in clutch size and number of fledglings because urban areas make it easier to access anthropogenic food resources and to avoid predation. Furthermore, the interactive effect of land-use change and UHI on species could be synergistic in locations where habitat loss and fragmentation are greatest and when extreme-hot weather events take place in urban areas. However, in some instances, UHI may mitigate the impact of land-use changes at local scales and provide suitable breeding conditions by shifting the environment to be more favorable for species' thermal limits and by extending the time window in which food resources are available in urban areas. As a result, we determined five broad directions for further research to highlight that urbanization provides a great opportunity to study environmental filtering processes and population dynamics.

    Abstract Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries commonly occur in overhead athletes as a result of excess valgus stress on the elbow and can be functionally debilitating, requiring surgical intervention. Since the advent of the first initial UCL reconstruction technique pioneered by Dr. Frank Jobe performed on professional baseball player Tommy John, UCL, or Tommy John Ligament reconstruction has successfully returned athletes to sport following injury and shown enhanced clinical outcomes with minimal complication rates. Tommy John surgery continues to evolve with the development of various techniques over recent years. This technical note describes a UCL repair with an internal brace using knotless suture anchors and aims to contribute to the current literature a technique that is efficacious and reproducible and offers satisfactory stability, functionality, and return to play.
