Abstract Mei-yu is an important weather phenomenon in the middle-lower Yangtze River valley (YRV) region. This study investigates the changes in the characteristics of Mei-yu under global warming and the potential reasons based on observation and reanalysis data during 1961-2022. Notable increasing long-term trends are detected in the number of days without rainfall (NDWOR), the intensity of rainfall events, and the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation events (EPEs) in the YRV region during the Mei-yu period (15 June-10 July) over past decades. The increasing trend in NDWOR is attributed to decreased relative humidity over land surface and a longer time for the air to be replenished with moisture after rainfall events in a warming climate. The increasing trends in the intensity of rainfall events and frequency/intensity of EPEs are attributed to the strengthened transient water vapor convergence and convection in the atmosphere under global warming. Furthermore, the response of Mei-yu to 2°C of global warming with respect to the pre-industrial climate is analysed using CMIP6 models. The results suggest that the NDWOR, intensity of rainfall events and frequency of EPEs will increase in the YRV region during the Mei-yu period under the 2°C warming scenario, which implies a more challenging climate risk management in the future. Overall, the intensity of rainfall events during the Mei-yu period has the most significant response to climate change in observations and projections. The model results have a relatively large uncertainty.

Abstract Background: Wu Mei Pills (WMP) is a traditional Chinese medication that exhibits considerable anti-inflammatory effects. While WMP has been documented for its efficacy in treating RA, its mechanism of action on the condition remains unestablished.
Methods: The chemical composition of WMP was analyzed through UPLC-MS. Next, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, cell scratch, Transwell, and Western blotting techniques were used to investigate its intrinsic mechanism. Lastly, the effect of WMP in inhibiting RA was explored by applying it to CIA rats.
Result: UPLC-MS analysis detected 181 compounds in WMP. RA-FLS migration and invasion mechanisms were significantly hindered by serum containing WMP (2%, 8%). Moreover, WMP (0.5 g/kg, 2 g/kg) restricted arthritis and immune organ indices in CIA rats with type II collagen-induced rheumatoid arthritis by blocking TLR4-NF-κB inflammatory pathway activation.
Conclusions: WMP is valuable in mitigating the course of RA through inhibiting the classical TLR4-NF-κB inflammatory pathway and reducing the secretion of inflammatory factors in the serum of RA-FLS and CIA rats. Moreover, it regulates the dynamic balance of MMP-2/TIMP-2, MMP-9/TIMP-1, modulates the mechanism of RA-FLS invasion, and safeguards articular cartilage tissues in RA.

Abstract As an effective formula of traditional Chinese medicine, Yang-Gan-Jiang-Mei (YGJM) formula exhibited a unique advantage in ameliorating liver injury and hepatic steatosis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Nevertheless, the related pharmacological mechanism needs to be elucidated. This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanism of YGJM formula on mitophagy mediated by PINK1/parkin signaling pathway and NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in NASH. High-fat-diet rats and HepG2 cells induced by free fatty acid were used as NASH models

Abstract Mei (Prunus mume) is widely planted in Eastern Asian countries. To evaluate the effect of cultivar and producing origin on the quality of Mei fruit, we studied the phytochemical properties and antioxidant activities of the 16 Mei fruit cultivars from 6 provinces in China, as well as their profiles of 121 volatile compounds, 5 organic acids, 13 minerals, 24 amino acids and 3 active peptides. Multivariate analysis revealed that the four Mei fruit cultivars with a drier climate in Yunnan province had the characteristics of low water moistures and proteins contents, high total acids, soluble solids, flavones, and phenols contents, and high antioxidant activities, which could be distinguished from fruits of other producing areas. Further component analysis showed that Mei fruits were rich in volatile compounds, organic acids (such as citric acid and malic acid), minerals (such as K, Ca, Mg, P, and Fe), and amino acids (such as Orn, Asn, and Asp), and the nutrient composition ratio in different cultivars was different. In conclusion, Mei fruits can be used as nutritious health food and different cultivars focus on different nutritional compositions.

Abstract Mei (Prunus mume Sieb.et Zucc.), originated in the Hengduan Mountains region in China, has been domesticated as an important ornamental and fruit plant for more than 3,000 years. The distribution of germplasm resources of mei and its cold-resistance breeding and new cultivar breeding for both flower and fruit purposes had been reviewed. Mei has an abundant wild and semi-wild resources mainly distributed in southwestern China. Through long-term selection and breeding, mei has been domesticated to yield about 380 cultivars in 15 distinct regions of 20 Chinese provinces, some of which survive more than two hundred years (known as ancient mei). There are 75 ancient mei identified in six southwestern and southeastern provinces. Also, tremendous effort has been made to select mei for its cold hardiness, especially 'Three-North Areas' of China. By crossbreeding with apricot, a much cold-hardy species and many cold-resistance cultivars, such as 'Yan Xing', 'Hua Hudie', and 'Shan Taobai', had been cultivated in the past 60 years. These cultivars could tolerate and resist cold temperature of -15 to -35°C. Furthermore, according to the criteria developed on the basis of field investigations of mei cultivars in six provinces, several new cultivars for both flowers and fruits that including 'Yanwen Fenghou', 'Yulong Hongfei' and 'Judian No. 1' were selected and introduced. As an ornamental woody plant, mei has proven itself to be an important model plant for studying the evolution and diversification of genus Prunus.

Abstract Bismuth-containing quadruple therapy has been recommended as the first line of treatment in areas of high clarithromycin or metronidazole resistance. However, safety concerns of bismuth agents have long been raised. We first assessed the efficacy and safety of Wei Bi Mei granules, which are bismuth compounds consisting of three synthetic drugs and five medicinal herbs, compared to bismuth aluminate and colloidal bismuth subcitrate (CBS) in H. pylori-infected mouse model. We then used atomic fluorescence spectroscopy and autometallography to measure the accumulation of three bismuth agents in the brain, heart, liver, and kidneys in adult Sprague-Dawley rats. We also evaluated the safety of bismuth agents by conducting clinical biochemistry tests in blood samples of experimental animals. Wei Bi Mei granules exhibited the highest efficacy of anti-H. pylori activity and yielded the lowest bismuth accumulation when compared to CBS and bismuth aluminate. Our findings show that Wei Bi Mei granules are a safe Chinese medicinal herb with potent anti-H. pylori activity and can be considered as an alternative to current bismuth compounds. Thus, Wei Bi Mei granules merit further evaluation, particularly with regard to efficacy and safety when they are combined with other H. pylori eradication medications in the clinical setting.

Abstract There are various titles applied for "sleepless", including mu bu ming (unclosed eyes), bu de mian (unable to sleep), bu de wo (unable to lie down), shi mian (insomnia). The implications of the titles vary according to different periods. Bu de wo (unable to lie down) was first appeared in Zu bi shi yi mai jiu jing (Moxibustion Classic of Foot and Arm Eleven Channels) and Yin yang shi yi mai jiu jing (Moxibustion Classic of Yin-Yang Eleven Channels), while bu de wo, mu bu ming, and ye bu mei were appeared in Huang di nei jing (Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor), bu mei was first seen in Nan jing (Classic of Questioning). When bu de mian and bu de wo were applied in Zhang Zhongjing's Shang han lun (Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases) and Jin kui yao lue (Synopsis of Golden Chamber), it exerted good influence in later generations. The title of bu mei was more popular after the Ming and Qing dynasties. This titles is the most appropriate one from the standpoint of syndrome itself as viewed from its semantic implication and its accuracy.

Abstract Because of its popularity as an ornamental plant in East Asia, mei (Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc.) has received increasing attention in genetic and genomic research with the recent shotgun sequencing of its genome. Here, we performed the genome-wide characterization of simple sequence repeats (SSRs) in the mei genome and detected a total of 188,149 SSRs occurring at a frequency of 794 SSR/Mb. Mononucleotide repeats were the most common type of SSR in genomic regions, followed by di- and tetranucleotide repeats. Most of the SSRs in coding sequences (CDS) were composed of tri- or hexanucleotide repeat motifs, but mononucleotide repeats were always the most common in intergenic regions. Genome-wide comparison of SSR patterns among the mei, strawberry (Fragaria vesca), and apple (Malus×domestica) genomes showed mei to have the highest density of SSRs, slightly higher than that of strawberry (608 SSR/Mb) and almost twice as high as that of apple (398 SSR/Mb). Mononucleotide repeats were the dominant SSR motifs in the three Rosaceae species. Using 144 SSR markers, we constructed a 670 cM-long linkage map of mei delimited into eight linkage groups (LGs), with an average marker distance of 5 cM. Seventy one scaffolds covering about 27.9% of the assembled mei genome were anchored to the genetic map, depending on which the macro-colinearity between the mei genome and Prunus T×E reference map was identified. The framework map of mei constructed provides a first step into subsequent high-resolution genetic mapping and marker-assisted selection for this ornamental species.
