    Abstract We evaluated the direct application of different extracts from plant‐derived compounds at different ratios. The best effect was observed with the combination of 18.18% clove, 9.90% cinnamon, 9.09% licorice, 4.55% firmament, 4.55% grapefruit seed extract, and 54.54% apple cider vinegar. The combination of these compounds improved the moisture content of the fruit and showed antifungal, antibrowning, and antifungal/antibrowning effects as compared with the control following 6‐week treatment. The treatment resulted in an increase in the overall sugar concentration of dried persimmons. Antibrowning/antifungal test showed high sugar content of 30–39 °brix. The hardness of the treatment groups was similar to that of the control and decreased by 0.5 to 0.8 after 6 weeks. The evaluation of color change revealed a decreasing tendency in the value of △E during the drying period. Thus, natural extracts effectively suppressed the quality degradation during drying of persimmon and may be used to replace sulfur fumigation.

    Abstract The utilization of fillers, notably hyaluronic acid, has increased due to their proven effectiveness, versatility, and generally favorable safety profile. In the field of rhinoplasty, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers have been employed for the correction of nasal deformities and surface irregularities. Nevertheless, the intricate vascular network of the nasal region, involving anastomoses between the external and internal carotid arteries, predisposes it to serious vascular complications. We report a case of a severe septal ulcer secondary to local ischemia following an injection of a hyaluronic acid nasal filler. The patient presented with immediate pain and nasal discomfort; however, there was an unfortunate delay in diagnosis and treatment. This report discusses the intricacies of the case and imparts crucial insights gleaned from the incident.

    Abstract Although coffee is one of the most consumed caffeinated beverages worldwide, the role of coffee consumption in migraine is controversial. This study examined the relationship between coffee consumption and clinical characteristics in participants with migraine compared to those with non-migraine headache. This cross-sectional study used data from a nationwide survey on headache and sleep. Coffee consumption was classified as no-to-low (< 1 cup/day), moderate (1-2 cups/day), or high (≥ 3 cups/day). Of the 3030 survey participants, 170 (5.6%) and 1,768 (58.3%) were identified as having migraine and non-migraine headache, respectively. Coffee consumption tended to increase in the order of non-headache, non-migraine headache, and migraine (linear-by-linear association, p = 0.011). Although psychiatric comorbidities (depression for migraine and anxiety for non-migraine headache) and stress significantly differed according to coffee consumption, most headache characteristics and accompanying symptoms did not differ among the three groups for participants with migraine and non-migraine headache. Response to acute headache treatment-adjusted for age, sex, depression, anxiety, stress, preventive medication use, and current smoking-was not significantly different by coffee consumption in participants with migraine and non-migraine headache. In conclusion, most headache-related characteristics and acute treatment response did not significantly differ by coffee consumption in migraine and non-migraine headache.

    Abstract The surface hydrophilization of mixed plastic waste aggregates (MPAs) was conducted to improve the bond between an MPA and the surrounding cement matrix using two types of coating agents: a silicone amine resin and acrylic binders. The coating agents formed a physical bond with the MPAs, and the results of contact angle measurement also revealed that the surface of MPAs was hydrophilic. The workability of a mortar mix increased by up to 1.47 times with the surface hydrophilization of MPAs. Meanwhile, the compressive and flexural strengths of mortar mixes decreased by 29~43% and 72~86%, respectively, at 28 days with the surface hydrophilization of MPAs. Namely, the surface hydrophilization of MPAs was successively conducted, and the workability of mortar mixes was improved accordingly, but the compressive and flexural strengths of mortar mixes decreased as the physical bond was partially separated from not only the MPA but also the surrounding cement matrix and the surface friction was decreased.

    Abstract Synthetic data generation addresses the challenges of obtaining extensive empirical datasets, offering benefits such as cost-effectiveness, time efficiency, and robust model development. Nonetheless, synthetic data-generation methodologies still encounter significant difficulties, including a lack of standardized metrics for modeling different data types and comparing generated results. This study introduces PVS-GEN, an automated, general-purpose process for synthetic data generation and verification. The PVS-GEN method parameterizes time-series data with minimal human intervention and verifies model construction using a specific metric derived from extracted parameters. For complex data, the process iteratively segments the empirical dataset until an extracted parameter can reproduce synthetic data that reflects the empirical characteristics, irrespective of the sensor data type. Moreover, we introduce the PoR metric to quantify the quality of the generated data by evaluating its time-series characteristics. Consequently, the proposed method can automatically generate diverse time-series data that covers a wide range of sensor types. We compared PVS-GEN with existing synthetic data-generation methodologies, and PVS-GEN demonstrated a superior performance. It generated data with a similarity of up to 37.1% across multiple data types and by 19.6% on average using the proposed metric, irrespective of the data type.

    Abstract Nociplastic pain by the "International Association for the Study of Pain" is defined as pain that arises from altered nociception despite no clear evidence of nociceptive or neuropathic pain. Augmented central nervous system pain and sensory processing with altered pain modulation are suggested to be the mechanism of nociplastic pain. Clinical criteria for possible nociplastic pain affecting somatic structures include chronic regional pain and evoked pain hypersensitivity including allodynia with after-sensation. In addition to possible nociplastic pain, clinical criteria for probable nociplastic pain are pain hypersensitivity in the region of pain to non-noxious stimuli and presence of comorbidity such as generalized symptoms with sleep disturbance, fatigue, or cognitive problems with hypersensitivity of special senses. Criteria for definitive nociplastic pain is not determined yet. Eight specific disorders related to central sensitization are suggested to be restless leg syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, temporomandibular disorder, migraine or tension headache, irritable bowel syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, and whiplash injury; non-specific emotional disorders related to central sensitization include anxiety or panic attack and depression. These central sensitization pain syndromes are overlapped to previous functional pain syndromes which are unlike organic pain syndromes and have emotional components. Therefore, nociplastic pain can be understood as chronic altered nociception related to central sensitization including both sensory components with nociceptive and/or neuropathic pain and emotional components. Nociplastic pain may be developed to explain unexplained chronic pain beyond tissue damage or pathology regardless of its origin from nociceptive, neuropathic, emotional, or mixed pain components.

    Abstract The epigenome, consisting of chemical modifications to DNA and histone proteins, can alter gene expression. Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/dead CRISPR-associated protein 9 (CRISPR/dCas9) systems enable precise target gene-specific gene modulation by attaching different "effector" domains to the dCas9 protein to activate or repress specific genes. CRISPR/dCas9-SunTag is an improved system version, allowing more efficient and precise gene activation or repression by recruiting multiple copies of the protein of interest. A CRISPR/dCas9-SunTag-based modular epigenetic toolkit was developed, enabling gene-specific epigenetic architecture modulation. This protocol generated a stable SH-SY5Y cell line expressing the CRISPR/dCas9-SunTag-JARID1A system to study H3K4Me3-mediated promoter regulation at a 200-400 bp of fine resolution. The procedure involved designing sgRNAs, subcloning dCas9-5XGCN4 into pLvx-DsRed, validating epigenetic mark changes with ChIP, and validating gene expression changes with RT-qPCR. This epigenetic toolkit is valuable for researchers to understand the relationship between gene-specific epigenetic modifications and gene expression.

    Abstract Objective: The global incidence of thrombosis is increasing. However, research on thrombosis in the context of Korea is scarce. We aimed to analyze the relationship between factor V and protein C test results and thrombosis in Koreans through a domestic commissioned testing institution conducting mass examinations.
    Methods: Results of factor V and protein C tests of 1386 individuals referred simultaneously to EONE Laboratories (Incheon, Republic of Korea) from January 2017 to July 2023 were analyzed retrospectively to identify the association with thrombotic disease. The tests were performed using a STAR MAX (Diagnostica Stago, Asnieres, France) automatic blood coagulation analyzer. The results were analyzed by age and sex.
    Results: The inspection rate increased gradually from 2017 to 2022. Women (70.0%) demonstrated a higher test rate than did men (30.0%). Young women reported high test rates; the test rate and age distribution differed by sex. Women aged between 20 and 49 years reported lower factor V and higher protein C concentrations than did men between 20 and 49 years of age.
    Conclusions: The tests were more commonly performed in women than in men. Women aged between 20 and 49 years reported lower factor V concentrations and higher protein C concentrations than men between 20 and 49 years of age. This study will facilitate recognizing and preventing thrombotic diseases in women.

    Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Much progress has been made regarding the understanding of hepatocarcinogenesis, yet the long-term survival rate of HCC patients remains poor. Recent efforts have shown parafibromin has a pathologic role in many human cancers, but little is known about the effects of parafibromin in HCC. This study aimed to investigate the pattern of parafibromin expression and its clinicopathologic significance in human HCC. Immunohistochemical analysis of HCC and matched non-tumor liver tissues from 50 HCC patients showed that the nuclear expression of parafibromin was higher in HCC tissues (50/50 cases) than in non-tumor liver tissues (17/50 cases).
