    Abstract Faith-based organizations (FBOs) can play an important role in improving health outcomes. Lay community health advisors (CHAs) are integral to these efforts. This paper assesses the sustainability of a CHA training program for congregants in African-American and Latino FBOs and subsequent implementation of educational workshops. The program is unique in that a health care chaplain in an academic medical center was central to the program's development and implementation. Forty-eight CHAs in 11 FBOs were trained to teach workshops on cardiovascular health, mental health, diabetes, and smoking cessation. Two thousand four hundred and forty-four participants attended 70 workshops. This program has the potential to be a model to educate individuals and to address health inequities in underserved communities. Health care chaplains in other medical centers may use this as a model for enhancing community engagement and education.

    Abstract We report the first solid-state impedance study of hydrogen-rich ammonia borane, AB, and its three alkali metal amidoborane derivatives. Temperature-dependent impedance spectra of solid M(NH(2)BH(3)) salts are predominated by ionic conductivity, which at room temperature ranges from 5.5 μS cm(-1) (M = Li) to 2.2-3.0 mS cm(-1) (Na, Na(0.5)Li(0.5)), while the activation energy for conductivity is rather high (140-158 kJ mol(-1)). Variation of conductivity with time can be used to extract information about the evolution of the system during thermal decomposition. By using a combination of impedance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning calorimetry, evolved gas analysis, infrared absorption spectroscopy as well as (11)B and (1)H MAS NMR, we were able to reconfirm the complex pathway of thermal decomposition of amidoboranes postulated by two of us earlier (J. Mater. Chem. 2009, 19, 2043).

    Abstract The beginnings of the petrol chainsaw in forestry date back to the early 20th century. For more than a century, engineers have been refining the chainsaw to make it as efficient and comfortable as possible for woodcutters. In recent years, environmental protection and the reduction in CO 2 emissions policies have been particularly prominent. As a consequence, the use of battery-powered electric tools, including chainsaws, has become increasingly widespread, especially in gardening. However, electric chainsaws have limited battery capacity and, therefore, are not used daily in forestry. This study aimed to determine the efficiency of a battery-powered chainsaw during commercial thinning. The research compared the work efficiency of the petrol chainsaw Dolmar PS 5000 and the battery-powered Echo ECCS-58V during commercial thinning in a 14-year-old pine stand. In seven repeats, the following variables were measured each time: working time, working area and noise load to which the logger was exposed. Obtained results were used to calculate average productivity, a weighted equivalent continuous sound pressure level (L Aeq ) and a weighted noise exposure level normalized to a nominal 8h working day (L EX,8h ). The average operating length of the battery-powered chainsaw was 00:41:26 and was comparable to the working length of a petrol chainsaw, for which the average working time was 00:41:41. The average work output of the petrol chainsaw was 100 m 2 /h higher. The recorded noise exposure, L Aeq and L EX,8h , were lower for the battery-powered chainsaw. Using a battery-powered chainsaw was less workload, because of smaller noise levels and zero emissions. This study found that six fully charged batteries allowed the user to effectively complete a work shift. It can be concluded that battery-powered chainsaws can be used effectively during commercial thinning. Further tests should be run in winter to determine the effect of low temperatures on battery consumption.

    Abstract Introduction: This study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of treatment using simple prostatectomy (SP) and using photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) with a 180W GreenLight XPS laser in patients with high-volume prostate hypertrophy.
    Material and methods: The study included 120 patients with LUTS symptoms caused by prostatic enlargement of more than 80 ml; 79 patients were treated with SP, while 41 were treated with PVP. The analysis included subjective the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and Quality of Life (QoL), and objective (Qmax), (Qave), and post-void residual volume (PVR) parameters before treatment and at an average of 38 months after surgical treatment. Early and late adverse effects and length of hospitalisation were assessed. Complication reports were performed according to the modified Clavien-Dindo system.
    Results: The analysis independently showed the effectiveness of both methods. Subjective parameters (IPSS, QoL), showed no significant differences. Patients treated with SP scored slightly better on objective parameters (Qmax, Qave, and PVR). Analysis of adverse effects and hospitalisation time were more favourable after PVP.
    Conclusions: SP and PVP were found to be comparable and highly effective in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia in terms of IPSS and QoL. Patients treated with the SP method obtained slightly better results of objective parameters such as Qmax, Qave, and PVR. Compared with SP, PVP has a more favourable safety profile.

    Abstract Background: Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) are applied to enhance magnetic resonance imaging. Gadolinium (Gd), a rare earth metal, is used in a chelated form when administered as GBCA to patients. There is an ongoing scientific debate about the clinical significance of Gd retention in tissues after administration of GBCAs. It is known that bone serves as Gd reservoir, but only sparse information on localization of Gd in bone is available.
    Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare Gd tissue concentration and spatial distribution in femoral epiphysis and diaphysis 10 weeks after single-dose injection of linear and macrocyclic GBCAs in a large animal model.
    Materials and methods: In this prospective animal study, Swiss-Alpine sheep (n = 36; age range, 4-10 years) received a single injection (0.1 mmol/kg) of macrocyclic (gadobutrol, gadoteridol, and gadoterate meglumine), linear (gadodiamide and gadobenate dimeglumine) GBCAs, or saline. Ten weeks after injection, sheep were killed, and femur heads and shafts were harvested. Gadolinium spatial distribution was determined in 1 sample of each treatment group by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. All bone specimens were analyzed histopathologically.
    Results: Injection of GBCAs in female Swiss-Alpine sheep (n = 36) resulted in Gd localization at the endosteal and periosteal surface and in a subset of GBCAs additionally at the cement lines and the bone cartilage junction. No histopathological alterations were observed in the investigated tissue specimens.
    Conclusions: Ten weeks after single injection of a clinically relevant dose in adult sheep, both linear species of GBCA resulted in considerably higher accumulation than macrocyclic GBCAs. Gadolinium deposits were restricted to distinct bone and cartilage compartments, such as in bone linings, cement lines, and bone cartilage junctions. Tissue histology remained unaffected.

    Abstract The effectiveness of protective coatings based on 3-(2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoropentyloxy)propyltriethoxysilane (OFTES) in protecting concrete surfaces against water was tested. For the synthesis of OFTES, 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoropentanol, which is a by-product in the synthesis of poly(tetrafluoroethylene), was used. The proposed silane is a cheaper alternative to the fluorinated organosilicon compounds currently used. The coatings were deposited by the sol-gel method. As a result of the creation of chemical bonds between the concrete surface and the silane, a coating was created that permanently increases the hydrophobicity of the concrete. Fluorine chains attached to silicon atoms are an effective barrier that prevents access to water and limits its impact on the concrete surface. As a result of the proposed silanization, the concrete surface obtained a hydrophobic character at contact angles of up to 126°, and the water absorption of the concrete decreased by up to 96%.

    Abstract BACKGROUND: Naked mole-rats (NMRs) are eusocially organized in colonies. Although breeders carry the additional metabolic load of reproduction, they are extremely long-lived and remain fertile throughout their lifespan. This phenomenon contrasts the disposable soma theory of aging stating that organisms can invest their resources either in somatic maintenance, enabling a longer lifespan, or in reproduction, at the cost of longevity. Here, we present a comparative transcriptome analysis of breeders vs. non-breeders of the eusocial, long-lived NMR vs. the polygynous and shorter-lived guinea pig (GP). RESULTS: Comparative transcriptome analysis of tissue samples from ten organs showed, in contrast to GPs, low levels of differentiation between sexes in adult NMR non-breeders. After transition into breeders, NMR transcriptomes are markedly sex-specific, show pronounced feedback signaling via gonadal steroids, and have similarities to reproductive phenotypes in African cichlid fish, which also exhibit social status changes between dominant and subordinate phenotypes. Further, NMRs show functional enrichment of status-related expression differences associated with aging. Lipid metabolism and oxidative phosphorylation—molecular networks known to be linked to aging—were identified among most affected gene sets. Remarkably and in contrast to GPs, transcriptome patterns associated with longevity are reinforced in NMR breeders. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide comprehensive and unbiased molecular insights into interspecies differences between NMRs and GPs, both in sexual maturation and in the impact of reproduction on longevity. We present molecular evidence that sexual maturation in NMRs is socially suppressed. In agreement with evolutionary theories of aging in eusocial organisms, we have identified transcriptome patterns in NMR breeders that—in contrast to the disposable soma theory of aging—may slow down aging rates and potentially contribute to their exceptional long life- and healthspan.

    Abstract Background: In-brace correction and brace compliance with thoraco-lumbo-sacral orthotic (TLSO) braces are associated with successful treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). This paper compares patients who had consistent radiographic documentation of in-brace correction to those who did not.
    Methods: All skeletally immature (Risser 0-2) patients were treated for AIS (25-45°) with full-time TLSO braces that had compliance temperature monitors. All patients wore their braces at least 12 h a day. Brace failure was defined as curve progression to a surgical magnitude (≥ 50°). All patients were followed until brace discontinuation.
    Results: Ninety patients (F 82, M 8) with an average age of 12.1 (10.1-15.0) years, Risser grade 0 (0-2), BMI percentile 48.5 (0.0-98.8), and daily brace wear of 16.5 (12.1-21.6) h/day were treated for 24.3 (8.0-66.6) months. Patients went through 1.7 (1-4) braces on average. Forty-two out of 90 (46.7%) patients had some amount of brace time with an unknown in-brace correction, which, on average, was 66.1% of their total treatment course (11.5-100). On univariate analysis, patients that did not have a repeat in-brace x-ray with major brace adjustments or new brace fabrication tended to be more skeletally immature (Risser 0 and tri-radiate open, p = 0.028), wear more braces throughout their treatment (2.0 vs 1.4, p < 0.001), were treated for a longer period of time (27 vs 22 months, p = 0.022), and failed bracing more often (47.6% vs 22.9%, p = 0.014).
    Conclusions: Patients who did not have new in-brace x-rays with major brace adjustments and/or new brace fabrication were 3.1 (95% CI 1.2-7.6) times more likely to fail bracing than patients who were re-checked with new in-brace x-rays.

    Abstract Venous thrombosis is a common adverse effect of modern therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Prior studies to identify risks of thrombosis in pediatric ALL have been limited by genetic screens of pre-identified genetic variants or genome- wide association studies (GWAS) in ancestrally uniform populations. To address this, we performed a retrospective cohort evaluation of thrombosis risk in 1,005 children treated for newly diagnosed ALL. Genetic risk factors were comprehensively evaluated from genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays and were evaluated using Cox regression adjusting for identified clinical risk factors and genetic ancestry. The cumulative incidence of thrombosis was 7.8%. In multivariate analysis, older age, T-lineage ALL, and non-O blood group were associated with increased thrombosis while non-low-risk treatment and higher presenting white blood cell count trended toward increased thrombosis. No SNP reached genome-wide significance. The SNP most strongly associated with thrombosis was rs2874964 near RFXAP (G risk allele; P=4x10-7; hazard ratio [HR] =2.8). In patients of non-European ancestry, rs55689276 near the α globin cluster (P=1.28x10-6; HR=27) was most strongly associated with thrombosis. Among GWAS catalogue SNP reported to be associated with thrombosis, rs2519093 (T risk allele, P=4.8x10-4; HR=2.1), an intronic variant in ABO, was most strongly associated with risk in this cohort. Classic thrombophilia risks were not associated with thrombosis. Our study confirms known clinical risk features associated with thrombosis risk in children with ALL. In this ancestrally diverse cohort, genetic risks linked to thrombosis risk aggregated in erythrocyte-related SNP, suggesting the critical role of this tissue in thrombosis risk.
