Abstract Fast scanning calorimetry (FSC) experiments were performed to investigate physical aging in amorphous and semi-crystalline poly(l-lactic acid)s (PLLAs) that were thermally crystallized under conditions leading to the α'- or α-crystalline form, and either favouring or inhibiting the development of a rigid amorphous fraction (RAF). The enthalpy of recovery was calculated after two procedures of rescaling to the content of the whole amorphous phase and also to the only content of the mobile amorphous fraction (MAF), which helped in clarifying the contribution of the RAF. From the dependence of the structural relaxation rate on the aging temperature, two regimes were evidenced for all samples. In the aging temperature domain situated close to the glass transition, the structural relaxation occurs significantly faster in the MAF. Its rate is independent of the aging temperature and is not influenced by the microstructure. However, the distance to equilibrium is higher in samples for which the coupling is strong between crystal and amorphous, implying that the time to reach equilibrium is also higher. In contrast, at low aging temperatures, for which the whole amorphous phase can be considered as solid, MAF and RAF exhibit the same structrural relaxation rate. This convergence in the relaxation kinetics by decreasing the temperature of physical aging was interpreted as the evolution of relaxation dynamics in the MAF from segmental to local. This change is highlighted by the comparison between MAF and RAF relaxation kinetics, but it occurs similarly in a pure amorphous system.

Abstract Immunotherapy, especially checkpoint inhibitors such as anti-PD1 and anti-PDL1 antibodies, has changed the standard of care and the prognosis of melanoma, but also more recently of lung cancer, renal cancer and Hodgkin lymphoma. Results of preliminary studies in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) as well as in less frequent tumors of the region, such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma and high grade salivary gland carcinoma, are also promising. Indeed, in a recent phase 3 study, the PD1 inhibitor nivolumab has recently demonstrated a significant improvement in overall survival for platin-resistant recurrent and/or metastatic HNSCC.

Abstract The KTeV E799 experiment has conducted a search for the rare decays, K(L)→π(0)π(0)μ(+)μ(-) and K(L)→π(0)π(0)X(0)→π(0)π(0)μ(+)μ(-), where the X(0) is a possible new neutral boson that was reported by the HyperCP experiment with a mass of (214.3 ± 0.5) MeV/c(2). We find no evidence for either decay. We obtain upper limits of Br(K(L)→π(0)π(0)X(0)→π(0)π(0)μ(+)μ(-)) < 1.0 × 10(-10) and Br(K(L)→π(0)π(0)μ(+)μ(-)) < 9.2 × 10(-11) at the 90% confidence level. This result rules out the pseudoscalar X(0) as an explanation of the HyperCP result under the scenario that the dsX(0) coupling is completely real.

Abstract The semicrystalline state of polymers implies the formation of a noncrystalline interphase beside lamellar crystals known as the rigid amorphous fraction (RAF). This devitrifies on heating at temperatures much higher than the one typical of the bulk-amorphous fraction. Its glass transition and physical aging in the glassy state have thus far remained elusive. Here, we study the RAF glassy dynamics in poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) applying recently developed aging thermal protocols based on fast scanning calorimetry (FSC). Specifically, semicrystalline samples are aged in different conditions between the glass transition of mobile amorphous fraction and the crystals’ melting temperature (TM). A distinct endothermic peak at temperatures above that of aging develops with time. We provide compelling evidence that in the initial part of aging the origin of this peak is due to the enthalpy recovery of glassy RAF. At longer aging times, the aging peak is at least partly associated with secondary crystallization. Isochronous experiments at different aging temperatures enable to obtain a fair estimate of the RAF glass transition temperature, whose upper limit is about 135 °C. The proposed method holds the promise of gaining new insights into the elusive glassy dynamics of the RAF of semicrystalline polymers.

Abstract Growth of pollen tubes and seed set were compared after hand pollination in situ and in vitro in two self-incompatible species, Trifolium pratense and Trifolium repens. Adhesion of pollen grains to the stigma was greater in vitro for both species. After cross-pollination, in vitro culture gave a significant increase in the cumulative growth of pollen tubes in pistils of T. pratense compared to in situ conditions. After selfing in T. repens, pollen tube growth was significantly increased by in vitro culture of florets. Seed set after crossing in situ and in vitro was similar for both species. Seed set after selfing in vitro was not increased in T. pratense. Several genotypes of T. repens were classified as very good, good and poor selfers based on their capacity for seed set following selfing in situ. In vitro pollination increased self seed formation by 1.7-, 18.0- and 31.0-fold for each class, respectively. Ovules located nearest to the style were fertilized more often after selfing than after crossing.

The « family quotient » (quotient familial in France) has been at the center of policy ensuring familialization of income tax in France since its creation in 1946. It is often criticized, mainly for its redistributive effect, many indicating that it gives an increasing advantage to families as income and number of children increase. More recently, some analyses adopting a gendered view have contested its influence on the choice of women in terms of employment. The present contribution takes into account these familialized instruments of fiscal policy to analyze their impact on women’s employment.
