    Abstract The Arabian horse breed is well known for its purity and played a key role in the genetic improvement of other horses worldwide. The mitochondrial genome plays a vital role in maternal inheritance and it's helpful to evaluate its genetic diversity and conservation. It has higher mutation rates than nuclear DNA in vertebrates and therefore reveals phylogenetic relationships and haplotypes. In this study, the mitochondrial genome mutations in two Saudi horse strains, Kehilan and Hamdani demonstrated various changes in the gene and amino acid levels and included two other Saudi horses (Hadban and Seglawi) from the previous study for phylogenetic comparison. The whole mitochondrial genome sequencing resulted in intra and inter mtDNA variations between the studied horses. Interestingly, the Hamdani horse has nucleotide substitutions similar to those of the Hadban horse, which is reflected in the phylogenetic tree as a significantly close relationship. This type of study provides a better understanding of mitogenome structure and conservation of livestock species genetic data.

    Abstract Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and alcoholic steatohepatitis (ASH) both can progress to end-stage liver disease (ESLD). No relevant animal models are available for studying the toxic consequences of concurrent fast food diet and alcohol usage in fibrosing NASH. As a result, dependable and short-term in-vivo models capable of recapitulating human disease pathophysiology are required for deciphering mechanistic insights and preclinical drug discovery programs. The current study aims to develop a mouse model for progressive steatohepatitis employing a fast food (FF) diet with intermittent oral alcohol (EtOH) administration. For eight (8) weeks, C57BL/6J mice were fed standard chow (SC) diet ± EtOH or FF ± EtOH. EtOH uses enhanced the histological characteristics of FF -induced steatohepatitis and fibrosis. A dysregulated molecular signaling cascade related to oxidative stress, steatosis, fibrosis, DNA damage, and apoptosis was evident at protein and gene expression levels in the FF + EtOH. The results from the in-vivo model were replicated in mouse hepatocyte cultures (AML-12) subjected to palmitic acid (PA) ± EtOH exposures. The results of the present study indicate that the clinical hallmarks of human progressive steatohepatitis and fibrosis were achieved in our mice model, showing its suitability for preclinical research.

    Abstract Degenerative diseases, encompassing a wide range of conditions affecting various organ systems, pose significant challenges to global healthcare systems. This comprehensive review explores the intricate interplay between the vascular system and degenerative diseases, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms and profound implications for disease progression and management. The pivotal role of the vascular system in maintaining tissue homeostasis is highlighted, as it serves as the conduit for oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells to vital organs and tissues. Due to the vital role of the vascular system in maintaining homeostasis, its dysfunction, characterized by impaired blood flow, endothelial dysfunction, and vascular inflammation, emerges as a common denominator of degenerative diseases across multiple systems. In the nervous system, we explored the influence of vascular factors on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, emphasizing the critical role of cerebral blood flow regulation and the blood-brain barrier. Within the kidney system, the intricate relationship between vascular health and chronic kidney disease is scrutinized, unraveling the mechanisms by which hypertension and other vascular factors contribute to renal dysfunction. Throughout this review, we emphasize the clinical significance of understanding vascular involvement in degenerative diseases and potential therapeutic interventions targeting vascular health, highlighting emerging treatments and prevention strategies. In conclusion, a profound appreciation of the role of the vascular system in degenerative diseases is essential for advancing our understanding of degenerative disease pathogenesis and developing innovative approaches for prevention and treatment. This review provides a comprehensive foundation for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers seeking to address the intricate relationship between vascular health and degenerative diseases in pursuit of improved patient outcomes and enhanced public health.

    Abstract Background: Epipericardial fat necrosis (EFN) is a rare and self-limiting cause of acute chest pain. We describe a case of EFN in a patient with a recent coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
    Case presentation: A 55-year-old male presented with a sudden onset of left-sided pleuritic chest pain for the past two days. The patient was diaphoretic, tachypneic, and tachycardic. Acute coronary syndrome was ruled out. A computed tomography (CT) pulmonary angiogram revealed an ovoid encapsulated fatty mass surrounded by dense appearing tissue. Patient symptoms improved remarkably with a short course of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
    Discussion: EFN typically presents with a sudden onset of excruciating chest pain. Misdiagnosis, under-diagnosis, and mismanagement are unavoidable. EFN is incidentally diagnosed on CT scan. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infects visceral adipose tissue and appears to increase the risk of EFN by promoting inflammatory cytokine production and death of adipocytes.
    Conclusion: EFN is a rare cause of acute chest pain. SARS-CoV-2 is likely to induce EFN. This rare clinical entity should be considered in the differential of acute chest pain especially in patients with active or recent COVID-19.
    Learning points: Epipericardial fat necrosis (EFN) is a rare cause of acute pleuritic chest pain that is often misdiagnosed and mismanaged.SARS-CoV-2 can possibly increase the risk of EFN and this entity should be considered in the differential of chest pain, especially in patients with active or recent coronavirus disease (COVID-19).Clinician awareness of EFN and its potential association with COVID-19, can reduce unnecessary testing and emotional distress.

    Abstract Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure is the primary etiological agent responsible for developing cutaneous malignancies. Avoiding excessive radiation exposure, especially by high-risk groups, is recommended to prevent UV-induced photo-pathologies. However, optimal sun exposure is essential for the healthy synthesis of about 90% of vitamin D levels in the body. Insufficient exposure to UV-B is linked to vitamin D deficiency in humans. Therefore, optimal sun exposure is necessary for maintaining a normal state of homeostasis in the skin. Humans worldwide face a major existential threat because of climate change which has already shown its effects in several ways. Over the last 4 to 5 decades, increased incidences in skin cancer cases have led international health organizations to develop strong sun protection measures. However, at the same time, a growing concern about vitamin D deficiency is creating a kind of exposure dilemma. Current knowledge of UV exposure to skin outweighs the adverse effects than the beneficial roles it offers to the body, necessitating a correct public health recommendation on optimal sun exposure. Following an appropriate recommendation on optimal sun exposure will lead to positive outcomes in protecting humans against the adverse effects of strict recommendations on sun protection measures. In this short review, we spotlight the ambivalent health effects of UV exposure and how ozone layer depletion has influenced these effects of UVR. Further, our aim remains to explore how to lead towards a balanced recommendation on sun protection measures to prevent the spurt of diseases due to inadequate exposure to UV-B.
