Abstract Anterior mediastinal masses can be difficult to characterise on computed tomography (CT) due to the wide spectrum of normal appearances of thymic tissue as well as the challenge of differentiating between benign and malignant pathologies. Additionally, attenuation of cystic mediastinal lesions can be misinterpreted on CT due to varying attenuation values. Anecdotally, non-vascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thorax is underutilised across radiology departments in the UK, but has been shown to improve diagnostic certainty and reduce unnecessary surgical intervention. T2-weighted MRI is useful in confirming the cystic nature of lesions, whereas chemical shift techniques can be utilised to document the presence of macroscopic and intra-cellular fat and thus help distinguish between benign and malignant pathologies. In this review article, we present a practical approach to using MRI for the characterisation of anterior mediastinal lesions based on our clinical experience in a UK district general hospital.

Abstract Despite the wide distribution and persistence of microplastics (MPs), their interactive effects with molluscicides are unknown. Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease, affects 236.6 million people worldwide. Niclosamide (NCL) is the only molluscicide recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and it is used to control the population of Schistosoma spp.'s intermediate host. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate of the interaction between polyethylene (PE) MPs and NCL, and their associated toxicity in the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata (Say 1818). Weathered PE MPs were characterized and theoretical analysis of NCL-MP adsorption nature was made using quantum mechanical calculations. The toxicity of NCL isolated (0.0265 to 0.0809 mg L

Abstract Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) are a heterogeneous group of conditions characterised by non-infective inflammation and scarring of the lung parenchyma. They are not infrequently encountered by the general radiologist in both acute and outpatient reporting settings who may even be the first to make the diagnosis. In the acute setting, patients with ILD can present with respiratory deterioration due to a number of causes and in addition to the common causes of dyspnoea, an acute exacerbation of ILD needs to be considered. An exacerbation can be initiated by common triggers such as infection, pulmonary embolism (PE), and heart failure, and it can also be initiated by an insult to the lung or occur due to an unknown cause. Particular care needs to be taken when interpreting computed tomography (CT) examinations in these patients as the findings of an acute exacerbation are non-specific and patient and technical factors can cause spurious appearances including dependent changes, breathing artefact and contrast medium opacification. In the non-acute setting, patients with ILD are at increased risk of lung cancer and pulmonary hypertension (PH), with lung cancer being a particularly important consideration as treatments carry the risk of triggering an acute exacerbation or deterioration in lung function. Overall, this review aims to provide an overview for the general radiologist of additional factors to consider when interpreting scans in patients with ILD and how the presence of ILD impacts the differential diagnoses and complications that can occur in these patients in both acute and non-acute settings.

Abstract The half-adder is one of the most useful combinational logic functions for data processing. Many research papers in the literature propose nonlinear all-optical half-adders. Few studies propose linear all-optical devices, and those that do usually employ microstructured 2D photonic crystals. This work presents the numerical acquisition of an all-optical half-adder using a linear three-core fiber device. The device presents high performance and acceptable values of fabrication and modulation tolerance. It can be made using any fiber technology and propagated by pulses of any wavelength. Depending on the type of fiber used, the precision needed to fabricate the device's smallest structures can range from 20 nm to 90 nm. This result is evidence of the possibility of obtaining nonlinear logical processing using only fiber design.

Abstract Bauhinia pulchella Benth. (Fabaceae), is native to Brazil and popularly known as pata-de-bode. In folk medicine, it is used to treat diabetes. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated different properties, such as cytotoxic and antioxidant, and different chemical constituents, such as essential oil, triterpenoids, steroids, among others. In order to highlight the morphological differences of the species B. pulchella from the others of the genus, and its pharmacological potential, the present study aimed to carry out the anatomical and histochemical characterization of the stem and leaves of B. pulchella. Usual methods in plant anatomy were used in the preparation of semi-permanent slides containing cross sections of the stem, petiole and leaf blade and paradermal sections of the leaf blade for analysis in light microscopy and polarized light. Histochemical tests were also performed to localize the metabolites in the stem and leaf blade. The stem of B. pulchella has a cylindrical outline, the bark is composed of 7-8 layers of cells and discontinuously distributed sclerenchyma; petiole presents flat convex contour, prominences in the adaxial region, concentric amphicrivral vascular bundle, surrounding a small concentric anfivasal intramedullary bundle, adaxially two accessory bundles and tector trichomes; leaf blade with anisocytic and tetracytic stomata on the adaxial surface and anisocytic, tetracytic and anomocytic on the abaxial surface; and midrib with plain-convex outline, 1-2 layers of collenchyma and covering trichomes. Characteristics that differ from other species of the genus Bauhinia. Alkaloids, phenolic compounds, lipophilic compounds, lignin, triterpenes, steroids and tannins were observed in the species. The results are fundamental for the pharmacobotanical standardization of the studied species.

Abstract Digital multiplexers/demultiplexers (MUX/DEMUXes) are essential for computing, data transmission, and data processing. However, research on all-optical digital MUX/DEMUXes is scarce and generally proposes single-function nonlinear devices. This work presents the numerical acquisition of all-optical digital MUX/DEMUXes using a linear three-core fiber device. Our device, called the interchanging-cores planar three-core fiber coupler, is propagated by low-powered amplitude modulated pulses, can operate with pulses of any wavelength, and can be made using any fiber technology. This result is further evidence of the possibility of obtaining logical processing, even nonlinear logical processing, using fiber-only design.

Abstract Background: There is a need for a deeper understanding of the barriers to research in family medicine (FM) and to consider the perceptions and perspectives of professionals. Our study aims to provide a strategic view for research capacity building in FM. We included the perspective of family physician researchers (FPR) on the existing barriers to investigation in this context.
Objectives: To understand and characterize the barriers to research in FM (personal and structural), from the perspective of Portuguese family physicians who are researchers.
Methods: A qualitative study, of phenomenological nature, was performed, through the conduction of semi-structured interviews with FPR, from 2019 to 2022. Data analysis and thematic coding were done on MAxQDA®, with inductive and deductive approaches, until data saturation was reached.
Results: A total of 12 family physicians/researchers were interviewed. Seven main themes were identified as barriers to research: time, professional valorization, funding, ethics committees, infrastructure, management/institutions, and participants. Each theme is divided into subthemes that make it possible to assess how a barrier can affect researchers in performing research activities.
Conclusion: Our study highlights the identification of 7 main barriers. Structuring them into sub-themes not only improved the organization of our results but also provided robust support for the next phase, namely the application of a survey with the aim of gaining a deeper insight into the repercussions that these barriers to FPR have at a national level. This research is crucial to laying the foundations for a policy document that offers well-defined and tailored recommendations to address the barriers we have uncovered.

Abstract Objectives: To evaluate the volume and depth of enamel loss promoted by 37.5% and 7.5% hydrogen peroxide (HP) gels, and quantify the loss of calcium (Ca) and phosphate (P) ions by using ion chromatography (IC) analysis after bleaching.
Methods: Sixty bovine enamel specimens were randomly divided into three groups: Control - no bleaching gel; HP37.5%, application of HP 37.5% for 45 minutes for 14 days; and HP7.5%, application of HP 7.5% for 3 applications of 8 minutes. The surface analysis (n=5) was performed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and dispersive energy system (EDS) to calcium and phosphorus dosage. The micro-CT was used for the enamel loss analysis (n=5). IC was used to analyze extracted Ca and P (n=10). Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and two-way repeated measures ANOVA, followed by Tukey and Dunnett's tests (α=0.05).
Results: Significantly higher volume and depth of enamel loss were found for bleached groups compared with the control group. HP7.5% had significantly higher enamel change than HP37.5%. SEM showed higher enamel porosity for HP37.5% and HP7.5% compared to control. The IC demonstrated a significant increase of Ca incorporated into the gel, however, only HP7.5% had a higher P presence than the control group. The HP7.5% showed higher Ca and P ion exchange than HP37.5% (p<0.001).
Conclusion: HP37.5% and HP7.5%, caused enamel mineral changes compared with the control group. The IC method was demonstrated to be an effective methodology for detecting enamel mineral loss by the bleaching gel.
