Abstract Selective catalytic conversion of carbohydrates to 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) is a critical approach to the biorefinery. In this work, solid acid catalysts of γ-AlOOH and CeO₂@B₂O₃ were used to convert carbohydrates to EMF in a one-pot process, performed in an ethanol/DMSO solvent system. The synergistic effect of γ-AlOOH and CeO₂@B₂O₃ was studied. Furthermore, the morpho-structural properties of the catalysts were characterized, and the effects of reaction time, reaction temperature, catalyst load, and the amount of cosolvent on the conversion of glucose to EMF were examined and optimized. Under the reaction conditions of 170 °C for 20 h, glucose, sucrose, cellobiose, inulin and starch were used as raw materials, and the EMF yield range was 9.2–27.7%. The results showed that the synergistic effect of γ-AlOOH and CeO₂@B₂O₃ further causes the combination of multiple acid sites with different types and strength distributions. Particularly, the collaboration between weak, medium-strong, and strong acid, as well as between Lewis and Brønsted acidity, is of great significance for EMF generation. The reusability experiments showed that the combined catalytic system was easily separated and maintained catalytic activity for five successive reactions without further intermediate regeneration steps. This work provides a promising route for the catalytic conversion of biomass-derived carbohydrates into EMF.

Abstract Two new halogen-rich ortho-borates, Ba₆BO₃Cl₉ and Pb₆BO₄Cl₇, were synthesized and characterized. Interestingly, Pb₆BO₄Cl₇ contains rare uncondensed BO₄ tetrahedra. The structure analyses indicate that the large cation/boron ratio, the stereochemically active lone pairs on Pb²⁺ cations and the rich Cl⁻ anions play key roles in the formation of the uncondensed BO₄ tetrahedra.

Abstract Dr Guang-Bo Zhang was the first anesthesiologist to administer and study the effects of labor epidural analgesia in China. Between September 1963 and March 1964, she conducted an observational study evaluating the effects of neuraxial analgesia for laboring women. She presented her research and prepared an article; however, due to the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (Cultural Revolution), which began in 1966, her work went unpublished. She successfully preserved her unpublished article, notes, and slides throughout the Cultural Revolution by hiding them in a countryside location near Beijing. These 54-year-old, previously unpublished documents represent the first known clinical trial of neuraxial labor analgesia conducted in China.

Abstract Birefringent materials, the key components in modulating the polarization of light, are of great importance in optical communication and the laser industry. Limited by their transparency range, few birefringent materials can be practically used in the deep ultraviolet (DUV, λ < 200 nm) region. Different from the traditional BO₃- or B₃O₆-based DUV birefringent crystals, we propose a new functional gene, the B₂O₅ unit, for designing birefringent materials. Excitingly, the synergistic combination of Li₄B₂O₅ and Na₄B₂O₅ generates a new compound, Li₂Na₂B₂O₅, with enhanced optical properties. The Li₂Na₂B₂O₅ crystal with a size of up to 35 × 15 × 5 mm³ was grown by the top-seeded solution growth (TSSG) method, and its physicochemical properties were systematically characterized. Li₂Na₂B₂O₅ features a large amount of birefringence (0.095@532 nm), a short DUV cutoff edge (181 nm) with a high laser-induced damage threshold (LDT, 7.5 GW/cm² @1064 nm, 10 ns), favorable anisotropic thermal expansion (αₐ/αb = 5.6), and the lowest crystal growth temperature (<609 °C) among the commercial birefringent crystals. Moreover, the influences of the B₂O₅ structural configurations on the optical anisotropy were explored. The fascinating experimental results will provide a prominent DUV birefringent crystal and an effective synthesis strategy, which can facilitate the design of DUV birefringent materials.

Abstract This study was aimed to prepare a reconstructed B. Fragilis-derived recombinant α-galactosidase developed for human B to O blood group conversion. Based on the construction of recombinant E. Coli (DE3) which can express α-galactosidase, the inducing time and inducer concentration were optimized for high expression of α-galactosidase. Then, the expression products in supernatant were purified by cation and anion exchange column chromatography. The purified α-galactosidase was used to treat B group red blood cells in phosphate buffer (pH 6.8) for 2 hours to prepare O group red blood cells. The results showed that the optimal inducing conditions for α-galactosidase expression were IPTG 0.1 mmol/L, 37°C and 2 hours. The specific enzyme activity of purified protein increased from 0.42 U/mg to 2.1 U/mg as compared with pre-purification. And, the conditions of B to O blood group conversion were 26°C, pH 6.8 (neutral pH condition) and 2 hours. Moreover, 225 µg of the enzyme could converse 1 ml B red blood cells to O completely. It is concluded that the technology of expression and purification of recombinant α-galactosidase has been established, and the purified protein can converse B red blood cells to O completely, which means that an effective enzyme conversing B red blood cells to O has been obtained.

    Abstract: Ureidomustin hydrochloride (BO-1055) was designed as a water-soluble nitrogen-mustard ...

Abstract Ureidomustin hydrochloride (BO-1055) was designed as a water-soluble nitrogen-mustard, which exhibited potent anticancer activity and was selected as a candidate for preclinical studies. However, up to date, there is rarely an easy and economic method to quantize ureidomustin in the biological samples. The aim of this study is to develop a simple yet valid quantization method to tackle this challenge. Here we present a combined high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array (HPLC-PDA) method in quantizing the ureidomustin in the plasma and various organs of Sprague-Dawley rats. The method was validated in terms of precision, accuracy, and extraction recovery. Furthermore, the established method was applied to study pharmacokinetics of ureidomustin in the rat's plasma and verified via a liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method. Calibration curves of the plasma and organ samples were falling at the range between 0.5-50μg/mL and 0.1-50μg/mL (r(2)≥0.999 and CV≤±15%), respectively. The limits of detection (LOD) were 0.1μg/mL for plasma samples and 0.05μg/mL for organ samples, while the detection limits of quantification (LOQ) were 0.5μg/mL for plasma samples and 0.1μg/mL for organ samples. The average recovery of ureidomustin was about 83%. These results demonstrated a linear pharmacokinetic pattern at dosages of 10 and 30mg/kg. The pharmacokinetic data revealed that ureidomustin was best fitted to a two-compartment model with a rapid distribution phase and a slow elimination phase. Besides, after a short intravenous administration time at the dose of 10mg/kg, ureidomustin was found to be quickly distributed to all organs in rats, accumulated mainly in the kidney, and only a limited amount was detected in the brain.

Abstract To establish a quality control method for the Chinese Patent Medicine (CPM)-Bo Ying Compound (BYC), a comparison study was carried out on it with microscopy. The micro-morphological characteristics of its 22 components in the CPM and in the crude constituents have been documented and compared with each other. Their corresponding features were described and documented with color digital micrographs, so as to authenticate the presence of genuine crude constituents in BYC. The results showed that almost all constituents of BYC are found within their representative fragments in the CPM except one (Borax) that could dissolve or merge with the other components. Also the study indicated that light microscopy, an easy and economical method, could be used for the identification of this kind of CPM that contains plant and animal materials without the specific characteristic chemical marker compounds.

Abstract BaTiO₃ ceramics doped with 3wt% K₀.₅Na₀.₅NbO₃ content and different Li₂O–Bi₂O₃–B₂O₃ frit as the sintering aids were prepared by the conventional solid state ceramic route. The effects of the Li₂O–Bi₂O₃–B₂O₃ frit on the phase composition, microstructure and dielectric properties of BaTiO₃ ceramics were investigated. Results show that the BaTiO₃ pellet has pure tetragonal crystal structure. And the dielectric ceramic with high permittivity of 5585 and excellent densification were obtained at a sintering temperature of 980°C, meeting X8R specifications. The results also suggest that the developed BaTiO₃ based X8R ceramics may serve as a promising candidate for fabricating cheap multilayer capacitors with base metal as inner electrode.

Abstract A novel Bi-doped P₂O₅–B₂O₃–Al₂O₃ glass was investigated, and strong broadband NIR (near infrared) luminescence was observed when the sample was excited by 445nm, 532nm, 808nm and 980nm lasers, respectively. The max FWHM with 312nm, the lifetime with 580μs and the σₑₘτ product with 5.3×10⁻²⁴cm²s were obtained which indicates that this glass is a promising material for broadband optical amplifier and tunable laser. The effect of the introduction of B₂O₃ on the glass structure and Bi-ions illuminant mechanism were discussed and analyzed. It is suggested that the introduction of B₂O₃ makes the glass structure closer, and the broadband NIR emission derives from Bi⁰:²D₃/₂→⁴S₃/₂ and Bi⁺:³P₁→³P₀ transitions.
